His early fieldwork in African villages in the 1950s was typical of the career development of field anthropologists at that time. He developed a special interest in rituals, seeing these as social drama in addition to the religious expression of the sacred. He drew on the work of Arnold van Gennep (1960, originally 1908) on rites of passage (viz. birth, marriage, death and sometimes puberty initiation), translated into English in 1960: Turner focused on the concept of limen, ‘threshold’ and the term liminality. Van Gennep added pre-liminal separation or isolation from, and post-liminal reincorporation into, one’s community as a threefold schema. The context was tribal and religious, with gods and spirits demanding to be appeased. Turner applied this retrospectively to his own fieldwork, and far beyond van Gennep’s work, developed the concept to embrace all transitions and all rituals everywhere. He bracketed out academic scepticism about tribal religion and focused on how the people experienced the ritual. Ritual as social drama gives it a significant social function, to dispel conflict and schism and to mend quarrels. He then applied this concept to western developed society to explore how conflict is resolved and what replaces ritual in a secular context.

    LIMINAL TO LIMINOID, IN PLAY, FLOW, AND RITUAL: AN ESSAY IN COMPARATIVE SYMBOLOGY by Victor Turner First I will describe what 1 mean by "comparative symbology" and how, in a broad way, it differs from such disciplines as "semiotics" (or "semiology") and "symbolic anthropology," which are also concerned with the study of such terms as symbols, signs, signals, significations, icons, signifiers, signi- fied~,sign-vehicles, and so on. Here, I want to discuss some of the types of sociocultural processes and settings in which new symbols, verbal and non- verbal, tend to be generated. This will lead me into a comparison of "liminal" and "liminoid" phenomena, terms which 1 will consider shortly. According to Josiah Webster's lexicographical progeny, the people who produced the second College edition of Webster's New World Dictionary, "symbology" is "the study or interpretation of symbols"; it is also "repre- sentation or expression by means of symbols." The term "comparative" merely means that this branch of study involves comparison as a method, as does, for example, comparative linguistics. Comparative symbology is narrower than "semiotics" or "semiology" (to use Saussure's and Roland Barthes's terms), and wider than "symbolic anthropology" in range and scope of data and problems. (Mbembe 2006, 4) 1 A Past Future: The Birth of New Cultural History and the Boom of Anthropological Theories In the year 1989, Lynn Hunt proclaimed nothing less than the beginning of a new cultural history (Hunt 1989, 10) and pleaded for consequential anthropological theoretical receptions. Already eight years prior, Natalie Zemon Davis wrote, “anthropology can widen the possibilities, can help us take off our blinders, and give us a new place from which to view the past and discover the strange and sur- prising in the familiar landscape of historical texts” (Davis 1981, 275). In Germany in 1984, Hans Medick published his legendary – and subsequently updated – article Missionaries in the Rowboat? stating that anthropological knowledge and theories could help enlighten the “complex mutual interdependence between circumstances of life and the concrete practice” of historical actors – their “expe- riences and modes of behavior” (Medick 1995, 43). All three authors, and many other cultural historians, argued against socio-historical approaches that they considered deficient, particularly due to their theoretical framework. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, new cultural history, as well as historical anthropology (a specific German version of cultural historical approaches), were coined by the constant pleas for an injection of anthropological theories and methods into historical theoretical and method- ological approaches.

The term menstrual performance refers to various ways in which menstrual blood is used as an aesthetic and political expression. These uses are often related to artistic settings, but they also occur in more mundane contexts such as social networks in the Internet.     DECENTERING ETHNOGRAPHY: VICTOR TURNER'S VISION OF ANTHROPOLOGY BY BENNETTA JULES-ROSETTE (University of California, San Diego) Introduction During the past decade, the works of Victor Turner have been reread and reinterpreted in many ways. His contributions to the analysis of social process, ritual symbols, play, and performance stand as landmarks in the fields of anthropology and humanistic studies. The unfolding of Turner's theories involves a complex, nonlinear interweaving of multiple voices and influences from, in Edith Turner's words, the 'Ndembu of Zambia to Broadway' .' This essay examines Turner's contribution to decentering ethnography and repositioning the postcolonial subject. Although Turner would not have used these terms to describe the impact of his auvre, a rereading of Turner's early ethnographies and later essays places his work squarely within contemporary debates about postcolonial society and postmodern culture. Ethnography as a method of documentation in the social sciences was classically based upon the assumption that researchers could provide authentic and reliable accounts of the lives of their subjects. The researcher, thus, operated as an omniscient ego. Anthropological studies of preliterate societies positioned the ethnographer as the scribe and interpreter of arcane oral traditions. Concepts such as structure, function, and conflict, emerging from this type oaf anthropology, clearly separate the researcher from the other, whose social world is described as an insulated microcosm (Mudimbe, 1988:82). The colonial subject, who became the target of this anthropological discourse, played an intriguing role of passive assent and active collaboration in the production of exotic cultural narratives. With the waning of the colonial period, the authority of the ethnographer's voice was challenged.
