Abstract: Language should be used to learn is one of the research scope of pragmatics, in terms with science, the pragmatic comparative study between different language is a kind of commonly used research techniques. Context is one of the core concepts of pragmatics. Interpersonal communication depends on specific context, context directly affects the people to the use of words and reason. The appropriateness of some specific speech ACTS must be judged according to the context in which they are used. People have social attributes, and their lives are restricted and regulated by the society. People in social activities, often will encounter many sensitive issues, or embarrassing situation of difficult, this is taboo. It is like a free form the yoke of bondage in people's language and behavior. In the process of language communication, taboo people say or write some words or words, is a taboo language; Words that are forbidden or taboo to say or write are taboo words. Taboos are a reflection of human society and culture. As an inseparable part of language, taboos can be studied by pragmatics, that is, by comparing the taboos between different languages and understanding and expressing them in specific contexts. -

I (May 2017) PP 41-46 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org A Note on the Incest Taboo: The Case of the Matrilineal Khasis Davina Diengdoh Ropmay (Research Scholar, Department of Sociology, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya, India) Abstract : Incest Taboo serves as one important aspect under kinship studies. Understanding the rules prohibiting intimate and sexual relations with certain kin throws light on how other facets of a social organisation operate such as marriage, clan organisation and kinship terminology. The existence of the Incest Taboo among the Khasi, a major matrilineal tribal group of Meghalaya, provides us a picture on how such facets are determined. Therefore, this article attempts to describe the bounds of the incest taboo among the Khasis and the serious implication it has towards the maintenance and perpetuation of the society as a whole Keywords: Incest, Exogamy, Incest Taboo, Marriage, Khasi. I. INTRODUCTION The study of Kinship has been a much researched area in sociological and social anthropological studies. It simply seeks to understand on one hand, in what way a person is related to another, and on the other hand, in what way do these people exhibit behaviour with each other as per their relationship. Radcliffe-Brown rightly puts it “A kinship system thus presents to us a complex set of norms, of usages, of patterns of behaviour between kindred” (Radcliffe-Brown 1950: 10). Behaviour patterns which stem out of the social relations between people, customs, norms and usages are important for the functioning of the social machinery. -

They are defined as rituals, or ceremonies, that surround milestone events in a person’s life such as birth, maturity, reproduction and death. Other rites of passage can celebrate transitions that are wholly cultural, marking changes in social position, occupation or affiliation. Whether they take place in a secular or religious context, such rites perform a similar function. They symbolically mark--often actually enable--an individual’s passage from one phase of life, or social status, to another. Rites of passage can be considered universal in human experience, in that all societies find ways to mark transition between one phase of life to another. The Muslim rites and customs explored in this activity may be different from a person’s own experience but nonetheless participants may be able to identify points of commonality between their own social, culture or religious identity and the rites explored in this activity. This activity is designed to help participants identify and explore the range of rituals and practices that may be part of a Muslim person’s, or families’, experience of life cycle events and rituals It is also worth pointing out that some of the rituals described may be considered as a duty within Islam. Learning Outcomes To gain knowledge of some of the rites and rituals that are part of a Muslim persons life cycle. To gain an understanding of ritual as a way to mark the passage from one stage of a persons life to another. -

Victor Turner and Contemporary Cultural Performance, Graham St. John, (ed) 2008 New York and Oxford: Berghahn Books. £47.50 hbk ix + 358 pages ISBN 978-1-84545-462-3 Victor Witter Turner (1920 – 1983), working with his wife Edith Turner, was an anthropologist deeply concerned with ritual both in tribal communities and in the contemporary developed world. His early fieldwork in African villages in the 1950s was typical of the career development of field anthropologists at that time. He developed a special interest in rituals, seeing these as social drama in addition to the religious expression of the sacred. He drew on the work of Arnold van Gennep (1960, originally 1908) on rites of passage (viz. birth, marriage, death and sometimes puberty initiation), translated into English in 1960: Turner focused on the concept of limen, ‘threshold’ and the term liminality. Van Gennep added pre-liminal separation or isolation from, and post-liminal reincorporation into, one’s community as a threefold schema. The context was tribal and religious, with gods and spirits demanding to be appeased. Turner applied this retrospectively to his own fieldwork, and far beyond van Gennep’s work, developed the concept to embrace all transitions and all rituals everywhere. He bracketed out academic scepticism about tribal religion and focused on how the people experienced the ritual. Ritual as social drama gives it a significant social function, to dispel conflict and schism and to mend quarrels. He then applied this concept to western developed society to explore how conflict is resolved and what replaces ritual in a secular context. -

They do, yet my experience was (and is) that in America they are the exception rather than the rule. Youth do not develop in a vacuum, they develop in unhealthy villages and communities that we as adults are responsible for allowing to exist (Some, 1993). THE BEGINNING • A personal desire to emulate the order, ritual and ceremony of traditional African Rites of Passage and in the process empower a generation • A passion to develop a program to confront the feelings of hopelessness, self-hatred, cultural confusion and moral uncertainty that plagued African-American youth in Philadelphia • Initial focus on African –American males WHAT IS A RITE OF PASSAGE? • A rite of passage is a social ritual which marks a change-transition-transformation in consciousness, character and community. During the process, a door of new awareness opens and expanded possibilities and horizons are envisioned. • It is (traditionally) an organized system designed to indicate mastery of a particular level of life. • In our culture, rites of passage fills the gap between formal education and home training. B.U.I.L.D. EXPLAINED • Birth of Unique Individuals Lessens Delinquency (B.U.I.L.D.) is a contemporary rites of passage/mentoring project. It consists of a comprehensive three-phase prevention/intervention program that utilizes a wellness foundation, designed to develop consciousness, confidence, competence, commitment and character as well as to instill a sense of self, history and community. -

The author seeks to show how a bridge can be established between these two concepts, which may at first appear distant, by focusing on certain under-discussed aspects of rites of passage. He argues that the ‘liminal’ phase of rites of passage is tied to the ambiguity brought about through the isolation and individualization of the initiate. -

The guiding A method for these new academic areas was positivism, the belief that cov- ering laws of human organization could be discovered through direct observation. This perspective maintains that the universe is orderly, and the job of scientific inquiry is to discover this order and classify it in systematic ways. Charles Darwin’s work on evolution was an important model for researchers in the social sciences who searched for origins in the “evolution” of culture. Theories of the evolution of culture are interwoven with the study of religion. Three schools of theory emerged in the nineteenth century—myth and ritual, soci- ological, and psychological—all asking the question, Did religion originate in myth or ritual? Mircea Eliade was interested in the phenomenology of religious experi- ence and how myths and rituals are expressions of both the sacred and the profane in culture that provide unity for people. The sociological school, led by Emile Durkheim, maintained that religion is a social creation whose function is to pre- serve the welfare of a society. Sigmund Freud anchored the psychological approach: taboos of incest and patricide necessitate rituals that appease repressed desires. Across these approaches, performance was studied for its window into larger cultural structures, like religion, politics, economics, language, and identity (Beeman 1993). When specific performance genres were studied (like rites, rituals, games, contests, dance, and music), performance was often seen as a fixed, static product, evidence of cross-cultural similarities, and indicative of universal needs and expressions. -
