KDP and Nineveh Plain
The Kurds and the Future of Nineveh Plain (Little Assyria) Fred Aprim December 7, 2006 It puzzles me how some of our people continue to misunderstand and misinterpret the simplest of behaviors or actions on the parts of Barazani's Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and those few Assyrian individuals who speak on behalf of the Assyrian nation unlawfully. Two simple questions: 1. If Mas'aud Barazani and KDP really mean well towards Assyrians, why marginalize the biggest Assyrian political group by far, i.e., the Assyrian Democratic Movement (ADM) and exclude it from participating in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet since the ADM has been in that government since 1992 and won the only elections in northern Iraq that took place in that year. If the KDP means well, why use its influence in order to control the sole Iraqi Central Government seat that is assigned for ChaldoAssyrian Christians by having Fawzi Hariri, a KPD associate, as a minister in it. Why not act democratically and yield to the ADM that won in two national elections of January and December 2005 to fill that position? Why is it so hard to understand that Barazani is doing all this to control the Assyrians' future and cause? 2. Do the five Christian political groups, supported by KDP and its strong man Sargis Aghajan, that call for joining the Nineveh plains to the KRG, namely, a) Assyrian Patriotic Party (APP), b) ChaldoAshur Org. of Kurdistani Communist Party, c) Chaldean Democratic Forum (CDF), d) Chaldean Cultural Association (CCA), and e) Bet Nahrain Democratic Party (BNDP) really think that they will secure the Assyrian rights by simply allowing Barazani to usurp the Nineveh plain without serious guarantees recognized by the Iraqi government and international institutions. -
Seventh Pastoral Letter of Catholic
SEVENTH Pastoral Letter PASTORAL LETTER TO PRIESTS “As the Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” (John 20:21) Feast of the Dormition, 15 August 2004 INTRODUCTION To our beloved sons and brothers, the priests, “Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.” (1 Timothy 1: 2) We greet you with the salutation of the Apostle Paul to his disciple, Timothy, feeling with him that we always have need of the “mercy and peace of God,” just as we always have need of renewal in the understanding of our faith and priesthood, which binds us in a peculiar way to “God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.” We renew our faith, so as to become ever more ready to accept our priesthood, and assume our mission in our society. The Rabweh Meeting We held our twelfth annual meeting at Rabweh (Lebanon), from 27 to 31 October 2002, welcomed by our brother H.B. Gregorios III, Patriarch of Antioch, of Alexandria and of Jerusalem for the Melkite Greek Catholics. We studied together the nature of the priesthood, its holiness and everything to do with our priests, confided to our care and dear to our heart. Following on from that meeting, we address this letter to you, dear priests, to express to all celibate and married clergy, our esteem and gratitude for your efforts to make the Word and Love of God present in our Churches and societies. Object of the letter “We thank God at every moment for you,” dear priests, who are working in the vineyard of the Lord in all our eparchies in the Middle East, in the countries of the Gulf and in the distant countries of emigration. -

The Most Reverend Eusebius Beltran, Archbishop of Oklahoma City, and the Rt. Reverend Lawrence Stasyszen, O.S.B., Abbot of St. Gregory’s Abbey, announced the shift in parish administration at a meeting with parish representatives held at Saint Benedict Parish in Shawnee on March 15. Archbishop Beltran hosted the meeting in order to share information with parish repre- sentatives and to answer questions regarding the immediate effects of the change. During the meeting, Archbishop Beltran noted that “the Catholic Church is structured along geographical lines so that every Catholic person and institution is under the jurisdiction of the local bishop. This area is called a diocese or archdiocese. Through the spiritual direction of the bishop or archbishop and extended through smaller areas (parishes), the faith is transmitted, celebrated and grows. Therefore, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City will be responsible for appointing pastors to the area formerly served by the Benedictine Monks of Shawnee.” Congregations at Saint Cecilia Church in Maud, Saint Vincent de Paul Church in McLoud, Immaculate Conception Church in Seminole, Saint Benedict Church in Shawnee, Saint Joseph Church in Wewoka and Saint Mary Church in Wanette will be affected by the change in administration. -

THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH Department for External Church Relations DECR chairman expresses condolences to the Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Babylon over demise of his predecessor Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, sent the following condolences to His Beatitude Mar Louis Raphaël I Sako over the demise of his predecessor, His Beatitude Patriarch Emeritus Emmanuel III Cardinal Delly: Your Beatitude: Please accept my sincere condolences over the demise of your predecessor, Mar Emmanuel III Delly, Patriarch Emeritus of Babylon. The Lord has judged His Beatitude to lead the Chaldean Catholic Church at the exceptionally hard time for Iraq. In the years of his office, His Beatitude Patriarch Emmanuel witnessed military intervention which inflicted destruction and was followed by the murderous war and massive exodus of Christians from the Middle East – the land of their predecessors with ancient history that has been preserving Biblical spirit. His Beatitude remained firm in his faith in God’s Providence, kept up love of the people and his kind, truly Christian attitude to any human person irrespective of his political views, cultural traditions, national or religious background. He gained confidence and profound respect of many contemporaries. May the Lord grant him eternal memory! The Relations of the Catholic Church with Georgian Christianity in Modern History
Journal of Eastern Christian Studies 67(3-4), 347-373. doi: 10.2143/JECS.67.3.3149539 © 2015 by Journal of Eastern Christian Studies. All rights reserved. THE RELATIONS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH WITH GEORGIAN CHRISTIANITY IN MODERN HISTORY JOHN FLANNERY THE ORIGINS OF CHRISTIANITY IN GEORGIA The historical origins of Christianity in Georgia are ancient. Tradition has St. Andrew and St. Matthias the Canaanite both preaching the Gospel in Western Georgia, while other sources posit the presence in Eastern Georgia of Bartholomew and Thaddeus, also claimed as the evangelisers of neigh- bouring Armenia. The prevalence of Christianity in eastern Georgia is dif- ficult to quantify before the fourth century, with the conversion of Mirian III (r. 284-361) and his family, following which Christianity came under state protection. His conversion by Saint Nino is generally dated to around 337,1 and the event is recorded in the Latin text of Rufinus’ Ecclesiastical History (c. 402), while the oldest existing record in Georgian dates from the 7th c. Conversion of Kartli, and a much more elaborate version appears in the 9th or 10th c. Life of Nino. The conversion of the west Georgian kingdom was more gradual, with Christianity being officially embraced in 523.2 Early Christianity in the cosmopolitan pre-modern Caucasus, situated at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, was characterised by tremendous diversity, inclusiveness and a degree of syncretism. Under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Apostolic See of Antioch from the second decade of the 1 The conversion of the West Georgian kingdom was more gradual, with Christianity being officially embraced in 523. -
Kurds Undermining Assyrian National Interests in Iraq
Kurds Undermining Assyrian National Interests in Iraq By Fred Aprim Since 2003, the Kurdish leadership has carefully been executing an orchestrated plan to undermine the national rights of the Assyrian people (as an ethnic group and as indigenous people) in Iraq in general and in northern Iraq in particular. The leadership of Barazani and Talabani has undermined and marginalized the true voice of the Assyrian people (also known as Chaldeans and Syriacs) represented in the Assyrian Democratic Movement (ADM) and its legally and constitutionally elected representatives. The Kurdish-ADM relationship has been strained since the ADM's 2003 Baghdad Conference, which came after the fall of Saddam Hussein regime and with the United States promises of freedom to all Iraqi people. Since 1992, the ADM has worked as a partner with the Kurdish leadership of Barazani and Talabani as both sides (Assyrians and Kurds) were struggling against the common oppressive Pan-Arabist regime of Saddam Hussein. However, after the fall of Saddam's regime in 2003, the policy of the Kurdish leadership changed as real changes began to take place in Iraq. The Kurdish leadership did not want to see the Assyrians as an independent entity and force in northern Iraq so as not to compete with the Kurds over the West's attention. The Kurdish leadership did not favor the recommendations and plans of the ADM that were proclaimed in the 2003 Baghdad Conference. First, Barazani and his Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) made sure to divide the one Assyrian people into two or three ethnic factions: Assyrians, Chaldeans and Syriac. -
