I know I say it every year, but the footy seasons are definitely getting quicker and 2011 was no different. We registered 299 players at the beginning of the season and finished with 288 players after drop-outs, de registrations etc. These made up 20 teams and for the first time ever we fielded three U7 teams. This caused quite a few headaches around grading time especially trying to get the div 2 and 3 players sorted as it is so important to get these guys playing at their right level. We probably didn’t get it 100% right but we’ve learned for the future.

Unfortunately our ‘on field’ performances were not on par with previous seasons and we finished well down the ladder on all club championships. This must have caused some ‘frustration’ with 6 players being sent off during the season and 2 Code of Conduct violations from our supporters. Code of conduct violations from our Club should not be happening and they are simply unacceptable! However that aside, 5 sides did manage to make the semis - the 10-3s, 13-1s, 14s, 19-1s and A grade. Well done. The 13s and 14s departed the first week; the 10-3s made it to the final while the U19s and A Grade made the grand final with the U19s eventually being crowned PREMIERS!!

I had labeled the 19s as ‘one to watch’ in the last few yearbooks because they had stuck together through the good times (U6 to U11s) and the bad times (U12s to U16s) building their skill levels and waiting for their bodies to catch up to the opposition’s. They made the grand final last year and should have won, but lack of big game experience went against them. This year was a different matter - we played like we were born in the big time and the grand final was effectively over at half time, such was our dominance – and how good was that!!!! None of the boys had previously won a premiership and when reports came in on Mad Monday from as far away as Orient Road Padstow and Alfords Point of hearing ‘Oh when the Saints coming marching in’ bellowing from the Clubhouse around 10.30pm on grand final night, you can understand the jubilation of this team and their supporters.

The A Grade were up against who simply should not have been in the comp. I hate making excuses, but they were a Bundy Cup standard side so we did well to even compete with them. It was a shame because 14 of the guys were retiring and had put a lot into the season to go out as winners. Unfortunately there was no fairy tale ending but these boys have dominated the A Grade since 2004 so there was no shame in finishing their careers against such a side. Special mention must go to Justin Hall and Mick Hanratty who completed 20 years service with the Club – what a fantastic effort and achievement. Well done.

20 teams took a lot of looking after and we registered 20 coaches, 24 managers and 36 trainers. The pleasing aspect about these 80 volunteers was 34 (8 coaches, 8 managers and 18 trainers) were taking on these roles for the first time. We need this fresh blood to keep the Club healthy and prospering and I thank you. With so much new blood, we did ‘drop the ball’ in helping these guys with their teams and this did reflect in the results. We have addressed this and have already held a coach’s meeting to discuss help and assistance for next season.

Socially the highlight of the year was the 4th Annual St Christopher’s Ball. Our long weekend kid’s disco was a success as was the golf day. We also enjoyed a couple of really big nights at the Diggers. These, added to a few quiet ones on a Saturday arvo at the Diggers or Revesby Pub, meant we never went short of something to do!

Now for the thank yous:-  Our generous sponsors;  The canteen manager Jane Grealy and the parents and grandparents who helped on game day. Special mention to Toni Cook, Karen Samuel and Raelene Davidson who put in extra help on Sundays;  Dave Harrington for the newsletter and photos;

4  Nadine Standaloft for looking after the website;  Jane Grealy for updating our stats and entering the scores each weekend;  Ken Hanratty for updating the Clubhouse photo and honour boards;  Simmo and Slats for organising the Golf Day and Anne Simpson for the Ball;  Mette Kitiona and Raelene Davidson for the Kid’s Disco;  Aidan and Rhys Harrington for their help setting up on game day;  Peter Finch for lots of general duties (BBQ and Bar to name a couple) and remember it’s not clean unless it’s Finchie Clean!  Craig Jordan, Tim Bailey, Simon Standaloft for lots of repairs and improvements around the ground including the scoreboard and Frank Karnold who gave us a day’s painting!  Our network of Ground first aiders; and  Raelene Davidson, Kirsten Wilson, Craig Jordan, Karen Rehayem and Peter Finch for organizing the Junior Presentation.

All your work never goes un-noticed and we can’t function without it. Thank you.

Congratulations to Jane Grealy for being the Western Academy’s Volunteer of the Month for July. I nominated Jane for the great work she does in the canteen and entering our player stats and scores. With this recognition I may now be able to get her to go around again!!

Finally, thanks to the Committee of Craig Jordan, Jon D’Astoli, Ken Slattery, Dave Harrington, Tim Bailey and Simon Standaloft for your help and support during the year. Hopefully, everyone (Committee, coaches, parents, players) will be back next year.

5 SECRETARY’S REPORT

The 2011 season came and went so quick it is hard to recall what actually happened.

The year started with a great response at our two registration days seeing many new players signing up. With so many mini players joining we were able to field three under 6 and under 7 sides. In total we fielded 20 teams for a total of 290 players.

2011 did see us get the “Daystar” scoreboard up and running to perfection after some very annoying teething problems. Thanks to Dave Harrington and Tim Bailey for their persistence with the manufacturers “convincing” them to come and modify the wireless system. I can assure you our “Daystar” score board is now the envy of all clubs.

I would like to thank all of our Coaches, Managers and Trainers for volunteering their time to “run” our 20 teams for what is usually a thankless job. Whilst this year was not a great year for on field results, I know all of our teams were well looked after.

Thanks to the presentation committee Raelene, Kirsten, Karen, and Peter who have worked for the past three years to develop an event that truly gives back to our players and families. It is a great day to look forward to each year.

Thanks to Anne Simpson for organising the ball and Simmo and Slatts for the golf Day. Both were enjoyable events as always.

Special thanks to Madison Jordan and Brittany Standaloft who ‘manned’ our supporter’s gear stall on many a cold Saturday morning.

Congratulations to Dave and Aidan Harrington as well as Dylan Elias for becoming referees during the season. From all reports these three club members were well received by their peers and CBDJRL clubs as text book examples of what is required by referees in today’s game.

Congratulations to Jack Martin for being named CBDJRL Mini (Div 3) Player of the Year

Congratulations to Michael Hanratty and Justin Hall for achieving 20 years as players with our Club.

Congratulations to our premiership winning team the under 19s. The passion, self-belief and ‘will to win’ shown by Daniel Wagstaff and his team is a true inspiration to all St Christopher’s Club members.

A final special thanks to Jane, John, Matt and Tom Grealy for everything they do for this great Club 365 days of the year.

See you all in 2012

COACH’S REPORT

The future of football is here. Every player in this team were first time players. They all came a long way through the season. From the first game in the wet, where the rain made them itchy, to the last game where no one wanted to come off, we had a great season. Each week the parents all turned out to cheer on their boys and provide support. Even when it was the coldest of mornings there were still smiles all round. The boys listened and learned throughout the season and showed great potential and we can’t wait to see their progress next year. Special thanks to Justin our great trainer, who took control when needed and to Antony who was an organised manager. Under 6-4s you are a great bunch of boys, it was a privilege to coach you.

MANAGER’S REPORT

It was a year of many firsts, the first season of these young players’ lives, the first time I have been involved in and not union, and the first time I was coaxed into doing something that I didn't quite understand. Steve Burke asked me to be manager telling me 'there is nothing to it, it's a couple of meetings and a few emails here and there'. Well there was more to it than that, 14 but I must admit I loved being involved in such a great team with a great bunch of boys! It amazes me how much time and effort the volunteers put into this Club and without these people the Club would not exist. I applaud you all. We have a group of players that I know can grow into a very competitive team. With most of our boys aged 4 and 5 years old, we had the youngest and smallest group of players in the comp and they always held their heads high and played with commitment. A big thank you to Steve and Justin for doing such a fantastic job as coach and trainer and also for their endless patience throughout the year! I would also like to thank all the parents for all their help and assistance throughout the year.

PLAYER PROFILES

Lachlan George: Tall and ready to run. Lachlan listened and learned at each training session and improved each time he took to the field. He made some great runs and tackles and it will be good to see him improve even further next season.

Billy Burke: Enjoyed playing the game with his friends. He had many great runs and his height proved to be his best defence. Billy was a great friend to everyone in the team and provided many a good laugh.

Lachlan Burke: As the youngest player in the club, was slow to start but soon began to get the hang of the game. Through the season Lachlan developed his tackling skills and liked to be known as Jamal on the field. Great finish to the season.

Rhys Gitsham: Through the season we worked on tackling and making runs and from each training session came confidence and a lot of fun. To be able to score a try in his first season and especially being up against much bigger opponents is a credit. 1st year done, it will only be better next year.

Lucas Pengue: You wouldn’t think Lucas had never played football before. He was one of the smallest in the competition but knew how to use this to his advantage, scoring tries and making great tackles with no fear. Good to see him progress further next year.

Lucas Cassar: An excellent player in the competition. Lucas has great speed and knows how to use it. His covering tackles stopped many a try this season. As our leading try scorer he led from the front. It will be great to see him back next season bigger and better.

Daniel Raish: Had a great 1st year. Daniel was very quiet at training, but was always listening. So come game day he tackled well, made good runs and supported his team mates. He really made the opposition work hard to bring him down. See you next year.

Marcus Khoury: Is a very enthusiastic player. Making run after run and tackle after tackle. As the season went on Marcus showed great improvement and his fend was the envy of the competition. We look forward to seeing him again next year.

Mark Bashira: A tough player who showed the opposition that he meant business when he took to the field. His tackling technique improved with each game and it was unfortunate the season ended so soon. Looking forward to next season with this great player.

MANAGER’S REPORT

What a great year. I come from a soccer background and have played very little rugby league myself, so when Hayden said he wanted to play rugby league I thought that it would be good for him to play a sport that I did not know a great deal about. Next thing you know, he is playing league, and I am the manager.

I am so glad that he chose rugby league, especially St Christophers. This Club is full of great people. It is well organised and very official, which makes us all feel that our kids are going to be pointed in all the right directions and are going to be safe out there on the field.

Thank you to all the parents for getting the kids to training and to the games. I found all the parents were very easy to get along with and some good friendships have been formed. Thanks for turning up early to help with the BBQ and for getting down to The Diggers for raffles and a few drinks. 16

Thank you to all the kids for getting out there and having a go. We didn’t have a lot of wins but every week they turned up and had a go and had lots of fun.

Finally, thank you Matt for coaching the boys, Tom for being the trainer and Damien for being the junior trainer and ball boy. You guys did a great job. You kept the boys interested, showed them how to play safe and they all had such a great time at training and at the games.

Most of the boys will be going up to U7s next year except for Jack and Mitchell who will stay around in U6s for one more year. Wow, they will be a great asset to the U6s considering they were both playing so well this year. Good luck boys.

Thanks again everyone and hope to see you all again next year.

PLAYER PROFILES

Hayden Swibel: This was Hayden’s first year of footy and played like a natural, he listened at training and was like a sponge. He had the triple threat of ability. He could kick goals, score tries and his cover defence was one of the best. Looking forward to big things in the future.

Thomas Forrester: Tom Forrester or as he had the ability to split the defence with wicked side steps, he was another sponge at training although he was very quiet but showed his aggressiveness with his amazing tackling techniques in the games. A pleasure to coach.

Mitchell Rowles: Mitch was one of our two young guys, he was quiet at the start of the year but really came into his straps towards the end. Mitch ran hard and straight like a front rower, and could pull off a try saving tackle or two.

Ryan Klem: Ryan was very fast and used this to his advantage all year, scoring 16 tries this season and a whopping 5 in one game. Ryan’s defence was consistent throughout the year.

Murray Hardy: Murray loved to tackle and showed it in every game with rock solid defence. Murray was hesitant at running but after scoring his first try really became dangerous with a big don’t argue he made his own.

Matthew Cutrupi: Matt was in his second year of footy this year and really came along well, having lots of runs and making tackles every game. Matt finally crossed for his first well deserved try in the last round of the season.

Dejahan Karora: Dejahan was a late addition to the team, he really came into his own towards the end of the year, and was extremely hard to stop when he built up a head of steam.

Jack Hanratty: Jack being the youngest in the side didn’t play like that, he is lightning fast and used it all the time, he played dummy half all season and was more than happy to have last run and tackle in the middle of the field, trained hard and it really paid off.

Nathan Fanning: Nathan in his second year went from strength the strength, his defence improved out of sight and his running continued to be hard. Nathan also scored his first try at the gala day.

Thomas O’Grady: Although this was Tom’s second year he only played a handful of games however when he played he tried his hardest and was always a pleasure to have around.

Cooper Turpie-Smith: Cooper was in his first year and tried really hard, however he made the decision halfway through the year to come back next year. 17

COACH’S REPORT

As well as it being my first year as a coach, 2011 was the also the first time for the manager, trainers and a lot of the kids. From the beginning we knew we had a lot of work to do, and all of the kids improved immensely from the first game to the last. Their skill levels and dedication increased through the year. There was a lot of fun and laughs to be had, as well as a few tears. There was a lot of close matches, and some of the opposition could not believe that these boys were the same team at the end of the year, their game improved that much!

I would like to thank all of the parents, siblings and grandparents who helped with setting up the field and with the BBQ's, and who consistently turned up for raffles duty, this is a vital part of the Club and is greatly appreciated by all. 18

A special thank you to our manager Chris for all of his hard work throughout the year, if it were not for him we would not have been able to accomplish what we did, not only the team and match organisation, but also for organising our fantastic tracksuits. Also thanks to our two trainers, Charlie and Mark for all their help at training and games. I would especially like to thank ‘ “CPE ” for their sponsorship by supplying tracksuits for the boys and jackets for the coaching staff. I'm sure the vocal cords of the coaching staff will deserve a well earned rest in the off-season as coaching 5 and 6 year olds is an interesting but rewarding challenge!

All of the boys worked very hard this year and should be very proud of themselves and what they achieved. Their commitment and skills will be a force to be reckoned with in 2012.

MANAGER’S REPORT

What an honour and privilege it was to be associated with such a great bunch of kids, coaching staff, Club and families involved. After taking up the role of team manager, I found myself loving every minute of my involvement with this team, and I would not take that back for anything!

The boys in the Under 6-1s grew together on and off the field, and that bond that a football team should have, grew very quickly within all of them. That wouldn’t be possible without the guidance of the coach Tim, and trainers Mark and Charlie, who set great examples and taught the boys what playing in a football team is all about. The guidance and support that every parent and family member of each child gave throughout the season to the whole team, and the Club itself too reflected by the team’s behaviour. That’s what teamwork is all about and when that is shown from parents, coaches, trainers, managers, Club committee members, and all people associated with such a good Club, a 6 year old child recognises that and respects that.

I’m sure that each and every child in this team will be there at registration day for next season, keen to wear the maroon and gold colours of the Saints and eager to play in what will hopefully be a super season 2012!

PLAYER PROFILES

Toto’a Lynch: Toto’a is a very quiet boy off the field but his defensive skills have proved impeccable. You can tell he loves his footy, and he tends to inspire the rest of the team with what he does on the field and at training.

Peter Assaf: Peter is probably the quickest player in the team, who always plays with an ‘I mean business’ look on his face. His tackling has improved out of sight throughout the season, and is a valuable asset to our side.

Owen Millar: Owen sets a great example for the rest of the team with everything he does during the games and at training. He can read the play well and knows where and when to cross that tryline.

Kian Boyne: Kian has been our most consistent player all year, and is another that leads by example. He has a ‘never say die’ attitude, and has a heart as big as Phar Laps. He was the team’s leading tryscorer, and he was awarded the teams ‘Best & Fairest’ award for 2011.

Oscar Moseley: Oscar is the biggest boy in the team, and intimidated the opposition with his hard running technique, kind of like a raging bull. He showed how much he loved the game throughout the season. Oscar was awarded with the teams ‘Most Improved’ award for 2011.

19

Zane Kourouche; Zane is a quiet but dedicated player, and is someone that his team mates loved having on their side. Being one of the smallest and youngest players in this side, he never took a backward step.

Jack Zanbaka: Jack showed this year in his first year of playing footy that he loved being with his team mates on the field and at training. Not only did his skills and confidence improved as the year went on, but also his passion for the game.

Connall Millar: Connall showed a huge amount of improvement throughout this season, and always listened to what he was told. He added a lot towards the teams defence as the year went on, and it was great to see it come out

Connor Bryce: Connor has a great footy mind and his ‘never give in’ attitude was a great example to the rest of the team. He tirelessly worked in both attack and defence and showed the rest of the team exactly what the word commitment meant.

Gabriel Melki: Gabriel is full of energy and showed how much he loves his footy by his enthusiasm. His around the bootlaces tackles were awesome to watch, and I’m sure they will just get better as the seasons progress.

Sean Amy: Sean always gives 100% and has a fiery and niggling attitude towards the opposition. Another player who read the plays well, and knew exactly when it was time for him to have a scoot from dummy half, almost always resulting in a try.

MANAGER’S REPORT

A fantastic year by the boys which for the majority of them was their first year of playing footy. The season started with a bang with the boys winning three of their first four games and the boys were getting very used to singing the Saints victory song. However as the other teams somehow managed to get video footage of our games and study our game plan the wins dried up until the back end of the season when we managed to finish the year with a win. With the rain delays we still managed to come in equal 4th but we missed out on the finals as we were relegated to 5th based on for and against as ours was 2 points worse than 4th place.

Although we missed the finals I think that the boys should be very proud of the efforts they displayed throughout the year and more importantly the way they improved in the last few games of year. The last three or four games of the season the boys really started to show some structure in both attack and in defence and showed that they had been listening and paying attention at training. With the potential and development the team was showing we wished that there were a few extra weeks of the season so that they could have gelled even further.

I would like to give a massive thank you to Coach Trent and Trainer Daniel. These two young men gave up their time twice a week for training and on Saturday mornings for the game. They both play in the Grand Final winning Under 19 team and for them to offer to coach a group of Under 7s is very impressive and generous of them. The boys were lucky that they had the opportunity to soak up a lot of footy knowledge from Trent and Daniel and learn more about the 21 game. Our season would not have been possible or as enjoyable without your time and hard work.

Thank you to Brian and Joe who took over training duties for a few weeks while Trent and Daniel were away. Our resident judge Joe did a great job every week at the game and knew the rule not to yell out at the kids unlike me who only had that job for one week before it was handed back to Joe.

Thanks to all the players, parents, grandparents and supporters who managed to get to the games every weekend to support the boys. We never had a game when we did not put a full team on the field. The boys loved going to training and to play every Saturday. Thanks also to the brothers and sisters that fulfilled the ball boy duties, this was mixed but mostly covered by Kye Muscat – Thanks.

Special thanks to Dave Muscat who filled in for both Carly and me at the fortnightly meetings as we were unable to attend. Dave also organised the 3-2-1 awards plus numerous other duties. Big thanks to my co-manager Carly who did the vast majority of the manager duties and did a superb job at it as well. Carly ensured that all the parents were kept informed of what was happening every weekend and within the club and also did a great job of the scoring duties on game day every week.

Look forward to another great year with Saints next year.

PLAYER PROFILES

Steven Coble: One of the teams most improved as he started to discover his potential towards the end of the season with quite a few damaging runs with the ball proving to be a very hard player to bring down. High expectations next year for this future front rower.

Christopher Rizk: A great year from Chris who loved to go for a sneaky try from dummy half close to the line on the last tackle. Chris was always close to the action and is very strong in defence. The teams top goal scorer also. A very reliable team member.

William Laming: Look out when William got into open space, he had speed to burn and scored a few tries throughout the season. Williams defence improved as the season progressed also. An integral member of the team.

Ky Rodoreda: Another one of the speedsters in the team which resulted in a number of tries for Ky. A fantastic first season of playing league from Ky and he improved as the season progressed. A natural winger or centre in the future.

Jack Martin: A great first year in league for Jack. The top try scorer and liked to try to organise the team around the field in both attack and defence. Jack loved to try to get an offload away before being brought to the ground with the ball. Jack received the CBDJRL Mini Div 3 Best and Fairest Award – Congratulations.

Isaac Tahhan: A fantastic year from Isaac. Isaac scored quite a few tries and was always in the thick of the game both in attack making plenty of metres and very solid in defence. A very reliable tackler who saved as many tries as he scored. A vital member of the team. Well done Isaac.

Slater Simpson: Another of the big improvers this year. Started the season kicking the first goal of the year and improved as the season went on breaking many tackles as he ran the ball hard at the defence.

22 Braith Cosgrove: Showed great enthusiasm and improved with every game this season. A solid defender and looked his best with the ball in his hand. A valuable team player who loved to be out on the field having a go. Well done on a good year Braith.

Blake Muscat: As the season went on Blake grew into a more rounded player improving in defence and taking the ball and finding space in attack. An excellent year from one of the big improvers of the team.

Blake Rackham: A fantastic season by Blake. Another solid team player who developed into a strong running and confident player as the year progressed. Blake’s defence was the key which prevented many tries. Great year Blake.

COACH’S REPORT

As a first time and new Coach at the Club, I had a very enjoyable and rewarding year. The team developed throughout the year and I did my best to apply and achieve the goals set out in the Junior League Coaching Course – i.e. the kids have fun, develop their skills, gain a better understanding and a love of the game. Most of the players were tried in a number of key roles based on their skill levels and by the end of the season, we had developed a consistent game plan and player positions for the team to suit each level of development and to balance the team for maximum competiveness.

Out of a possible 14 games, we only played a total of 11 games. Our final position on the ladder did not reflect the quality and the effort the team put in every week. It was a very competitive year and we only had the one win and one draw for the season, but we never gave up and put in every week. We should have also won our first game of the year against the last placed Rhinos, except for the coach not preparing the team to play without him on the field! Of the seven teams in the division, only 2 were other club’s number 2 teams, St. Johns and us, so we were mostly competing against the other club’s number 1 sides. Sports and Dragons were the standout teams and we competed with them for most of the game in the second round matches after being flogged by both in the first round matches. We were off our game in our only match against East Hills who finished third, had a draw and a close match against St. Johns (4th), which we could have easily won, and we were just beaten in close matches against Colts that could have gone either way. 24

I would like to thank the kids and their parents for their efforts, commitment and support throughout what was a challenging and rewarding year as a first time coach. A very special thank you to both Kylie our manager and Marty our trainer for all their time and assistance in organising and supporting the team and me. They really made my job as coach so much easier and enjoyable.

I hope to see all the kids back at the Club next year and wish them a well deserved and great off season break.

PLAYER PROFILES

Vincent Cassar: Vincent had an outstanding year and did a great job at saving many tries and often tackling the opposition over the sideline to give us possession. Fast, strong and evasive, with a step and a swerve, he also scored many tries down some tight sideline with a long striding running style like a bounding “” in full flight. He consistently converted goals and has all the skills.

Bianca Cutrupi: Bianca was a dream to coach and a great listener. She would follow instructions concisely and applied the game plans well, always talking to team in defence and attack. Fast, strong and with a great step she made plenty of metres out wide with limited opportunities, she shored up our defensive line and she was always prepared to do her bit for the team in defence.

Jarrod Field: Jarrod continued to improve though out the year. He has a good set off hands and provided a near mistake free service to our first receivers from dummy half. He has pace and a step and made some good yards up the middle with limited opportunities. He also made some good tackles at the end of the season on the much bigger opponents.

Ryan Jeffree: Ryan earned the nickname “The Axe” from me during the season because he would cut runners in half with his fearless, well timed and hard hitting defence. He is tough and strong and was always prepared to put his body on the line to make a tackle. He is also fast and made plenty of yards when he wound up and scored a notable length of the field try.

Saadi Kourouche: Saadi is big, strong and fast with a great step and had great year scoring plenty of tries. When he did not score he would still make plenty of metres and was always prepared to hit it up. His defence continued to improve throughout the year, getting more involved and moving up quickly in a line to stop the opposition attack, including a shoulder charge in our final game.

Cameron Macdonald: Cameron improved throughout the year getting more and more involved every week. He is big, fast, evasive and strong and the opposition always struggled to bring him down. He provided some great meters up the middle when he set his mind to it and was always keen to do his bit in defence as the season wore on with more and more tackles every week.

Georgio Minas: Georgio was by far our most improved player and grew in confidence in both defence and attack during the year. With limited opportunities he made some great runs, showing speed and evasiveness that caught me by surprise. By the end of the year he was tackling everything that moved and is destined to become a great tackler.

Thomas Ravel: Thomas loves his football and is passionate and ultra competitive, with untameable enthusiasm. Always the first up in defence, he led up our defensive line with his GO SAINTS charges and was our tackling machine. He has great understanding of the game. With leadership qualities and with good hands became our first receiver and organiser. His running was strong, hard and determined and he often put on a good step to beat the defence line. Of note was his chip over the top when we could not break the defensive line in one of our games.

25

Blake Shearer: Blake has a good football brain and great hands and complemented Thomas as first receiver. He is fast and evasive and has a great step. He made plenty of metres and was unlucky not to have scored more tries often beating most of the other team. He is strong and he continued to improve in defence throughout the year making more tackles every game and proved to be our most reliable goal kicker.

Jesse Sleiman: Jesse has great hands and a good understanding and love of the game. With a big ticker, he often provided the go forward running it up hard, straight and strong when we needed it, showing the bigger guys how it’s done. Fast and agile, with a swerve and a step he provided plenty of yards scoring a memorable try from dummy half against the Rhinos. Naturally strong with plenty of enthusiasm and determination, he was always involved in defence and made plenty of tackles.

COACH’S REPORT

The start of the footy season was upon us and we were inundated by a surge in new signings to the Club for the U7s. This would eventually see us fielding 3 teams in 2011, across 3 Divisions.

After the dust had settled and we separated into our respective teams the Div 1 team consisted of a new look Coaching staff and playing roster. The team would consist of 6 of the boys remaining from last year’s U6-1s, three U6-3 boys and a new addition to the Club. The boys had to adjust not only to a new coaching style, but to learn to bond with the new team structure also.

27 With the start of the footy trials came the expectation that we would have a very competitive season with the boys blitzing their opposition in all three trials, as well as stepping up and competing with some U8 teams as well.

The regular season started with us having a 10 all draw with Moorebank in round 1, then a controversial loss to Berala which would then sum up what was to be a season of dubious rulings which would cost us a place in the Semi Finals later in the year.

All that aside the boys were very competitive in their first year in Competition footy only losing the games we did by 2 or 4 points. It was a year of many interruptions meaning we couldn’t play any consistent footy with the most games we played in a row being the first 3 rounds. But to their credit the boys didn’t take long to gel as a team and developed together as a very tight unit by the end of the year.

The boys finished the season off strong, claiming the scalp of St Johns in the second last round, who would eventually be crowned Premiers at the end of the year. With the last round of the regular season they lost a nail biter to 34 - 30, who were Undefeated Minor Premiers and Grand Finalists.

With this season under their belts and bonding together as they did, it will stand them in good stead for next season where we they will hit the ground running and be more than competitive.

Finally I would like to thank our Manager Nerissa BAILEY and Trainer Michael CEISSMAN for their assistance during the year. I would also like to thank the parents of our team for helping out at training and game days and making my job a lot easier as well. Last but not least I would like to give a special mention and thank you to Matt WALKER for his tireless efforts on game days by writing our weekly match reports.

MANAGER’S REPORT

The 2011 Football season started strongly for the U7s, there were 32 boys signed up to play. With this many boys, grading was going to be tough. The boys were all aware they may not be playing with the same boys that they had spent the last year or two with. Some of the boys were apprehensive as this was their first year of grading.

After the team was selected, the boys got to meet their new team mates and over the coming weeks bonded very well. It was a great to see them work together as a team. By the end of the season they had all developed their own strengths and were coming together as a strong team, a team to look out for.

As the friendships grew throughout the season and with the boys getting on so well together as a team, we had our first “Football Weekend Away” which was lots of fun for both the kids and parents.

It was a pleasure being the team manager for a great bunch of boys and their parents. To all of the mums and dads who assisted with canteen, BBQ, timekeeping and fundraising a huge thank you. To our coach Shane Kennedy and trainer Michael Ceissman, thank you for all of your time and effort put into coaching the boys and teaching them new drills. To our team reporter Matthew Walker, thank you for the thorough job you did in writing the weekly team reports. To all of the boy’s big brothers thank you for being ball boys and a special thanks to all the boys for such an enjoyable year. Hope to see you all next year for another fantastic season.

PLAYER PROFILES

Kaled Arnaout: Rough, tough and indestructible. He gave 110 % every game, literally throwing himself into everything he did, playing himself to a standstill. Kaled developed into a very skilful and illusive runner of the ball.

Trent Bailey: Trent was thrust into dummy half, but was no way restricted in this role that he made it his own specialised position. He developed the art of scoring tries from both dummy half and with a run-around play at ease. He was one of our best defenders making some great one on one tackles.

Zacarie Ceissman: Zac grew in confidence as the season progressed and became a very integral part of the team. With his willingness to listen and learn he developed into a very capable and passionate footballer with some great defence and strong ball running.

Sean Foster: Sean was mister consistent. He developed into a very confident and competent team player. He would do the hard yards in attack as well as providing great support play putting himself in the right place at the right time.

Jared Kennedy: Jared stepped up to the plate at first receiver this year and controlled and steadied the team, guiding us around the park. He had the uncanny ability to create something out of nothing and was a very elusive runner. His cover defence at full back was impeccable saving numerous tries.

Luke Moloney: Luke took a few games to settle in this year, but showed glimpses of his stunning form from last year. His defence improved out of sight towards the back end of the season, putting his body on the line and competing well.

Ricardo Oloapu: This was Ricardo’s first year with the team and Club. With his strong running and defence he became a player to be feared in the Div 1 competition. He was very agile and possessed a great fend and when he backed his ability he was unstoppable.

Jordan Saleh: Jordan was a very elusive runner, with speed and agility combined and a side step to match anyone in the competition. When his confidence was at a high he was untouchable scoring some brilliant long range tries. He developed into a strong defender by the end of the season.

Bailey Standaloft: Bailey was our No 1 goal kicker this year and was faultless under pressure when called upon every week. A very tough and capable player who played well above his weight every week and only knew one way, straight up the middle.

Alexander Walker: Alex developed into a very well rounded player growing in confidence and stature with every game. Towards the back end of the season he scored some great individual long range tries using his speed and ability to get on the outside of defenders.

COACH’S REPORT

This year saw us move up to Division 1 and oh boy didn’t we feel it. The first half of the year was just a blur with us being belted by all who played us which really hurt our confidence. The latter part of the year really saw us get back to our old selves with us holding our own against all sides. It was really good to see all the boys really continue to try their guts out against the much larger and quicker boys. Once we got our confidence back we were a much better side that were competitive against all sides even having the grand finalists 18-0 at the first break. Next year will be a great year for this team with the ultimate goal of a premiership being within reach! Big predictions I know but we have an even bigger pool of talent and hunger to pull from. Bring on 2012!!

MANAGER’S REPORT

After an exciting and relatively successful 2010 in the under 7s, 2011 proved to be a challenging year for the boys. We were promoted to Division 1 and unfortunately tasted success just once this year, ironically against the team that narrowly defeated us in last year’s grand final.

We commenced the season with a new coach in Brett Hayes and on behalf of all the team and parents we thank him for his level of passion, knowledge and commitment he brought to the table – Thanks Brett. We also had the pleasure of having Chris Hains as trainer for the first time and his level of dedication and enthusiasm was most welcolme – Thank Chris. 30

We had the majority of players from last year backing up again who had clearly benefitted from a season or two under their belts in addition to blooding two new players who were making their debuts.

Whilst on the surface the year appears to be less than satisfactory, it is fair to say under Brett’s guidance the team was always competitive and never gave up. The team continued to improve and were starting to understand the game plan which Brett was implementing, and this will surely hold us in good stead for next year.

Regardless of the win/loss record it was exciting and rewarding to see the improvement and development of the kids both individually and collectively as a team, and we were always proud of your performances. The eagerness and willingness to learn, attendance to all training sessions and pride you kids showed especially after only winning one game is something you should be very proud of – WELL DONE BOYS.

I have got every confidence that with natural improvement, continued understanding of the game plan, working hard on fitness and tackling and listening to the coaching staff, we will see 2012 as a year to remember.

Finally I would like to conclude by stating how much pleasure I derived from being involved with the team this year and thank Brett and Chris for their tireless efforts - and to the parents a big thank you for your assistance and making my job a lot easier.

PLAYER PROFILES

Marshall Poynter: A super talented footballer with amazing speed and hands to boot. In his second year of football Marshall has earned the 2011 best and fairest player despite missing several games through the year. Should really back up this year’s limited opportunities with a stellar 2012, if form and talent is anything to go by.

Michael Forrester: Well what can we say about Lil’ Mick except courage and absolute dedication. Mick is probably the smallest player in the competition but possesses the most amazing amount of courage and love for the game. His dummy half work through the year was superb. He regularly tackled those that were literally twice his size and made them look quite silly when he had his hands on the ball. Likely to come into his own next year.

Blake Hayes: A real enigma with a great footy brain and all the skills, size, speed and footwork required. Has a great fend and step. Once his defence gets back on track he will be one of our most valuable players. Looking for him to step up in 2012 and lead the outside backs while taking the pressure of the big boys.

Ethan Burke: Our resident super boot that has left many a defence chasing the ball back into their own in-goal. He has a superb cover tackle which is greatly assisted by an amazing amount of speed. Ethan is capable of bringing any player down when he trusts his ability and has scored many long range tries through the year. Next year should prove a good one for Ethan with the bigger field allowing him more room in attack and likely to see much more play on the edges.

James Eivers: One of our first year players that quickly developed a hunger for the sport. He has good speed and when he further develops his ball skills he will surely become an invaluable member of the 2012 team. Should continue to prosper as his skills improve in the next year.

Sam Gay: Our other first year player that definitely has the necessary get up and go to enjoy the physical side of the game. He has a great build for footy and when he further develops his ball handling and focus he will show his true ability as he has an awesome desire to win at all costs. 31

Klayton Kilpatrick: A very mercurial player that is capable of thinking way beyond the game he is actually involved in. Klayton at the age of 8 is able to produce feats on the footy field that his peers would not even imagine let alone complete with success. He has great footwork off both sides and although it never appears so is actually quite quick. Next year will see Klayton controlling more of the play with his superior thinking and understanding of the game.

Thomas Davenport: Our robust number seven had yet another solid year and only narrowly missed out on the best and fairest. He is the complete package with what is probably the perfect tackling technique and can really tear a defence to pieces with his good speed and great footwork. Next year should see Thomas excel as he develops combinations with other players that will surely see points flowing for all.

Braidon Brito: Braidon really stepped up late in the year as he finally gained some confidence in his ability to bust the defence wide open. He now just charged hard and straight into the defence and leaves them thinking “what the bugger was that?” He has a great set of hands and late in the year also developed into a great defender. Next year Braidon will be tasked with putting the defence on the back foot through his blockbusting runs that he showed late in the year while scaring the opposition ball runners with his aggressive tackling.

Joe Faanoi: Joe really made an impact from the very limited time he was able to play. Joe just keeps going and going no matter how many defenders there are hanging off him. The limited time Joe played this year was a real shame as he absolutely loves the game and possesses a great ethic when on the field. If given the opportunity to play the whole season next year Joe will certainly be an handful for all opposition.

Alexander Passarelli: Alex is somewhat of a gentle giant with that fire just below the surface ready to explode at any moment. Alex was super consistent all year and really led our forwards in defence and also made his fair share of line breaks. Next year if we can draw the fire out Alex will really cause some defenders to think twice before they attempt to tackle him as well as inflicting carnage on the opposition ball runners.

Connor Hains: Connor (Raging Bull) will hit the defensive line at full pace and then disappear for what appears to be an eternity but then he will come out the other side with as much pace as he entered the line. Connor probably busted more defensive lines through sheer power than any other player in the comp. Connor’s tackling in the first portion of the year was a little disappointing but definitely showed that he can match it with all comers late in the year. Next year will see Connor step into his own as he further develops his ability to hit the ball running and to put more sting into his tackles.

MANAGER’S REPORT

A year to remember. The start of the season was looking bleak to say the least, wondering if we would have a team at all was concerning however players were coming out of the wood work and finally a team was produced. A few veterans from the previous season had returned and a few new signings to the Saints club made their debut. All in all it was a very exciting time.

The kids showed a lot of enthusiasm throughout the year and good friendships were made. With only 2 wins for the season and a draw the team spirit was never broken due to the love they have for the game of rugby league. Each player this season stood up and gave it their all and individually their fitness and skills were maturing.

In conclusion thanking all team members for making this year exciting and enjoyable and hoping that all players return next year. Also a special mention to Voltaire Carlos for taking on the trainer’s role and John Kassis for taking the coach’s position. It takes a lot of commitment to be involved on the coaching staff, sacrificing their time and efforts so thank you very much.

Also mentions to Greg Bryce for constantly being available to help the team by running the line, cooking on the barbecue, helping in the canteen and running water on game days - thanks mate. Simon Standaloft being another major contributor for standing in when trainers, manager or coach was absent, thank you.

PLAYER PROFILES

Angus Lake: Undeniably this year’s best defender. Also contributed heavily offensively scoring tries consistently, however Angus’s defence was outstanding. The key to his performance this year was his consistency. Showing up to training each week and training hard and enjoying the team environment. Next year will be a hell of a season. Well done mate.

Lachlan Maric: What a season! Lachlan scoring 12 tries in just 2 games proves that he is a force to be reckoned with. This year’s best attacking player. When the chips were down Lachlan was always looked upon for points. A great season, his strong running and speed being his best asset. His aggressive style of play was fantastic never taking a backward step, watch out for him next year. Well done Lachlan.

Ethan Carlos: A debutant to rugby league however you wouldn’t know it. It was as though Ethan had been playing for a couple of seasons, but his improvement in all aspects of the game was rapid. His technique in tackling especially was second to none. His dummy half roll and general reading of the game was brilliant. Mate, I’ll see you next season.

Dominic Kassis: Another debutant for our team this year, not from our area but definitely welcomed. His presence this year grew from game to game and was a benefit to the team, not just through his ability as a team player but through friendships that he’s made which has given him a lot of confidence. A definite candidate for most improved player. Great to have you on board this season mate and keep up the great work.

Omar Arnaout: Omar, a second year veteran. Started out the season on fire, leading the way for the rest of his team mates in attack and defence. His quick runs and versatility was outstanding. Not the biggest kid on the field but that wasn’t an issue at all. Pound for pound mate your season was excellent.

Liam Bryce: Another second year veteran, this year Liam labelled himself as a defensive magnet. Every opponent coming his way had to get through him. A massive improvement from last year. Liam’s tackling grew with confidence throughout the year and his consistency in training definitely paid dividends. Good work buddy, looking forward to next season.

Zac Standaloft: Zac, shall we just call this kid lightning McQueen. He’s quick, in my eyes a definite winger. His sheer speed and side stepping his forte. Also bagging a few tries this season with ease. A late surge toward the end of the season an obvious one with him contributing in all aspects of the game. Well done mate, next season for you will be promising.

Zac Ali: Zac was damaging with his impressive hit ups this season and his tackling improved a lot. Receiving an award for one of his games this season showed how much potential he has. Great to have you on board mate, look forward to next season.

Connor Osborn: A kid with size and a lot of ability. Played this season with high intensity and aggression. A pleasure to have on the team. His improvement in attack was very effective toward the middle of the season and grew with every game. A great team player. Great year mate.

Jeremiah Makar: A player to a previous club, playing his first season with the Saints - a win win for us. A very strong ball runner which was displayed throughout the year. He can tackle extremely well. A kid with a lot of promise, no doubt. Looking forward to a big year next season. Great work mate.

Matt McGlynn: A late signing for our side, wish he came earlier. He has all the skills a footballer should have. If only we had him for the whole season out team would have had a few more wins.

34 Pleasure to have him on board. Hope he’s available next year, a definite starter. Good work buddy.

Jayden Laming: A new edition for the Saints this year, a great season indeed. An incredible transformation from the beginning of the year till the end of the season. Explosive runs from out of nowhere, looking forward to what he’s capable of next year. Great effort mate.

Sione Sika: Another late signing this season. A lot of pace, a great step, this kid’s got it all. A fantastic player, one to watch over the coming years. His consistency at training paid off. A very likable team mate who always put in 100%. Can’t wait for next year mate. Great work.

COACH’S REPORT

This year I was not sure what to expect, one or two training sessions before the first game of the season but we could see we had a lot of talent in the side. Working out the combinations and trialing the boys in positions they were not used to was always going to take time, especially when the competition was under way. I don't think the boys really got used to our training techniques, fitness sessions and 'discipline' we put in place until after round one and having no reserves in grade didn't help our cause.

To their credit the boys did not give up. We started the season with a couple of close losses and draws (some on the bell), before getting our first win in round 12. The boys were great turning up to training on Tuesdays for fitness sessions and would get flogged and for them to stay so motivated showed their mental fitness. I did sometimes forget these boys were only nine but they thrived training like they were in A grade.

With so many close games in round one we were due for a win and it came with a great win against St Johns who were placed 3rd on the ladder. We had never beaten them before and this was a big morale booster for the boys and the coaching staff and parents. They were playing with a lot of structure in attack and our defence was solid, with the addition of two news players to the squad we now had a bench and this made a big difference to our team, especially for the bigger boys as the pace of the games was increasing as the boys got fitter. This win was followed by 2

36 more against Moorebank and Dragons who were placed 4th at the time. We showed we could match all the teams in this competition and were no longer being beaten by high scores.

To say we competed against the side who won the competition and we drew or beat every other side in the competition is very rewarding, we know that our boys are competitive enough, the talent is there and the belief is slowly growing amongst the boys that they are good enough to be in the top of the competition. To miss out on the semis by a whisker reflects our season. I am very proud of how well the boys have done this year and thank them for all their efforts and hard work. Thank you too to our trainers Liam and Paul and our tireless manager Raelene.

Look forward to next year.

PLAYER PROFILES

Ben Pele: Has a lot of natural ability and is one of those players who is good at attack and in defence. Prolific try scorer from anywhere in the paddock even scoring 5 tries against Moorebank in round 13. He is a game breaker and had a good season for us. Well done

Reily Dundas: One of those players you don't have to tell twice what to do, he is a great trainer, especially in our fitness sessions always at the front. This year he pulled off the hit of the season against Sports, head on tackle forced the ball loose which led to us scoring a try, highlight of the season.

Malakai Manu: His first season in grade and he had some strong games this year in attack and defence gaining confidence as the season went on and he can be damaging when he realises his ability.

Dylan Hema: Showed this year that he has stepped up a level in this competition. I always look to see how our players rate playing against the top sides, the way they handle the pressure and if they are going to step up. Through this whole season Dylan was man of the match against the top four sides. It came down to his attitude at training where he seemed to thrive which resulted in an excellent season for him.

Nathan Bishara: The Benji Marshall of our side played in the halves this year and was instrumental in our winning streak. He has a natural passing game on both sides where a lot of other kids struggle at this age and an excellent kicking game.

Jon Pengue: One of the two players this year we had to move to a position where they did not want to play, convincing Jon that the dummy half was crucial for us to have someone who can pass the ball from both sides (which only a few boys in our team could do) he really showed his strengths. Everyone wants to run the ball and score tries so for Jon to give that up and put his team first says a lot about him.

Aiden Davidson: Is one of a handful of players you can put anywhere on the field. He had a slow start to the season for his standards but stepped up against the top sides when the pressure on. He was instrumental in our winning streak, never taking a backward step. He is a born leader and finished the season in style, especially in our last game.

Mark Kitiona: Another player we put in a position where he did not want to play, always asking if he could change positions, but like Jon he put the team first. He could have easily played several positions and had a good season.

Livai Tikoipau: Came in the second half of the season and hadn't played since he was in under 6s. He was a pleasant surprise playing his first game against Sports and created havoc making

37 some block busting runs and some big tackles and his form continued till the end of the season. Nicknamed "The Tank" he just runs one way - straight!

Solomona Tohovaka: Another great late additon to our side, having never played footy before this didn't stop him trying, especially in defence. Never easy learning the game in grade but was always willing, great effort.

Lachlan McAlpine: Another player who stepped up this year, could score tries anywhere on the paddock but it was his defence that sent a shiver up your spine pulling off some big hits. If he gets his training right putting more shoulder into his defence he will pull off even more bone jarring tackles. Very consistent, always having a good game.

Brodie Erskine: Arguably our most improved player this year he played on the wing most of the season but with his defensive efforts you would think he was playing in the forwards. Very rewarding as a coach when you compare how he was at the start of the season to now and by season end had gained respect from all the boys pulled off man of the match performances in defence. Awesome effort.

Meihana Nelson: "Twinkle toes" this guy knows how good he can be, light on his feet and can step on a dime and he has great potential. A real character on our team, missed some training and games this year but plays really well when confident.

COACH’S REPORT

What a year! From not being sure if we would even field a side to getting within 1 game of a grand final. With most of the boys coming back and 4 new kids, we were confident the boys would at least be competitive.

There's an old saying "If you score more points than the other team you will win". With this in mind our main focus for the year was defence, and I tell you what, that old saying is true - when the boys defended well, we won, when they didn’t, we lost. To the boys credit, apart from two or three games this year, they were in every other game because they believed in themselves, played as a team and never gave up, it was great to watch and because of this I believe be we were the best TEAM in the comp.

A special thanks to Michael and James, trainers on paper but were so much more, and at times just like - I was happy to sit back and let them take control. Probably a bit too much, but you guys were doing such a great job. Thanks heaps!

To Paula our manager/tackling bag, for your first year as manager I think you did a fabulous job and thanks for reminding us on a weekly basis that the boys needed to have their water bottles, jerseys and nails clipped. On a number of occasions Paula would have a run against the boys, and at times run straight through them. Move over Benji !!

39 To the parents, family and friends, thank you for supporting the team throughout the year and being very vocal from the sidelines, also helping out with BBQ and canteen duties. Thanks to the dads who helped out at training and filled in as touchies, and to all who helped with drop offs and pick ups to ensure we had all hands on deck, this all makes a huge difference.

To the boys, thank you for making my first year as coach a successful one and I hope I helped you learn a thing or two about footy, because you guys definitely taught me a thing or two about coaching. Enjoy the off season, don’t stop kicking that footy around and we hope to see you all back again next year.

PLAYER PROFILES

Ben Moloney: We weren’t sure if Ben was going to play this year, but thank God he did. Ben played most of his footy out in the centres and was a hand full for the opposition as it always took two to bring him down, but it was Ben’s strong defence especially at the back end of the season which proved to be most valuable to us. Your best season yet Ben!

Camille Sleiman: Camille backed up last year with a very strong season again. He gained more metres than anyone in the side and was our first choice goal kicker. Camille got us out of trouble a few times this year with some brilliant footwork and powerful running, especially in those must win games. Camille’s defence in our last game was great, if it moved he did his best to try and stop it and making 4 great tackles from marker was great to watch.

Cory Jenks: Cory is one of the smallest but toughest players on the field, he was our dummy half and did a great job. Cory is the most enthusiastic player I have seen in years, it’s great to see a kid get up after bringing down the biggest player on his own, make another tackle and then look to the sideline with a smile on his face almost looking for approval on a job well done. Well you definitely have my approval Cory!

Daniel Cutrupi: The most senior player in our side really stepped up when we needed him. We didn’t have a fullback but he was the closest thing we had to one. Daniel’s tackles out wide saved us on many occasions and he read the play well enough to know when to drop back. He also scored some memorable tries that even would be proud of.

Dean Gazalis: When this guy wants to run he is very hard to stop, the problem is he doesn’t do it enough, but when he does it is great to see. The great try scored from a scrum in the semi against Moorebank to keep us alive in the finals was one of my favourites. Dean was the only player not to miss a shot at goal this year. Great kicking Deano!

Eddie Coble: Eddie started the year with a bang, taking out our first man of the match award with a very strong game against the Bulls. Unfortunately Eddie spent a few weeks on the sideline due to a knee injury which slowed his progress, to his credit his effort did not suffer as he soldiered on through the semis. Look after the leg for next year Ed, we’ll need you!

Jarrad Crawford: This year Jarrad woke up to himself and left soccer to play real footy. Right from the start you could see he was going to be an asset to the side. Every week his game improved both in attack and defence and some of the tackles he came up with were both great and scary at the same time –‘you need to put your head to the side’!! Great season Jarrad.

JD McCullock: When JD is in the right frame of mind he can be the most influential player in the side, being the first to chase through after a kick and make that BIG tackle that would get all the boys fired up. JD is a very versatile player, and looked equally at home hitting the ball up or spreading it out to the wing. He was also our first choice kicker in general play. Thanks for a strong year JD

40 Jordan Tofilau: Another good season from Jordan, although it was not quality ball he received, it was quality he always gave back, with strong running and a lot of work in defence. Jordan was not afraid to put his body on the line to make the important tackles, and there were a lot of them. The only negative for Jordan this year was that he was unable to score after running through the entire Bulls’ side only to be taken down centimeters short. You deserved to have that try Jordan!

Jordan Raish: Jordan started the year as our main go forward guy, but was moved after a few weeks to first receiver which he clearly enjoyed and made his own after scoring three tries. He also became our permanent captain, leading by example not only on game day, but at training. Apart from a couple of brain explosion kicks late in the year, Jordan more often than not came up with the right decision. A better technique and more confidence saw a big improvement in Jordan’s defence. Keep it up Jordan.

Mark Walter: Mark joined us later in the year and played his first ever game of footy. Match fitness and confidence were Mark’s biggest hurdles, but as the weeks went on, his confidence grew and he became a lot harder to stop. With more training and self belief Mark you can definitely be one of the team’s greatest assets!

Reece Porter: Reece was not quite switched on when it came to training, but on the field he was a completely different person. Reece was our straightest running player and no matter how big or small the opposition he would always take them on. Can’t wait to see you next year all ready and focused to train and play. Good first year with the Club Reece.

Vincent Quintal: Playing his second year of footy, Vince was one of our most consistent players, he was always there to take a hit up and most times made good metres. He was very solid in defence and was always one of the first to be moving up and putting pressure on the other team, especially his chasing from marker. Great year Vinnie!

COACH’S REPORT

Congratulations to the U10-1s on keeping their place in the first division comp. This year looked like it was going to be an extremely difficult one for the boys, stepping up a division from being undefeated premiers in the U9-2s and becoming an underdog team in the 10-1s. With only 12 players in the side we regularly played without a reserve and even played short several times which made winning even more difficult - not that winning is what the game is all about! As the season progressed so too did the boys’ skills and they really started putting together what proper footy should look like, with depth running onto the ball, numbers in defence and talk on the field. Moving up to 1st division was a real eye opener for me and I’m sure it was for the boys too, seeing how strong and quick paced some of the teams were. It’ll take some serious training and a bit of dedication in future seasons if the boys are to catch up. Big thank yous to:

 JD senior, the other coach... simply couldn’t have pulled it off without your help.  Dave Wylie, top trainer... just can’t control his nerves come game time.  Scott Whyte, the manager... 5 gold stars for Scott's efforts. Is there a “Manager of the Year” award? 42 To the parents, thanks for your support and for bringing your boys along to training and on game days. It was a privilege for the coaching staff to be involved with such a terrific bunch of kids. Thanks also for being involved with the team activities like time keeping, running the touch line, doing BBQ, canteen and raffles etc. Special thanks to Dave Macdonald who kept the stats for us through the year – this was valuable and we really struggled on the weeks that you were away.

PLAYER PROFILES

Lachlan Jordan: Got some pace on him he does. Lock did a top job taking care of his right wing... It didn’t take long and brilliance struck early in the season for Locky when he linked up with Kueva out wide, taking a beautiful long ball to zip down the sideline and score. Good stuff Lock, pretty strong in defence also. Blake Wiley: Ah Blake. Not one to have his footy head on at training, throwing plenty of crazy passes and carrying on like a good sort. All the same though, come game time Blake was a serious asset to the team, especially in defence with his great technique, he did well taking down even the biggest boys in the comp. Kueva Lynch: Captain Kueva. He is the man, saving an abundance of tries with his roaming role in defence covering for the rest of the boys and still made a significant impact in attack, although his spark when running was handled more easily in the top division. Keep it up you good thing. Cameron Riley: Crazy Cam... The only kid to start a blue all season. Nice. Cam improved over the season; going over the sideline less and less, getting the ball out to his winger, strong running and holding his own in defence quite well (when the tackles were below the chin). Ta Cam Callum Whyte: Leech! At the top of the tackle count in every game he played. I think that playing and not being able to take as many hit ups sent Callum psycho... he just had to make as many tackles as physically possible or he may have needed to be committed. Cal’s service from hooker was great and his courage in defence definitely wasn’t in short supply. Thanks Cal! Christian Laidler: Christian improved a lot this year, playing the pivot role of half back he didn’t have much of a choice. The main things I asked Christian to improve were keeping his head up when he was making a tackle and moving forward onto the ball off Callum. He took that in and certainly did improve in these areas. Establishing a forward movement from Christian onward was important as the Div 1s get up a hell of a lot quicker in defence than the 2s did. Christian looked pretty comfortable at half by the end of the season. Good stuff Christian. Ryan Donovan: Donny’s strength in most aspects of the game increased drastically, from the way he ran onto the ball and kept powering even when there were defenders on him to the way he would take down most runners with ease. He’ll learn to love doing Malcolms someday. Josh Fuller: Josh is a bloody pocket rocket! His fitness and willingness to put his body on the line were truly astounding, especially for his size. Unfortunately I don’t think Josh got many opportunities to shine out on the wing this year, but he certainly proved that he is up to the challenge of the 1s, and his time to shine on the field will come. Noah Iverach: A natural talent, young Noah. An extremely receptive kid; Noah picked up everything that we asked of him throughout the season and did so with ease. Love your work. Keep it up Noah and not much’ll be able to stop you. William Macdonald: Great power. William was curiously somewhat shy in defence on game days, but it was obvious at training that he could hammer blokes who he was comfortable with, like his team-mates. However it was a different story when he was running onto the ball; he was definitely a hard boy to stop. Don’t hold back Will - you have heaps of potential.

43 Jack Titmuss: When he wasn’t on the ski slopes or injured, Jack made quite an impact on the field; running hard in attack and also pretty good in defence. Not so much tackling with his face this year which was good to see. Adam Mustow: Adam earned a position in our team this year by showing a good set of skills and plenty of strength. We tried him in a few different positions, seeking to get the best out of him, but against tough opposition we only really saw glimpses of his capability during the games.

Justin Hall and Michael Hanratty (A Grade) - 20 year players

We had 2 players this season who completed 20 years service with the Club.

Justin Hall started his career in the U8s way back in 1987. He played 15 consecutive years landing in A grade in 2001. He had a few years off before rejoining the A grade for 4 years between 2005 and 2008 and coming back for one last go this season. During his 20 years with the Club Justin won premierships in 1989, 1991, 1994, 2006 and his pride and joy, the 2008 A grade of which he was captain.

Michael Hanratty started his career in the U7s in 1992 and has just completed his 20th consecutive season with the Club in our A grade – a truly remarkable achievement amassing over 300 games!! In those 20 years he has won an unbelievable 9 premierships (1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008) to have a very enviable strike rate.

Both players are sons of Club life members, the epitome of great Club men and although they have already made huge contributions to the Club, it is hoped they come back to the Club in the near future to share their vast experience by coaching or training our younger players.

Well done Justin and Mick.

COACH’S REPORT

2011 was always going to be a tough year with the team moving up a Division. To the boys credit they were extremely competitive when they put their minds to it. The first half of the season was hard, losing the majority of our games, but by the second half we were able to play some good footy and have some good wins. Most memorable was the win against who finished second on the ladder. The boys definitely have the potential to find themselves in the finals next year if they come back and work hard.

Thanks to David and Paul for their support and the time they gave to help the boys. I have never met someone with the amount of energy and excitement that Dave possesses or the positive attitude of Paul. Thanks to all the parents for their help and support and to John Grealy and the committee for all they do to allow footy to be played.

Boys last of all you proved what you can do by beating Milperra; it’s just consistency that needs to improve to be in a grand final in the future. Hope you all come back next year.

MANAGER’S REPORT

Season 2011 proved a tough year for last year’s grand finalists having moved up to Division Two for this year’s competition and as a result saw the boys complete the season in sixth spot on the leader table. Though the team did manage to put in some promising and memorable performances

45 throughout the year, it was the boys’ lack of overall consistency that was to make or break the team’s effort in achieving a semi finals berth.

The potential in the side’s ability of making the finals did not start to appear until the back end of the season after a very slow start to the year. The beginning of the season found us in a rebuilding phase with a couple of last year’s boys deservingly moving up into the first side. We also gained a number of new boys who were not only joining the Club for the first time, but also enjoying their very first year and taste of what Rugby League Football is all about.

Again it was great to be involved with the boys’ development, courage and confidence throughout the year, together with the wonderful opportunity to experience some very promising talent, good wins and in particular some exciting games of football. The boys were able to string together some great wins and near losses and further their skills and abilities which will ensure next year’s competition will allow them to improve and perform even better.

The boys did eventually learn and discover that playing good football week in and week out is the key to success and more importantly how much more competitive the higher divisions are. Realising this makes the difference from being successful as opposed to ‘missing out’ come semi finals time. Obviously all of this does not come easy and is the result of everyone’s valuable time and hard work and so I would like to thank all those involved for putting this year’s side together week in and week out. A very special ‘Thank you’ to the following people:

To our Super Coach, Bryan Hannigan - your time, patience, optimism and weekly game plans were not only instrumental to all involved, but were also somewhat infectious to myself and I thank you greatly.

To our Head Trainer Paul Ellison - who not only has football blood running through his veins all year round, but is also a valuable asset to not only the boy’s well being, but also to all the parents and more importantly to myself, as I could not have done my job without you.

To all the parent helpers and volunteers each week that made my job a lot easier in helping out in the canteen, BBQ requirements and the touch judge and score keeping duties.

To the St Christopher’s Committee and Ground Officials that work tirelessly behind the scenes all year and every Game Day no matter what; and then some.

And last but not least - to all the boys. It was a pleasure to watch you go around each week and play with pride, competitiveness and more importantly fun and enjoyment. Again we all look forward to next year’s season for bigger and better things to come.

Mohamed Arnaout: Mohamed played well throughout the year and always stood out in both attack and defence. His ability to score tries and stop the opposition from scoring is something he does very well and is a great asset to the team’s attack and defence weekly game plans.

Christian Devnie: Christian proved a real difference to the side when he arrived at the Club for his very first year with the Saints. Having played football all his life and with his large physique, strong determination and 100% commitment saw him consistently receiving points each week towards the Best and Fairest award and providing the team’s X Factor whenever we played.

Ryan Dunn: Ryan’s efforts this year were very impressive and as a result his attack, defence and kicking game proved the positive difference in many of our games. He was positioned at fullback throughout the year and was not only able to attack well, but also defend well in stopping the opposition from scoring on many occasions. 46

Cooper Ellison: Cooper enjoyed another year of football and in particular the role of playmaker. As a result his ability as a confident playmaker improved each week which proved valuable in ensuring the team’s majority of set plays were completed. Cooper was also able to pull off a couple of clever things each week in attack and in particular our last tackle options.

Stephen Dowling: Stephen was a bit of a quiet achiever in his first year of football and surprised everyone with what he had to offer and more importantly what he could achieve. As he began to prove himself he stood out in some very tough matches and showed everyone what actual ability he has in being a very strong defender and hard running forward.

Hayden Flack: Little Hayden joined the team this year from soccer. His enthusiasm and effort to get in there, have a go and play well was definitely one of his strong points. Unfortunately he was away for a few matches and did not really get to fully experience what playing and learning about rugby league is all about. Although he is quite small in stature his big heart and enjoyment of playing the game should take him further.

Josh Hannigan: Josh had another outstanding year with both his attack and defence having a major impact. As he played in a type of cover defence and second attacking option role Josh set the standard for the rest of the team. He was able to go about his business with plenty of work and confidence which also rubbed off onto his team mates.

Luke Harford: Luke’s first year in rugby league saw him needing to learn and understand what playing rugby league is all about. When he did start to get a few games under his belt he always became involved, held onto the ball tight and learnt when it was his turn to get in there and help his team mates out.

Jayden Hayer: Jayden unfortunately missed a few games of football this year, but when he did play he managed to prove what a handful he was for the opposition. His ability to run hard and take on the other side’s opponents once again proved how capable he is at playing the game.

Aaron Karnold: Aaron again proved what ability he had to offer. When he was playing well he managed to keep scoring some very good tries. Growing a few centimetres taller this year saw him not only playing some very good football, but when he did play well to his ability, he would often stand out.

Patrick Kotsaris: Patrick was another first timer to rugby league and it was great to see his confidence, courage and commitment improve each week. As his experience grew towards the back end of the season he transformed into a very consistent and valuable contributing member of the team.

James McKenna: James played some very good games of footy this year and when he was playing ‘hot’ he was definitely hard to stop. His ability to make the long and hard metres was a huge benefit to the team in going forward. In doing this he was also able to pop up a few good balls in setting up the teams attack and scoring opportunities.

Kye Muscat: Kye enjoyed another consistent year of football and could again be relied upon to do his job week in and week out. His ability to be a threat when attacking with the ball, thanks to his killer sidestep, and assist his team mates in defence was a contributing factor to not only his own improvement, but also the team’s as well.

Joel Williams: Big Joel played some very good games of football this season. His several years of experience, hard running and the ability to pull off some clever things with the ball, in particular some great off loads, again showed everyone what damage and destruction he could cause to the opposition.

47 Michael Tanevski: Michael’s first year with the Club proved a great success. His strong defence in the middle of the ground and around the ruck area was always a contributing factor on how the side was going to perform each week. To have combined this with his own improvement was a real asset to the team’s overall performance throughout the entire season.

MANAGER’S REPORT

2011 was to be the tell tale sign of whether the boys had what it takes to compete with the rest of the competition. After coming off a turbulent season in 2010, there was uncertainty right from the word go. The boys finished second last the previous season and it was a tough decision, do we keep them in Div 1 or to send them to the lower grade, but after lengthy discussions with staff and committee members the call was made to leave them in Div 1, a decision which, later on, would prove to be right. With a new coach in Paul Fahd, trainers Glen Bradford, Morris Higham and Adam Linnegar, the team was determined to show they had the talent to take it to the best in the grade.

The boys showed dedication and enthusiasm in the first part of the season which would see them winning games convincingly and those that were lost were by narrow margins. The true test however was against the teams’ greatest nemesis “The Berala Bears”. They have intimidated our boys for years, and this game was to be no different, with them beating us in a mercy match in a total of 25 minutes. Well heads were hanging low and confidence started heading south again, but in true Saints’ spirit the boys turned up to training every week and worked on their discipline and skill levels to try and turn things around. They managed to pick up their momentum again notching up some terrific wins and even a draw against Sports. The 2nd meeting 49 between St Chrissies and the Bears would be different; the boys played the whole 40 mins and even held them scoreless for the first 18. Our attack was better, our defence was outstanding and the opposition started to panic. Although we did not win this match, it was a true indication that the boys had the skill to match it with the big guns.

By the end of the season the boys’ confidence had picked up and they were playing as a unit. Consistency seems to be an issue with the team, but the skill level is right up there with the best. The goal this year was to improve their placing on the competition ladder compared to last year and that was what they did. Proving they do deserve to be playing in the top grade. Both the coaching staff and the boys have taken a lot of positives from this season and it has been a great improvement on last year, and with a lot more dedication and hard work, they can only get better. So the future is promising, they have so much potential.

Thank you to Paul, Glen, Adam and Morris for the amount of voluntary hours you put in, I know it has not been easy, but we all appreciate it and the boys now know what it feels like to win again. A big thank you to all the parents who have helped with duties throughout the season, it has not gone unnoticed. And I would like to congratulate the boys on a great effort this season, we are all so proud of you and look forward to doing it all again next year. See you all then.

PLAYER PROFILES

Bodie Bradford: Bodie was our No.7 and was our go to man. He had a consistent season and as the year progressed he became more confident to take on the line, which resulted in some great plays.

Michael Fahd: Is our try scoring machine, with skill in both attack and defence, the opposition always new to watch out for the kid with the curly hair and the deadly palm. He played in the centres and tried his hand at fullback this year, no matter what position he was given he always gave it 100%.

Peter Rehayem: Our No.9, had a solid season this year. It was good to see the “tackling machine” back, strong and ruthless. He also played a bit in the centres and troubled the opposition with his quick plays of the ball. Always willing to put his body on the line no matter what. His versatility and dedication makes him a valuable part of the team.

Jaidin Obeid: Had a fantastic year, probably his best since joining the team 2 years ago. His speed and control of the ball was second to none, his discipline on and off the field was a coach’s dream. His role as fullback was where he stood out this year, with his great takes, and fast footwork he was trouble for the opposition. Also another one of the smallest in the team but his defence was outstanding.

Stuart Higham: One of our forwards who never gives up. He has a big heart and loves his football. His progress throughout the season was admirable. Not afraid of taking on the line, his size and determination would give the little boys the opportunities to play off him and cause the opposition a headache.

Jayden Khoury: Also had a good year, another one of our forwards who progressed well through the season. A real team player who learnt that with hard work you can get results on the field.

Ryan McGregor: A great kid who just loves to play footy. A versatile player with a big heart. When he brings his A game to the field, watch out. He is a free spirit on and off the field and popular amongst his peers. His confidence in taking on the line grew as his skill levels progressed. He is a valuable team member and brings great attacking options to the team. 50

Bradley Kilpatrick: One of the quiet achievers who has progressed in leaps and bounds this year. He has consistently shown his great capabilities on the footy field and has the ability to read the game well. His support play was outstanding this year.

Angelo Gauci: Started off slow this year, but by the end of the season he was a wrecking machine. He lifted his game when it was needed and took the ball up hard. His dedication to training and improving his game was outstanding. Never shying away from his responsibility or hard work made him an inspirational player.

Shaun Bailey: The man on the wing, gave it all he had. He started the season off strong, but after a few injuries and knocks, he found himself struggling for form. He loves his footy and his club and we know he will have a better season next year.

Lachlan Evans: One of the new kids on the block, quickly cemented his place in the team. With his quick pace and do or die attitude he was a force to be reckoned with on the wing. He learnt a lot in his first year and was a welcome addition to the team.

Dylan Chong Sun: Another new member to the team, Dylan showed his ability to be able to run the ball without any fear. Wearing the No.6 Jersey he settled in well and showed his versatility around the field.

Karim Saboune: Moved up from the lower division and gave the side some needed go forward. As the season went on his confidence grew and his tackling techniques were strong. For a quiet boy he sure knows how to have an impact on a game.

Byron Foster: Another member that was promoted from the lower division, Byron was a dedicated member of the team that always did what was required. A versatile and dedicated team member, whose support play was a valuable asset to the team.

Blake Linnegar: Also moved up from the Div 3 to join the team. He was our other wingman that settled in quite well. He was a dedicated player that was determined to learn as much as he could moving up to the higher grade.

COACH’S REPORT

It may seem weird but a big congratulations goes to the entire team for proving that winning is not the only indicator of a successful season. The team came together in mid February and for the first time in recent memory we had the full squad of 17 settled, ready and raring to go. One of the main aims for any coach is to get a team to gel as quickly as possible and it was a pleasure to watch as old mates became better mates whilst forming new friendships with the new players that arrived at the Club - This is where this team differs from a lot of others. The team ripped into training full of confidence and ready for a great season.

If the season was taken purely on results many would see it as a failure but the thing many don’t see is the effort of the entire team at training week in week out never once giving up on anything they were asked to do. These efforts at training were taken onto the field every Saturday and regardless of the score NEVER once did the team give up - the most pleasing aspect being that in every game the boys were seen to play some well structured footy which resulted in some great team tries. Again the team could have easily used the excuse that their opponents were just too BIG but the boys set about learning the skills that are needed to not only compete against these rivals but to become a smarter and better rugby league team laying the platform for next year’s graduation into International Rules and for years to come. 52

Probably the most pleasing part of the whole season was watching and listening to the entire team work together to become not just better rugby league players but better young men. A big thanks from myself and the boys goes to the team’s trainers Tim Reardon, Jason Nagle and Manager Paul Griffith whose help and support always goes unnoticed but is a big factor in the team’s success

Lastly, as a team we spoke about the “feeling” Rugby League gives us when things are going well and I am sure that if this team stays together and continues to work hard that feeling will be there for all to see and the rewards will come

Thanks boys

PLAYER PROFILES

Louis Amato: Louis was new to the team this year and was our go to man when we needed a hole to be filled. Louis is a forward but was more often than not used out wide and to his credit handled all situations very well. A very popular member of the team who improved dramatically as the season progressed.

Kieran Armson-Graham: Kieran played left centre this season with great results. Kieran formed great combinations with the entire left side of the field in attack resulting in many good team tries. Kieran also found some much needed confidence in defence and defended very well with his up and in your face attitude. Good season mate

Abdul Arnaout: Abs was another new member of the team and after a settling in period and a minor attitude change proceeded to show us the type of football he was capable of playing. A player who worked hard on all aspects of his game at training with the results there for all to see in the back half of the season. Good season Abs

Nathan Boland: Nathan was again the team’s go to man, whenever deep in trouble the team always needs a player to just get the ball and take one up to get the team going forward. These efforts are what every team is built on and this is what Nathan loves doing. A player who runs great lines in attack and is punishing in defence and it is usually after one of these efforts that the team benefits. Next year in the International rules Nathan will shine .

Jayden Contreras: J.J was another new addition to the team this year and from day one it was as though he had been part of this team for a long time. A young man with all the skills needed to go places in this game of ours. Playing in the forwards against some much bigger opponents “Juan” showed that attitude and dedication will always win in rugby league, an immensely popular member of the team who I hope will be around for many years to come.

Jeremy El-Chami: Jeremy played on the left wing this season and his game came on very well this year, forming great combinations with his centre partners which resulted in some great tries out wide, a tactic the team worked very hard on all year. Jeremy’s defensive efforts saw him moved into the forwards on many occasions, a task he loved and one he may have to get used to in years to come. Well done mate

Adam Griffith: Adam started the season at dummy half but then was moved into the role of a first receiver which to his credit saw his entire outlook on footy change. A good reader of the game and with an uncanny knack of being the first on to the loose ball Adam’s confidence grew to the point where it was great to watch him guide the team around the park playing to the team’s game plan. These skills along with some hard work are what are needed in every rugby league team. Well done ‘BOB’

53

Rhys Harrington: Played the season at lock this year and was going quite well until he was injured mid season. This injury not only affected Rhys but the team’s confidence and was a big reminder of why we as a team have to be a bit smarter and become more skilful than the larger opponents we face each week. To Rhys’ credit the confidence returned and he finished the year strongly.

Lachlan Honey: Lachlan was our dummy half this year and I thought his all round game improved well, constantly targeted in defence due to his small stature Lockie knew his technique had to change and set about doing that. It won’t happen overnight mate but with some hard work the results will come. Well done

Hayden Kennedy: Hayden had a good solid year and I think he realised what affect he has on this team. Being in the forwards he realised that when the team was going very well that it was usually on the back of his efforts, playing a little wider this year he was seen to do all the little things we do at training (elbows and knees, quick play the balls) and when all these are done well the entire team benefits. Good job mate

Liam Mannering: Liam was moved out to the right centre position this season and played very strongly all year. A fierce defender and a great talker on the field Liam was seen to form some good combinations with his receivers and link up with his outside men. Next year with some hard work and the new rules should see him make the centre position his for some time.

Anthony Maric: Antos was having a great year all round defending well and occasionally being moved into the middle of the field seemingly enjoying the higher work rate. Things were looking good following up from a great first year last season until a back injury cut his season short. The effect this had on the team was huge as Antos was always rock solid on the right side of the field. I hope mate that you can get this injury fixed and get back to footy ASAP as you are a very popular and vital part of this team.

Sammy Moussa: Sammy arrived this season from another club and a lower division and thought he would just take up from where he left off last year where he would score lots of tries just by being fast enough to run around lazy defences, but soon realised that the higher division meant that this wasn’t going to be quite so easy and that the coach wasn’t going to let him. Playing in the centres or as a wide running 2nd rower saw Sammy learn the art of running through the defences on the end of some great passes from his inside men. As well as the attack his confidence grew in defence and the improvement in his overall game was very evident. Well done mate.

Riley Nagle: Riley started the year on the wing but was soon moved into the lock position. This move was an attempt to get him to find the confidence he had lost over the last couple of seasons and to his credit he not only found it but now has a new outlook on the game. Riley like the rest of the team soon realised that the opposing teams are always going to be bigger than us so we set about devising ways of being smarter and better than our opponents, again these results aren’t going to happen overnight but with lots of hard work the results will come, trust me. Good season mate

Jonah Ngaronoa: Jonah was another new recruit this season and slotted into the role of the team’s fullback and early on in the season and had to do far more work in defence than the coach would have liked. A player with all the skills needed in the game Jonah seemed to enjoy his role of the link man when the team preformed a “Yellow” which only goes to show that all these plays that we played at oppositions during the season is evidence that you can compete against every team in the competition. A great defender with a smart pair of hands, the new international rules next year should see Jonah with more room to move. Well done.

Luke Reardon: Luke played first receiver the entire year and performed very well. Watching Luke guide the team around the field this year was pleasing in the fact he has found the 54 confidence and ability that is needed when the team plays the new International rules next year. The competition will not be any easier next year but with Luke’s attitude, work rate and ability to get this team headed in the right direction, all looks good for next year. Well done mate.

Jack Ryan: Jack was moved into the dummy half role this season and showed the importance of having a player smart enough to play by instinct. It was again a pleasure to watch Jack work with team mates and play some very smart football against our more fancied rivals. Jack was rewarded with representative honours mid season being selected for the PSSA NSW team and travelled to Melbourne to play. A very popular member of this team with all the skills needed to take this team into next year’s challenges of U13s International rules Rugby League.

Living in the past, Saints enter their first Rugby League Masters tournament at Runaway Bay.

COACH’S REPORT

Well another year gone by. The football seasons just seem to be going faster and faster! As this season officially draws to a close, I remember all the hard work that everyone put into making this year a success!

Firstly I would like to thank the club and all the committee for the work they put in week-in, week-out because without them there is no football. I would also like to thank the parents for their continual hard work and support that makes my job so much easier. Then I also cannot forget my managerial team of Nat and Kirsten who keep this team running like a clock, with great organisational skills and support. Also the several dads who put their hands up and got their trainer’s certificate and helped out the boys immensely. Thanks Steve, Damian, Lee and John, cheers boys.

Finally to the boys who played this year. It was a rollercoaster of a year with our first game against one of the toughest teams of the competition, which really shocked some of the boys and welcomed them to international football. We were competitive in halves this year, with only rarely stringing together a whole game. With some of the top teams we would stick with them for the first half or beat them in the second but we could never string together a whole game. But this was not due to lack of trying, the boys were faced with injuries throughout the year and were constantly playing a man down or with no reserves. So to all those boys who turned up week- in, week-out I take my hat off to you for your hard efforts.

56 It was another fun year for me and even though our success may not have been seen on the field it was seen in individual improvements, a great team attitude and an overall fun year. Thanks for the year everyone and I hope to see you all around in the 2012 season. Cheers!!

MANAGER’S REPORT

As a combined effort this year we have both enjoyed the privilege of managing the boys in 2011. This season was the beginning of International league for the boys. We started the season with 18 players on the field. Six of these were new players to the club. The boys stepped up to the tough challenge ahead, but struggled throughout the season with a lack of reserves.

Working together with the parents we ensured that the boys ran on each week and gave their all. We thank the parents for their support in helping out when needed in the canteen, BBQ and running lines and doing timesheets.

A special thanks to Mette and John with their constant efforts in ensuring that some of the boys were picked up and made it to the games and training each week.

To our trainers Steve and Damian, we thank you for giving of your time to be at the games supporting Poppy and the boys on the field and also for keeping them in line at training and also to John - thanks for giving your time when needed on game day and at training.

To Poppy - Your tireless effort each week at training and games is much appreciated by the Boys, Parents and the Managers. Your patience and determination to keep the boys focused throughout the season was admirable, dealing with the many challenges that you were presented with each week. We wish you the best of luck with whatever decision you make for 2012.

To The BOYS!!! Last but not least. Thank you for your commitment and drive throughout the season. You endured a tough year but you always ran on with heads held high. You didn’t give up fighting to the last round. You should be proud of your commitment and persistence all year. We look forward to new challenges in 2012.

Finally a BIG THANKYOU to the Club, the Committee and the Sponsors for allowing our boys to follow their passion of football. Without you guys it wouldn’t happen.

Thanks all for a great season. We look forward to doing it all again in 2012.

PLAYER PROFILES

Paul Kitiona: Paul made the move from centres to the fullback position this year and he took it in his stride. Paul displayed some aggressive running on kick returns and some great cover defence, when the opposition broke though our defences. Paul is only going to continue to improve and with some confidence in his abilities he will develop into a natural player.

Brandon Cushway: Cush had another solid year in the backs. He displayed that when he puts his mind to it, what he can do even surprises himself. Cush just needs to back his speed and his abilities more often and he will continue to improve out of sight.

Christian Patti: Patti was another solid aspect of our backline this year. Patti always turns up with an enthusiastic attitude at training and game day, but just needs to be more confident in his abilities and we will continue to see him improve.

57 Jayden Willick: Jayden joined the team a little way into the season but showed straight away that he had what it takes to match it with the bigger boys. Jayden moved around and filled in a lot of positions in the team and never really got a chance to settle in but he still played to the best of his ability and always showed up ready to play.

Mitchell Bailey: Bails was another new recruit to the team and slotted straight into the backline. Mitch is always enthusiastic at training and gives 110% on game day and does whatever he is asked to do. Bails showed that he was a hard man in defence and a key weapon in attack. If he keeps up the hard work Bails will only improve in the future.

Mitchell Wilson: Sniggs resumed his spot as 5/8 and of the three years that I have coached him, this was by far his standout. Mitch showed that he is made of the strong stuff, with his tough defence and his willingness to take the line on, Sniggs is transforming into a top class footy player.

Brandon Donovan: Dono had another solid year at half back and displayed why he was selected in the grade side the previous year. Dono was captain this year and he led by example with his strong defence and leadership around the park. To further improve his game Dono needs to back himself more and take the line on, but it was another solid year by Dono.

Tui Manoa: Tui was one of the leaders of the team this year. He led with his attitude at training and the keenness he showed on every single game day. Even when injured, Tui was always ready to put himself first in front of the team. Tui’s biggest improvement this year was his work rate especially in defence, with no one getting through him.

Ben Titmuss: Benny had a bit of a stop and start year, with injuries and sickness. But when on the field Ben always gave his best for the team with his strong charges forward and solid defence up the middle, Ben was a great asset to the team.

Tommy Ward: Tommy went back to dummy half this year and he continued his great form from last season into this season. Tommy has got some excellent balls skill and is a natural attacking weapon, but he is another player who needs to back himself and trust in his abilities. Tommy was always there too when the opposition broke the defensive line in cover and never stopped working.

Jarrad Bryant: Jazza had another strong year in the forwards and has improved out of sight since I first took over the team. Jazza trains hard and plays harder. Jazza doesn’t realise how destructive and strong he can be. But I can only see further improvements in the future for Jazz and the more he applies himself the more he will continue to improve.

Sean Faanoi: Sean’s season was punctuated with injuries and dilemmas but when he was able to play he was a key aspect of the team. Sean has a great tackling technique that can take down any opponent but he just needs to remember it and stay away from the shoulder charges! But when Sean gets fired up he is a force to be reckoned with.

Marcus Guzman: Guzzy was another new player to the team this year and he showed from his very first game how destructive he can be. Guzzy is a silent achiever, you don’t have to ask him to do things he just does them. Guzzy is a destructive attacking and defending weapon that I can only see improving in the years to come.

Adam Alameddine: Adam was another new recruit to the side this year and proved that he could play many positions, from second- row to the halves, displaying a great little kicking and passing game. Adam had an unexpected injury halfway through the year which punctured his progress. But to his credit Adam returned in full force and back to his best by the end of the season.

58 Kristopher Iverach: Kris also joined us late in the season but cemented his spot straight away with his hard, defence crushing runs and body on the line tackles. Kris was also unlucky to suffer from a batch of injuries throughout the season which hindered his progress. If Kris keeps up his determination and attitude he will prosper into a great player.

Joey Milliss: This was Joey’s first year of rugby league and what he lacked in knowledge of the game, he made up for in enthusiasm and eagerness to prove himself. Joey shows no fear against any opponent and is one tough person. Joey just needs to ensure that he makes sure that he works on his technique to prevent injury and continue his improvement.

Brendan Lam Sam: Rambo had another solid year playing in between positions of forwards and centres. Rambo constantly put his body on the line for the team and this is how he sustained a nasty injury to his wrist. Rambo runs with no fear against people twice the size of him.

COACH’S REPORT

A transition year for these boys as U13 is the first year of International rules football. New rules, new positions and also a whole new coaching staff implementing new plays, defensive structures and game plan. U13s is about player development and I hope all players have learnt something about “big time” football and the role of different positions on the football field.

Those players who continue long term will be thankful that they play in such a tough competition. There are no easy games with every team possessing a number of good skilful players. When we put it together I strongly believe that we were the best and most skilful team in the competition. Ultimately these good performances were followed by poor performances that resulted in losses to teams that were well beatable. We underperformed this whole season limping into the semi- finals and were beaten straight up by a gallant Moorebank team.

I thank all involved and there were many positives that came out of the season. Scott Hannigan, Steele Brown and Luke Aanakin playing representative football for the Canterbury Bulldogs. The coaching and training debuts of Benny Barrett and Graeme “Fart” McFarlane were outstanding. They both did a great job in a tough environment and the Club should secure their services in future years. They have a lot to offer these kids both on and off the field. Amanda Thompson and Linda Dravett as Managers were instrumental and both did a lot of work behind the scenes. Numerous parents that helped out on the BBQ, running the line, sitting at the desk, running raffles and of course the ball boys and girls. To the players, I thank you for your efforts this year. See you next season

60 PLAYER PROFILES

Tom Swiderski: Second Row. Another solid year from Big Tom. Always gives his best in supporting the forwards. Runs hard whenever he has the footy. Would like to see a bit more aggression next season, we know you have it you Tom.

Aseri Raikalevu: Wing. Zipper always has a top season and this was no different. One of the smaller players, but full of heart. Zips down the sideline past many opposition players to dart over the try line.

Adam Ayshan: Fullback. Slippery player who when gets hold of the ball is capable of stepping the opposition halfway up the paddock, sometimes further. Team player who always gives 100%.

Posesione Lynch: Centre/Wing. Another small player but again proved he has a huge heart. Will tackle the big boys with no fear and in turn run at them just as fearlessly. Little pocket rocket who is an exceptional trainer.

Steele Brown: Captain and 5/8, Goalkicker. Team veteran who has just completed his 9th season with the Club. Always leads his team with pride, determination and motivation. Can kick, pass and tackle with the best of them, hence his selection into the 2011 Canterbury Bulldogs Development Squad. Well done Steele.

Damien Rowles: Second Row. Another player who is always there to support the forwards. Guaranteed to give a solid run any time he is in possession of the ball. A team player who always shows enthusiasm and strength.

Joshua Thompson-Reynolds: Centre/Wing/Fullback. Another long-term player also completing his 9th season. Also not scared to tackle the big boys and when in possession of the ball down the sideline, can be very dangerous. Good talker out on the paddock.

Devante Faanoi: Front Row. Another team veteran who is often feared by the opposition. Being one of the big boys, he is not scared by any player, no matter how big. Can always be relied on to carry the ball over the try line when the opposition are up in our face.

Brendon Dravet: Wing/Centre. A newcomer to our team this year as he progressed from Division 2, and what a selection he was. Always played with strength and eagerness and proved throughout the season that he has got what it takes to be one of the best. His amazing ability to tackle around the legs and make players drop to the ground stunned coaching staff and spectators alike.

Dyllan Ott: Wing/Centre. Also a newcomer to the team this year and new to our Club. Proved that he has the footy blood in him and slotted straight into the team. Can run hard and tackle well and even scored a couple of tries. Great first season Dyllan, look forward to seeing you again next year.

Ben Lewis: Halfback. Yet another new player who joined us from the Cronulla Competition. Ben fitted in perfectly as halfback. He proved without even knowing a single team mate that he is more than capable of leading them around the park. Only small, but still fierce, Ben made many a good offload, helping his team mates over the try line.

Fatu Togagae: Forward. One of the best forwards in the Competition. Can palm off opposition players and throw dummys like no other. Always guaranteed to run hard and push his way through many a player. Scored plenty of tries this season and can we only look forward to his return next year.

61 Luke Annakin: Lock. Another player whose talent is up there with the best of them. Luke gave his all and more every single match. His amazing running and tacking ability always had the opposition fearful. A high point scorer this season, Luke scored some great length of the field tries. Luke was also selected this year to represent the Canterbury Bulldogs U13s Development Squad. A wonderful season, well done Luke.

Scott Hannigan: Centre/Lock. Star player best sums up Scott’s season. He ran out onto the field every week and gave 150%. Constantly producing try saving tackles, supporting his team mates and most importantly, NEVER GIVING UP – It is no wonder Scott was an easy selection for the U13s Canterbury Bulldogs Development Squad. Fantastic season Scott, Congratulations.

Anthony Harb: Forward. Big Harbs, our Gentle Giant. This was his first year playing in the 1st grade team and he sure had a lot to offer. His constant support of the other forwards and some great off –loads throughout the year led to some strong tries by the boys. Confidence is the key Harbs, we know you can do it and can’t wait to see what you will show us next year.

Luke Parmaxidis: Wing/Centre/Forward. A versatile player with plenty of pace. Only his 2nd year with our team, Luke has no problem mixing it up with the big boys. He proved this during the season when he stepped up to a forward position and made plenty of breaks. Another one who has some hidden talent to show us in the coming seasons.

Mataele Taufu: A late season signing who only played a couple of games. We hope to see him fulfil his potential with a full season next year.

COACH’S REPORT

What a difference a year makes. Following the success of last year I was confident at the season’s start that we would again be competitive this year. We lost two players in the off season and gained two in the pre-season. We opened round 1 with a rematch of last year’s GF, beating Greenacre again.

Unfortunately during that game and over the next few months we were hit with a run of injuries, broken bones, ruptured ligaments and various sprains that dogged most if not all players for a large part of the season. This disrupted my plans in terms of what I wanted to teach this season, instead each week was spent rehabbing players and moving them out of position to cover for injuries whilst trying to get numbers for next week’s game.

To the boys credit they battled on. While the training staff bemoaned our luck the boys just went about their business. Training was always fun and the boys just loved being together, on the training paddock and both on and off the field. This year they taught me to keep things in perspective.

Towards the end of the season the injury gods left us alone and we snuck into the semis after winning a 4th place mid week play off. This year teams 2, 3, 4 and 5 all finished the season separated by only 2 competition points. For our final game of the year we were actually at full strength for the first time since round one. Unfortunately we stumbled at the final hurdle going down to the Dragons, unable to kick a goal in our last match.

I would like to thank the parents for their support, getting the boys to training and the game on time each week is difficult, let alone the extras I called during the year on weekends, thanks also 63 to the parents who did BBQ and Canteen duty, much appreciated. My thanks to Donna for time keeping on game day each week, to Dave H for his invaluable medical skills this year and for all his off field help. Thanks to the training staff for their patience, dedication and their game day roles – thanks Tony and Kirk, you did well to keep them up all year. My thanks to the greatest fence runner of all time, Peter Finch, excellent job as Team Manager and Club stalwart.

Lastly I would like to thank the boys, you’re a great bunch of blokes and we love being around you all. You’re a pleasure to train, and a treat to watch perform on the field each weekend, and given everything that happened this year you all stuck together and gave it your best shot each week. The mateship you displayed this year is what it’s really all about, thank you for reminding me.

PLAYER PROFILES

Adam Sader: Ad’s worked hard this year, injuries to our forwards forced him into the front line in defense where he more than held his own against much larger opposition. A good trainer and team player Adam guided the team round the park very well this year. Well done.

Andrew Zoghbi: Didn’t suffer the second year blips and performed well on the wing all year pulling off some memorable try saving tackles and swallowing plenty of bombs cleanly. Do some extra sprint work in the off-season mate.

Aidan Harrington: A very good year for Aidan, the penny dropped and in school football and Saints footy he improved out of sight, taking on the forwards’ leadership role early and setting a good example. Was also an excellent team captain when we needed a replacement one. Thanks mate a good year, make sure you build on it.

Brandan Sua: The thing about Brandan is the team relies on him, when he fires the team fires. Injuries in the early part of the season limited his performance but by season end he had ramped up to his devastating best, I can clearly remember him cleaning up Simon from Cheso when he captained the team in the playoffs, well done and congratulations on being selected for the Bulldogs again this year.

Conor Kelley: Another of our smaller players with a big heart. Conor was shifted all year long to cover our injuries and did not complain once, he just got on with the job and did it well each week. Does need to learn to dance like his mother though.

Conor Davidson: Well what can I say about a kid that can pull his own foot off while doing yoga. Davo suffered several injuries this year that kept him off the paddock for a long time. Still, he never missed training and although he was hurting inside he still performed admirably as the team’s captain, constantly motivating the boys. I’m already looking forward to having him back next year.

Dean Stimpson: Broken leg round 1. What else can I say. Losing Dean so early set the tone for the whole season, both in terms of what injuries cost us this year, and in terms of how these boys stick together whatever happens. Had an immediate impact when he came back and gave his all. Thanks mate.

Dylan Elias: One of the few players to play every game this year, and played plenty of matches without being interchanged. Gave everything he had for the team each week, an underrated player who built on last year’s performances with a very consistent season, thanks mate.

Jack Finch: Played hooker again this year and played it well. Another of the smaller boys who punched above their weight this year Jack gave very good service out of dummy half and combined well with Ads and Liam in guiding the team around the field, well done mate. 64

Jayden Okunbor: Second season with the Club and now comfortable with his surroundings, Jayden had a good year. Although he too suffered from injury he still managed to save our bacon on more than one occasion and get us the points. A pleasure to train and coach Jayden also lifts the boys when they need it, on and off the field. Congratulations also on selection for the Bulldogs again.

Kayne Grove: Broke his foot in the pre-season playing basketball, but was able to rejoin the team when we needed him most. Took a while to find his form but by season’s end was playing very good footy. His decision to come back when injuries had decimated the team personifies the mateship that exists within the team, thanks mate.

Kyle Lloyd: Just loves his footy and being with his mates. Trained well this season and it showed on the field with some good performances, especially in defence. Keep up the good work mate, your day is not far off.

Liam Mulvihill: Another good season for this bloke, barked well all year and was punishing in defence – especially when shifted into the frontline near the end of the season, also got our attack going at the back end of the season, another of the team’s good trainers and a guy that gives his all week in week out. Well done mate.

Nathan Nicholas: Joined us from the Colts this year and fitted in straight away with the boys. Because of our injury toll he was moved around into different positions all year and handled it well especially considering he was learning about the different intensity each week that div 1 offers over div 2. A handy addition and a good bloke, I’m looking forward to being able to find him a permanent position next year.

Nathan Harrison: Injured early Nathan took quite a while to find his best form but tried his hardest week in and week out. You sometimes take the quiet ones for granted, the work that Nathan, Aidan, Jack and Dylan do in the middle each week is the backbone of our success, well done mate and I’m looking forward to next year already as I think you are just hitting your straps.

Paikea Hunga Hunga: What a bonus gaining Paikea was this year. Fresh from NZ he had no trouble fitting into the culture of the team and by season’s end was just as much a smart arse as the rest of them. A player with plenty of natural ability he only needs to work on his fitness a bit more. Myself and the rest of the team hope he can join us again next year as his contribution up front was terrific.

Toby Reardon: We have several boys in the team that have always been smaller than their opposition, and for a while longer may stay that way. But that doesn’t reflect the size of their heart, and there is no bigger than Toby’s. A great trainer, team player and all round good guy, Toby, like the other smaller blokes, just gives his all week in and week out. I truly pity the opposition the day when this bloke fills out.

MANAGER’S REPORT

We’re always taught that if you haven’t got anything nice to say about someone, you shouldn’t say anything. If I follow that teaching, this would be a very short report! However, having watched this side for a number of years and trying to stay positive in these annual reports, that time has expired and it’s time a few home truths were revealed.

Numbers at the start of the season were solid, there was never any doubt we would form a side. We registered 22 but lost 1 MIA, 1 with family issues and 1 (Pierce) to a season ending injury sustained in the last trial. Although we had four U15s in the team we were quite prepared for our run in Division 2 of the ICCC - a year in Div 2 would suit us to get a bit of confidence back after being constantly smashed in Div 1 since U12s. Unfortunately the ICCC did not form 3 divisions as originally advertised and reshuffled us back to Div 1! Well the boys dropped their bundle big time and 2 weeks of pain followed as we got smashed by Hurstville and Earlwood – not because they were so much better than us, we just played like we didn’t want to be there.

Sanity prevailed and we got regraded into Div 2. Then our players’ “big brains” kicked in and they thought it would be a walk in the park!! Results - 2 losses to sides that were embarrassments to the code. 2 losses that would ultimately cost us a place in the semis – not that we truly deserved to be there. Another loss to Greenacre and we had reached the lowest of the lows – last in Div 2. An ‘airing of grievances’ followed which resulted in some ‘pride restoration’ with a win over East Hills.

A 5 week period followed with 3 further wins featuring a disciplined 2nd half display against the then 2nd placed Brighton. I say ‘disciplined 2nd half’ because we’d already had 1 in the bin and 1 sent off in the first half!! In hindsight, it was probably just lucky that Brighton were dumber than us. With 4 wins now under their belt, many in the team believed they now didn’t need to train so our maximum numbers at training went from 14 on good nights to 8 or 9 – please see start of 66 report for actual numbers registered!!!!!!! This saw us turn up to play the undefeated leaders Arncliffe with only 13 players. A gutsy effort followed and although we lost 30-8 we saw enough to think we might have turned the corner – if we could get them to train.

We had to beat Dundas who were now sitting in 2nd to stay alive. We stuck to the game plan and played disciplined football for probably our best display of the season. Result – we absolutely ambushed and smoked them 40-6. Had we found the key?? No, unfortunately that was the last time we played that successful style of football.

In the game we had to win to ensure a spot in the semis (against Holy Cross Ryde), we decided to go back to our old style of not following the game plan, giving away as many stupid penalties as we could, going for miracle balls on the 2nd tackle, running forwards at the line for 5 tackles when the backs are lined out, trying to score from dummy half when the backs are lined out, etc etc. Result – we lost 11-10 and the season was effectively over. A bye followed, then a ‘dead rubber’ last game against Regents Park which was an embarrassment to the Club

Dumb, un-disciplined displays were the order of the day for this team. Poor numbers at training resulted in un-fit players who had no idea of the game plan and with no intention of sticking to it even if they did know it. Interesting stat - every game we lost, we lost the penalty count. Every game we won, we won the penalty count. To those handful of players that did train, did get fit, didn’t get sent off or sin binned, didn’t give away stupid penalties and did follow the game plan, I apologise - you deserved better. For those that didn’t, you really need to think whether you want to play rugby league.

We must thank Macca (Coach) and Cookie (Head trainer) for the time they put into this lot. I’m sure the anguish, frustration and blood pressure problems outweighed the enjoyment, but they never gave up in trying to instil a winning formula into the boys. Thanks also to Justin Colquhoun (trainer) and Dave Muscat (first aid) who gave up their time on the weekend to help the team.

It’s sounds like a stupid statement after reading the above, but this was the closest many of these boys will ever get to winning a comp. Some commitment to training, the team and each other and a lot more discipline on the field and we would have easily won this comp but, as my dad always said, “You can’t put brains in statues!”

PLAYER PROFILES

Robert Smith: Robbie possesses a lot of natural talent and could score a try from anywhere but unfortunately due to work commitments and holidays was unable to make many training sessions and missed many games.

Paul Mansour: Paul came into the season a lot fitter and was always there to put his hand up to take the ball up. Paul injured his knee mid season and was sorely missed but came back for the last few games.

Marika Raikalevu: Marika got himself a lot more involved this year and was forced up to the front row. He made plenty of ground with the ball and always worked in defense for a great all round effort and his best year.

Jordan Sleiman: Jordan cemented the fullback position this year and was one of our most consistent performers all year. Jordan’s attack play out wide was first class and his support play was also a feature of his game.

Josh Sika: Josh came to the team late but he really picked up the plays and became very safe on the wing for us with some hard defense and was faultless under the high ball.

67 Blake Tonna-Riley: Blake is a very talented player who can handle any position in the backline but as the year went on we saw Blake less at training which effected his game and the team’s.

Ben Samuel: Ben grew in confidence this year being more prepared to take the line on and worked on his defense. Ben gave the team direction out on the field and was had a great attitude at training.

Nathan Henderson: Hendo moved between lock and 5/8 this year and really took his running game to another level. The backline always looked flash while he was at 5/8 but unfortunately a broken thumb finished Nathan’s season early and I’m sure we would have gone further if he was still playing.

Jimmy Theocharous: Jimmy always played with his heart on his sleeve wanting to get involved in every play. Jimmy just needs to play more to the plan and not get caught up in the emotion of the game.

Trev Faanoi: Big Trev was always willing to take the ball up and we gained a lot of momentum off his runs. His fitness let him down at the start of the year missing a number of training runs but he was playing at his best by the end of the season when he’d run into match fitness.

Kirk Oustambasidis: Kirk was our rock in the forwards. He was strong in defense and gave good service from dummy half which saw him sneak over for a couple of tries from there as well.

Tom Grealy: Tom was our captian and led from the front in each game. He had the ability to make line breaks with good hole running while his defense was always solid.

Ray Ranawaka: This was Ray’s first year of football and he cemented down the right side wing spot. All though not big Ray was able to bring down much bigger players with his tackling but needs to learn that he doesn’t have to run over his opposite number.

Jake Jennings: Jake showed up to all the training sessions and was getting stronger each game but as luck would have it, he fractured his wrist mid season and missed the remainder of the year.

Chris Dravet: Chris showed improvement each game and became an important member to the side. He timed his runs well to hit the advantage line but just needs more confidence in himself and to not get down about any mistakes that may happen.

David Pati: Dave had a lot of impact in a game and was able to pull off some big hits. Unfortunately Dave missed some early games which gave him a late start and he didn’t always have his head in the game.

Josh Quin: Quinny was making a comeback and had to cover a lot of positions. He has a good passing game and was also able to run a good hole. Another one that trained hard all year which really saw his game improve by the end of the year.

Kon Koutroumpas: Kon came late in the year and to make it harder, was also new to rugby league. To his credit he showed a great willingness to learn and will go better with more experience under his belt.

Matt Taavao: Matt returned to the team this year and always went hard but could have been so much more of an asset to the team if he came to training more regularly.

Pierce Bolger: Pierce hurt himself in the trials when showing a lot of promise and was out for the year but showed he was a great team player by showing up to training and the games for the rest of the year.

COACH’S REPORT

At the end of season 2010, the U17s suffered a bitter 16-12 grand final loss to Bankstown Sports. At the beginning of season 2011, for 4-5 weeks of pre-season training I had a consistent 6 or 7 players turn up to both sessions. Deep down I knew we would scrape a team together but I was unsure if I wanted to go through a season, struggling week to week for players to field a team. Anyone who has coached before knows it takes up quite a bit of your time so I had a decision to make. I believed I had made my decision but decided to give it one more week just to make sure. What a difference one week made!

Season 2011 we registered 23 players, one of which dropped out early on leaving us with 22. Of these 22, 6 were eligible to play in the U17s and the rest apart from 3 were playing a year above their age due to the combined age group of 18s and 19s. So I decided to get the boys together and tell them a little something about being part of, not just a team, but this team, of which the core group of players have been together since they were 6 years old. I put together a few pages but the following was what I wanted the boys to focus on:-

 Teams become great teams when they decide to do it for themselves, not because the coach, manager, trainer or even spectator says. Something or someone may inspire an individual but ultimately the team decides.  To become a great team it has to be decided together. When the team says ‘Ok, we can do this, we can make the difference. We will be the best at what we do, we have each other’s back no matter what and we will succeed - For us, for the team!’ It is then that a team starts to move mountains.

I also handed out in this package a series of quotes said by famous sports stars. I asked the boys to pick one, keep it to themselves and use it as motivation for the season. We also decided that our team quote for the year was to be ‘no excuses’. 69

Along with the above our main focus for training and game day was defence. Once again this year we lowered our average points per game against to 9.1! With a defensive record like that any team would be very hard to beat.

Since that night back in April we had some rough patches, but I believe this team knew all season, that on 4 September, we would hold up that trophy in front of a sea of maroon and gold supporters at Hammondville Oval. That belief led this team all the way to that day and they can now proudly call themselves the ICCC U19 Premiers for 2011 – the best in Sydney! I never doubted you boys!

I would also like to say to be given the opportunity 4 years ago to be part of this side, and then 2 years ago to become the Coach is an absolute privilege. This group of young men (not much younger than myself) are some of the best blokes I know. To be given the respect they have given me as a young coach, I can’t say ‘thank you’ enough. To all the parents, these boys are a credit to you and how they have been brought up. I will never forget this season and this team.

Finally I would like to thank the coaching staff, Stumpy, one of my closest friends who has been an integral part of the past two years; Killer and Simmo who did all the work behind the scenes in regards to managerial things; Paul and Justin Colquhoun for looking after the boys on game day and getting my messages out to them and to Anne Simpson, the best timekeeper in the business. All of these people will always be part of something very special and very close to my heart. Thank you and KNOCK KNOCK!!

ASSISTANT COACH’S REPORT

Well what a season it was!! The year started a bit slowly with only 6-8 players at training for the first 4-6 weeks of pre-season and things were looking pretty bleak for the boys. But they stuck together in this tough period, recruited a few new players, our rep players came back and all of a sudden the season started to take shape and the mighty saints were back on track.

The year would eventually end with the boys taking out the premiership after clearly being the most dominant team all year. It is not only a credit to the boys’ ability on the field that they succeeded but their mate ship and camaraderie off the field were the foundations for getting through the tough matches and I believe the main reason for our success as a football team. This is a team of immense talent, easily the most talented team I have ever been involved in. In saying that, what made it a greater privilege and pleasure to be associated with these boys is the fact they were humble, not only in defeat but also in victory - the sign of true champions. And ‘champions’ is an accolade these boys earned and truly deserve to be called.

One of the things that really took me was the efforts of Daniel Wagstaff. Being of such a young age himself and the way he applied himself to ensuring this team was successful is an absolute testament to the character, loyalty and passion of this guy - it truly was an honour not only to be able to assist a person who I think has all the potential in the world as a coach in the future but to be able to stand there every game next to one of my best mates and win the premiership after all the hard work I know he had put in, is nothing short of fantastic.

I can’t also sell short the efforts of Simmo, Killer, Paul and Justin - these guys were all instrumental in their own way to the success of the team and without them I strongly believe this team wouldn’t have been the same and I must thank them graciously for all their efforts which made my life a lot easier.

Personally for me it has been an amazing year and experience. Being only 2 years older than most of the boys it was challenging trying to take on a role of guidance and responsibility but one that I relished. I believe that these boys are not only now a team I was involved with but some of my 70 good mates and it definitely feels good to know there’s always the Saints’ family there to be and feel a part of. I wouldn’t change the course of this season for any other experience and it was a privilege and honour to be involved for which I will be forever grateful.

PLAYER PROFILES

Jeremy Fuller: What can i say about this kid? Played last year a year above his age and was outstanding. Played this year 2 years above his age and was even better. His attitude and maturity on the field, at training and on game day is what every coach dreams of. On a trip to Yass early in the year for a touch footy carnival I asked Jeremy what it would mean to him to captain this side. He was speechless to be even thought of like that. I knew Jeremy was the man to replace Browny and for a kid playing in a team where everyone is at least a year older if not two and to show his leadership is amazing. The team referred to him as “big bad”! Great year eetsy! This year was your year.

Adam Darwich: Last year Adam received the best back award on presentation day. This year he continued his form and was appointed co-captain with Jeremy. About half way through the season I decided that I needed Adam to concentrate on his footy. He has the credentials to be a great captain but sometimes his temper can get the better of him. At our mid season presentation he was awarded the ‘biggest bark, smallest bite’ award for that reason. Adam played every minute of every game this season and was fantastic to watch and a pleasure to coach once again.

Taylor Brown: At the end of last year I received some news that, to his credit, Taylor asked to deliver to me himself. It was bitter sweet. Taylor had made the St George SG Ball team, which meant I would be without my number one front rower this year. Fortunately his plea to St George to let him come back to the Club he loves was allowed and the boys couldn’t have been happier to have him back. Was very close to receiving the ‘Man of the match’ in the grand final and has been training with the St George high performance unit this season. A bright future lay ahead for this kid if he stays focussed.

Larry Taylor: Larry is another of our team members playing 2 years above his age and I think that in itself is an outstanding feat. After a year or two absence in the blue of East Hills he returned this year to the best Club and a great team and he brought a great attitude. Good on ya lazz!

David Minute: Did not see much of Minute during the year due to U20 commitments but when we had him he was an absolute menace to whoever we were playing that week. Built low to the ground and with strong leg drive he is very hard to tackle. Has a great sense of humour and provided quite a few laughs during the season. Another player to watch out for in the future if he stays focussed.

Wilson Faanoi: Wils loves this Club, and this team. With football almost all year round due to rep commitments you would understand him being burnt out, which at a few times during the season he told me he was. But one thing he always said when we had our talks was that he still loves playing with the boys at Saints. This team is like a family and the family sees Wils as a big brother which he is. Plays hard every time and caused plenty of damage to opposing teams this year. An outstanding talent with a big future in footy.

Daniel Stone: Man of the match in the grand final!!!! Stoney you were unfortunate to have 2 broken collar bones last year and only play 2 games. This year you didn’t miss a game and without your organization and direction in the number 7 this year I think a few games could have turned out different. In the grand final everything you did was near perfect and it just goes to show how hard you worked this season.

71 Dwayne Brown: Dwayne has an enormous amount of natural ability. Easily the quickest in the team, great ball skills and I can’t recall him dropping a ball at fullback this season. Occasionally loves a flick pass or one step too many but that’s what makes Dwayne who he is. Great season mate, stay focussed on your footy and you will go places. Made it very hard to pick the best back.

Jarrad Woods: Woodsy joined us this season and I knew straight away he would be a great addition to our forwards. Being the smallest team in the comp for most of their footballing lives Woodsy added some much needed size and strength. Trained hard, played hard and showed his versatility when moved into the centres for a few games and scored some great tries. Earned a starting spot in the grand final for his hard work.

Matt Grealy: Greals loves this Club. He bleeds maroon and gold and he proved it from day one. Lacking fitness in pre-season he never gave up once in the gruelling sessions at the beginning of the year and come round one, he really surprised me with his mobility. As we moved further into the season we worked out Greals was best used in spurts and when he was out there he ran hard and more importantly his defence was rock solid.

Luke Vella: The best natural footballer I have ever come across! I don’t think I need to say much more about his ability, but LV came to this team and brought an infectious attitude to training and game day that the boys looked for in tough times. Another player eligible to play U17s and I don’t think he played a bad game all season. Watch out for this kid in years to come.

Billal Habib: Billy, the kid with 1000 nicknames. Sinbad joined this team and the world of rugby league last season and I think he epitomises what footy at St Christopher’s is about. Never gives any excuses, turns up week in week out to training and game day (has only missed 3 sessions in 2 years) and I have seen a huge improvement in his ability, especially his defence towards the end of the season. Well done Kebab!

Diamond Charlie: I had heard a lot about Dee pre-season and got to watch a few of his games for SG Ball and I was impressed. Initially we were unsure if we would have him join our team but from the day he did, we never looked back. His work rate is enormous and the boys made plenty of breaks through Diamond’s sneaky off loads all year. Having to drive from a fair way away to come to training each week is a big commitment but he did it and fit right into the team from the get go. Another who, if he stays focussed on footy, will be a big name in rugby league.

Matty Powell: Matty came down to his first training session at Saints and told me he was a five- eighth. I told Matty that we already had one but I wanted him in this team none the less. After watching him train I decided to slot him in the centres. All season Matty ran perfect lines off Stoney and Adam and his line speed in defence was a huge factor in our semi final and grand final wins against Dragons. A great addition to the team with a great attitude and good sense of humour.

James Togagae: JT was our other centre this season and apart from an injury which sidelined him for a few weeks, he was one of our best backs week in week out. His defence and line speed was rock solid and as I said about matty powell, it played a huge part in our semi and grand final wins. After a few early season mishaps at training, 90% of the year his attendance and attitude were great. Made it very hard to pick the best back award. Good year JT.

Matty Thornton: Matty has been with this team for a few years now and every season he has been consistent. Always comes to training, sometimes late but still there regardless and defensively was outstanding outside Matty Powell or JT. Matty is probably one of the smallest players in the team but has plenty of ticker and showed it when the team needed to stick together.

Jarrod Simpson: Simmo has easily got the best defence in the team. Close to the smallest player he will not back down to anyone, and I mean anyone. I saw front rowers tipping over 100kg this year run straight at him and Simmo not only hit them hard, but actually drove them back. Loves 72 being part of this team and is a true Saints boy. His temper sometimes got the better of him but I know it was only because he is so competitive. Be proud of your season Simmo, it was awesome.

Trent Colquhoun: TC in my eyes is regarded as one of the most senior players in this team, always talking to lift the boys at training and during the game and was another who was playing above his weight. He is a tough competitor, a great defender and was always leading from the front no matter what we were doing - fitness, ball work, nudie runs etc. Has been part of the core of this team since he was 6 or 7 years old and I hope he stays part of it for years to come.

Cameron Stewart: Last year Cammo became the Saints U17’s number one fan. Owned almost every piece of Saints merchandise and didn’t even play for the Club! (played with Heights). This year he signed up to play for Saints, playing two years up and became the number one pest! Apart from his B grade jokes he has got good footballing ability. I see defence as his best asset and if he can lift his involvement in attack he will find himself knocking on the door of rep football. Was a pleasure to have in the team (90% of the time) and had some good one liners. If footy doesn’t work out maybe look for a career in B grade comedy. Good year Cammo.

Josh Rainbow: Poss received our best and fairest last year and did not disappoint again this year. He is quite possibly the biggest 17 year old I have ever seen and caused damage almost every time he touched the ball. Was rewarded with a move to begin training with the Bulldogs’ Toyota Cup team mid season and if he can keep from getting injured and stay fit, I’m sure we will be seeing him run out for Toyota Cup if not next season, the one after.

Liam Davidson: Davo came back to footy this year after a year off and I don’t think it could have worked out better. Whatever he did in that year off worked well for him, as this year, I couldn’t not have Davo on the field. Lightning fast, great ball skills and his attitude more importantly was great. Everything I wanted out of this team Davo produced from day one. Was unlucky not to get a crack in the halves this season. Good year Davo.

Fuata Faafiu: Ata joined us pretty early in the season and after his first game, I was a very happy coach. His work rate was fantastic and in his first game was rewarded with a 4 pointer. At times was a bit raw with his ball skills but with a bit more training and work on his catch pass he could be very hard to stop. There was initially a little trouble with the communication barrier but we got to know each other’s interests and particulars (Peaky) and it was all good. Good year Ata.

COACH’S REPORT

Season 2011 began with our entry into the Kiama 9s where we made it to the 1st division semi, which has been our best effort in three appearances in this event, then it was onto the season proper. This year we competed in the Inner City Combined Competition (ICCC) which was made up of 3 districts, Canterbury, St George and Balmain.

We went in to the comp with only one trial under our belt, so it took about 6 games for us to find our way and get some combinations working and then we put together 6 wins and a draw from 8 games to grab equal 2nd. This was a great effort as we were in the middle of a disastrous injury run which saw us lose 2 players with season ending injuries and for 5 games we had to get by with only 3 reserves often playing the last 20 minutes with no reserves. In this period we played arch rivals Moorebank with the winner taking outright 2nd spot and unfortunately we went down 26- 22 to record our 3rd loss by 4 points for the year. We were now in a position where we had to win our last game to secure a semi final berth.

This game was against Bankstown Bulls coached by the legendary Buck Rogers and the boys really lifted to record a 30-22 win to grab 3rd spot. Our first semi was against and we won 18-12 in a tough encounter, then we played Moorebank in the final. We ran out winners 30 - 0 to progress to the grand final and the chance to send our retiring players out on a high note.

76 The grand final was against the undefeated Auburn Warriors who had 7 players with NRL experience and who haven’t lost a game in 2 years. They weren’t going to lose this one either eventually winning 48-10. Forget the score, the thing I remember most is the way we fought right to the end which is typical of this team. At the end of the game we came 2nd in the entire 3 districts which was a great effort.

To all our sponsors, you helped make this year the success that it was, without your financial assistance we wouldn’t be able to field a team. A special thank you to our big 3 sponsors Revesby Hotel, Salmat and Orange Bins - I sincerely hope you will return next year.

This year marked the end of an era for St Christopher’s with 13 players retiring at the season’s end, collectively they had around 150 years of playing experience with Saints and they will be sorely missed in years to come. In the past 9 seasons this team has played in 5 grand finals winning 3 premierships, 3 finals and 1 semi final to clearly be the best A grade side in the Canterbury competition. Next year will be a rebuilding year and the new players are going to have a big act to follow these boys, but I’m sure the new bunch will be successful. With people like Alan Wren (legendary Saints trainer and life member), Dee Williams (one of the hardest working managers in junior rugby league), Brett Wilson (the best first aider in Sydney) and his assistant "nurse" Debbie Riley success is almost assured.

To our water boys James (Marto) Martin and Justin D'Astoli, thank you and to our ball girl Jordyn Snape and ball boy Jack Finch, the two best ball persons in Australia, thanks heaps.

This year our team had two players playing their 20th season with the Club, Justin Hall and Mick Hanratty - what a wonderful achievement! These 2 families have made a major contribution to the Club and I doubt if we will ever see 2 families like these again.

I first started at this Club in 2004 with the A grade team, where the players had steady girlfriends. Over the last 7 years they married those steady girlfriends and now have children and mortgages and playing rugby league is now a thing of the past but the friends they made at this great Club will be friends for life and the memories will last a lifetime. I want to thank the players for their efforts and friendship and for giving me the opportunity to be a part of their life and I hope I have repaid you by providing you with some great memories. Enjoy your retirement and I’m sure you will be great husbands and fathers and I look forward to seeing your children playing in the future at our great Club, take care.

PLAYER PROFILES

Brock Askell: 2nd row/ centre. One of the many veterans in the side, played in all of the A grade finals to date and always gives 100%. Is retiring and will be sorely missed.

Justin Bold: 2nd row/ prop. Had a few commitments outside of footy this year, plus a 5 week injury meant we never got to see the best of him. On his day can be very damaging in attack and defence and I hope we get to see more of him next year.

Jye Dance: 5/8. Jye had a great year, took control of the left side and made it our attacking strength, a great defender and popular team member.

Matthew Dawes: Prop. What a year this guy had. I had no hesitation in making him captain and he never let me down, finished the year with the most tackles, most hit ups - you name it and he was it. Many people said it was the best year he has ever had and I would have to agree, even opposition teams were talking about him. I could write a book on his heroics this year, but time doesn’t permit it. Well done big fella, this team will miss you big time next year. Enjoy your retirement.

77 Kieran Deas: Prop. Our other bookend. Takes the ball up all day, tackles his heart out and never has a bad game. Well done mate, sadly another another retiree and will be hard to replace.

David Eisenhuth: Hooker/ 1/2/lock. You name the position, he can play it, and will probably get man of the match. Pound for pound the toughest man to ever play rugby league. You could go on forever about this bloke but I will stick my head out and say we would not have made the semis if it wasn’t for Dave - his performance against the Bulls in our last game of the year was the best individual performance I have seen in 20 years of coaching. He is retiring and it’s impossible to replace him. Enjoy your retirement and thanks for the memories.

Dane Elliott: 2nd row/centre. Struggles at times with a dicky back but that doesn’t stop him from giving 100% every time he takes the field. I tried to protect his back this year and he played most of the year in the centres where he made plenty of metres with his powerful running and pulled off some big hits out wide - for his backs sake I hope he retires.

Wayne Geer: Prop. Wayne was a late signing but soon made his presence felt, taking out man of the match 3 times in his first 4 games. A great runner who never got put on his back once, was a solid defender and extremely tough. Who could forget his game against Kingsgrove Colts - they threw everything at him, broke his nose twice with high shots and he was still taking the ball up just as hard in the 70th minute as he was in the first minute. We are not letting this one go.

Justin Hall: Having his 20th season with the Club. Due to heavy work commitments and injury Justin only got to play 4 games and made an impact in every one. Has been a great player for many years, won premierships, captained teams to the premiership and is one of the most respected men in the Club. Best wishes for the future mate.

Michael Hanratty: Hooker. Another player having his 20th season with the Club and has been an absolute champion player throughout his career at the Club. He has won just about every award on offer and is now part of Canterbury Bulldogs rep teams. I’m sure he will be just as successful in his role as trainer and if he puts his mind to it could go a long way at the Bulldogs. Good luck in your retirement Mick.

Wayne Hanratty: Wing/fullback. Came out of retirement to be part of Mick's 20th year. Wayne had a great year and is the 2nd toughest man to play rugby league. Every opposition player tries to take his head off but he just keeps getting up and going again. Proved to be a valuable goal kicker this year kicking 35 from 41 for an 85% success rate. Good year all round Wayne.

Johnathon Horwood: Prop/2nd row. Signed just before June 30th when we were in the middle of a horror injury run. Lacked a bit of fitness due to his late start but in 5 or 10 minute spurts was unstoppable. He will provide the starch up front in the next few years.

James Leten: Fullback. The party boy of the team. Had a bad run with injuries for most of the year but once he got over them, we got a real chance to see him in action. He never disappointed and his efforts in the finals series were outstanding. I can’t wait to see him fully fit next year.

Jason Mayoh: Half back. Poppy had a fantastic year, the best defensive half in the comp. Played on the right side and by the last round had developed a great combination with his side and they were outstanding through the final series. His kicking game was improving every week. Poppy had an outstanding year and I believe he will be better again next year. Well done mate, you killed it.

Graham McFarlane: Left centre, Graham was another player who had an outstanding year with many people telling me it was his best year. A solid defender and a no nonsense attacker, scored 7 tries and is a very popular team member. Could easily fill a number of positions and was always willing to help the team out.

78

Rhett McGillicuddy: 2nd row/prop. Heavy work commitments and 2 dislocated shoulder injuries robbed us of possibly the best 2nd rower in the comp. A great attacker, great defender and a great bloke. A sad way for him to end his career and I doubt we will find another one like Rhett.

Andrew Mortimer: Hooker, lock, half, 5/8, 2nd row and anywhere in between. Morts is another very popular team member who only knows one way and that’s to give 100% and picked up man of the match awards in every position he played this year. We might get another hooker, half or 5/8 next year, but we will never get another Morts! Best wishes for the future mate and thanks for everything.

Laau Oloapu: 2nd row/ centre. The oldest member of the team and by far the best attitude and rarely missed a training session. Missed a few games with injuries and by the time he recovered we were on track to make the semis and unfortunately for "Olly" he never got a lot of game time towards the end. A great team member who volunteered to sit out the semis to give other guys a go, he could have gone to any other side and would have walked into the side - thanks for everything Olly.

Andrew Powell: Hooker. This was Andrew’s first year with the Club. He is an outstanding hooker who will have a long career at hooker at this Club. Another popular team member who was the leading try scorer for most of the year scoring 10 tries.

David Psaroudis: Wing. The best winger in the comp. Wasn’t afraid to come in and do the tough yards to give the forwards a break, chased every kick like his life depended on it, his kick returns were brilliant, tackled himself to a standstill, was our top try scorer with 12 tries. And he did all this while battling crippling shin splints which meant he wasn’t able to train properly for most of the year! A big year Sloppy, well done.

Sam Smythe: 2nd rower. We were privileged to have Sam as part of our team. This guy does everything at 100 miles an hour, runs hard all day, often tops the tackle count and was leading our best forward award till he was injured missing 4 games. By grand final day he was back to his best, and we look forward to having him back next year.

Gary Stone: 2nd row, lock,5/8,fullback, centre. This bloke was Leten’s partner in crime as far as partying goes but when he put his mind to it he was an outstanding player in any position. He has all the skills to play in any of the ball playing positions. He will be in one of those ball playing positions next year and then we will see the best of him. A good solid year Gary.

Anthony Strother: Prop/ 2nd row. Anthony came late to the side (registered on 30 June!) and only played a handful of games but in each game he did something special. Against the Bulls in the last comp game of the year, the game was at the stage where it could have gone either way and Anthony pulled off the hit of the year to knock the ball loose from the Bulls to get us the ball back. Against Moorebank in the final, while we were ahead by 3 tries there was plenty of time for Moorebank to hit back and then Anthony put on a blockbusting run to go 40 metres to score and put the game out of Moorebank’s reach. Thankfully he is already talking about next year.

Marc Walsh: Centre. Marc began the year as assistant coach, but come June 30th there was a spot available so Marc registered to give us a full squad. Marc was only required to play a couple of games and played well in each game and still managed to help me towards seasons end. Thanks for your help mate.

Tom Wilson: 2nd row. Tom was the youngest member of the side who I originally planned to play on the wing with the occasional run in the 2nd row but after 3 games Tom had made the right side 2nd row his position. He then continued to improve every week and had some wonderful games during the year picking up a couple of awards along the way. See you next year Tom.

79

Andrew Loughlin: Wing. And a good winger at that until he suffered a broken leg in May ruling him out for the season. However he continued helping the team in some capacity each week, thanks for your help mate, we could certainly do with more guys like you.

Daniel Fuente: Wing. Unfortunately only played one game before breaking his collarbone, but like Andrew Loughlin, continued to help the team, thanks mate.
