We registered 299 players at the beginning of the season and finished with 288 players after drop-outs, de registrations etc. These made up 20 teams and for the first time ever we fielded three U7 teams. This caused quite a few headaches around grading time especially trying to get the div 2 and 3 players sorted as it is so important to get these guys playing at their right level. We probably didn’t get it 100% right but we’ve learned for the future. Unfortunately our ‘on field’ performances were not on par with previous seasons and we finished well down the ladder on all club championships. This must have caused some ‘frustration’ with 6 players being sent off during the season and 2 Code of Conduct violations from our supporters. Code of conduct violations from our Club should not be happening and they are simply unacceptable! However that aside, 5 sides did manage to make the semis - the 10-3s, 13-1s, 14s, 19-1s and A grade. Well done. The 13s and 14s departed the first week; the 10-3s made it to the final while the U19s and A Grade made the grand final with the U19s eventually being crowned PREMIERS!! I had labeled the 19s as ‘one to watch’ in the last few yearbooks because they had stuck together through the good times (U6 to U11s) and the bad times (U12s to U16s) building their skill levels and waiting for their bodies to catch up to the opposition’s. They made the grand final last year and should have won, but lack of big game experience went against them. This year was a different matter - we played like we were born in the big time and the grand final was effectively over at half time, such was our dominance – and how good was that!!!! None of the boys had previously won a premiership and when reports came in on Mad Monday from as far away as Orient Road Padstow and Alfords Point of hearing ‘Oh when the Saints coming marching in’ bellowing from the Clubhouse around 10.30pm on grand final night, you can understand the jubilation of this team and their supporters. The A Grade were up against Auburn Warriors who simply should not have been in the comp. I hate making excuses, but they were a Bundy Cup standard side so we did well to even compete with them. It was a shame because 14 of the guys were retiring and had put a lot into the season to go out as winners. Unfortunately there was no fairy tale ending but these boys have dominated the A Grade since 2004 so there was no shame in finishing their careers against such a side. Special mention must go to Justin Hall and Mick Hanratty who completed 20 years service with the Club – what a fantastic effort and achievement. Well done. 20 teams took a lot of looking after and we registered 20 coaches, 24 managers and 36 trainers.
