The coat is short and glossy, dark velvety brown to black in color and the sides of the face are very light grayish. Vividly contrasting with this dark background is a distinctive white to orange wedge of erectile hair on their back. Young are born dark brown, with spots on their sides and a reddish tinge on the under parts. The muzzle is light grey in Weight: 100-175 lb. color, and the lips are white. The eyes and ears are small and the tail HBL: 3.8-4.8 ft. SH: 2.1-2.8 ft. is short, with a small black tuft. The suborbital glands below the eyes TL: 4.4-8 in. are very conspicuous. Svensson, and Peter John Taylor Abstract Scientific investigations on the mammals of Angola started over 150 years ago, but information remains scarce and scattered, with only one recent published account. Here we provide a synthesis of the mammals of Angola based on a thorough survey of primary and grey literature, as well as recent unpublished records. We present a short history of mammal research, and provide brief information on each species known to occur in the country. Particular attention is given to endemic and near endemic species. We also provide a zoogeographic outline and information on the conservation of Angolan mammals. We found confirmed records for 291 native species, most of which from the orders Rodentia (85), Chiroptera (73), Carnivora (39), and Cetartiodactyla (33). There is a large number of endemic and near endemic species, most of which are rodents or bats. The large diversity of species is favoured by the wide P. As a specialist grazer, it is extremely susceptible to habitat loss and the transformation of habitat by development. Another major threat to this species is illegal hunting. Although protected and listed as an endangered species in South Africa, illegal poaching is widespread and a major contributor to decreasing oribi populations. This study investigated methods of increasing oribi populations by using translocations and reintroductions to boost oribi numbers and by addressing over­ hunting. Captive breeding has been used as a conservation tool as a useful way of keeping individuals of a species in captivity as a backup for declining wild populations. In addition, most captive breeding programmes are aimed at eventually being able to reintroduce certain captive-bred individuals back into the wild to supplement wild populations. This can be a very costly exercise and often results in failure. However, captive breeding is a good way to educate the public and create awareness for the species and its threats. Captive breeding of oribi has only been attempted a few times in South Africa, with varied results. A private breeding programme in Wartburg, KwaZulu-Natal was quite successful with the breeding of oribi. A reintroduction programme for these captive-bred oribi was monitored using radio telemetry to assess the efficacy ofsuch a programme for the oribi.

Its deficiencies are too rarely acknowledged, and afflict apparently well known taxa of large mammals, notably the Bovidae. Errors in the BSC misconstrue natural patterns of diversity: recognizing too many (Type I errors), or too few species (Type II errors). Most insidious are Type III errors; where evolutionary relationships are misconstrued because the BSC cannot conceptualize, and thus ignores phylogenetic uniqueness. The general trend in current taxonomies of antelopes is to under represent true diversity - exemplified in the dikdiks (Type II errors). Misconstrual of phylogenetic relationships among species (Type III errors) appear rampant in these same taxonomies (the Cephalophini for example).

The tiny calf was born to three-year-old female, Flower. The calf weighed 12 ounces at birth, about the same weight as a can of soup. “Flower and the baby are housed behind-the-scenes in our Africa Barn,” said Erin Cantwell, mammal collection and conservation manager. “The baby is nursing well and gaining weight, and Flower is very protective and patient.” Blue duiker (Philantomba monticola) is a species of antelope found in the forests of western, southern and eastern Africa. They weigh seven to 20 pounds. While they are currently not classified as threatened or endangered, their population is affected by over-hunting and loss of habitat. The duiker gets its name from the Afrikaans word ‘duiker’ which means to dive, which relates to the animal’s habit of ducking away into bushes when danger threatens. The birth was a result of a breeding recommendation from the Blue Duiker Species Survival Plan (SSP) coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). SSPs provide breeding recommendations to maximize genetic diversity, with the goal of ensuring health of the individual animal, as well as the long-term survival of the species population to help save animals from extinction. Malcolm W King has won a staggering 36 top awards with Safari Club International (SCI), and has at least 125 entries in SCI’s Records Book.
