Round No. 3 Venue Surrey Park

Match Report Round 3 saw the boys return to their spiritual home, Surrey Park, bordered by the mighty Elgar and Canterbury Roads, an easy navigation task even for the less spatially aware…

The radar had more red on it than my table linen after a late night geopolitical discourse with the Aga Khan concerning the Gorno-Badakhshan region, I digress.

At an expertly controlled, predetermined off time, the sky was blue without a hint of rain.

Ezra was captain of our boys for the day, great reward for application both at training and on match day, well done Ez.

While there was no rain on the horizon, there was a wind that would have Mawson himself reaching for an extra balaclava. By the way, happy birthday for this Thursday, Doug.

Camberwell won the toss and decided to kick with the wind. Our backline came under immediate pressure, but were tough and Pantherish in repelling attack after attack. Tom Jobling took some fantastic marks, saving certain goals. It was like we had Josh Gibson out there roaming our backline, when he should have shown up at Spotless. Rohan worked as hard as ever, getting the ball and running it out of the backline into the aforementioned gale force wind. Top stuff Rohan. Tom Macey stood his ground in lieu of the onslaught, and applied a bone crunching when it looked almost certain Camberwell would score. Fintan, for the second week in a row ran hard in support, and looked to move the ball forward at every opportunity.

Surrey Park opened their goal account early in the second quarter, with Billy Bodin swooping on a loose ball and making no mistake with his conversion. A lovely clearance in the midfield by Rohan, saw the ball pumped long to Ezra who marked nicely in front. We went deep to our goal line but couldn’t convert. The howling gale had petered out to a whimsical zephyr…

The backline of Harry, Julian, Barnaby and Jack combined really well to stop Camberwell adding too much to their scoreline. Jules and Harry took some telling marks, while Barnaby and Jack combined well to move the ball out of defence with long, accurate kicking. With the ball back in our forward line, Billy laid a great tackle, and blasted his torpedo with great accuracy, straight into the man on the mark….with the home ground advantage his, and his opponent on it, Billy seized on the opportunity to have an unguarded shot on goal. Super stuff Billy. Conor did some great work in the ruck, to again send our boys towards the goals. In the midfield, Rohan laid two mighty tackles in a row that halted Camberwell’s advance.

Third Quarter, premiership quarter. LVP gave a speech not out of place in the hallowed halls

of the UN, and with some expert white board manipulation provided by his strategic cohort,

Chris Banks, had the boys focused and fired up heading out after the main break. Fuelled up on delicious oranges distributed by Fury, the boys were ready to give their all. In this humble correspondents view, the boys played their best quarter of football for the year thus far. All the skills practised at training were used to great effect. Conor dominated the ruck in the midfield, while Harry and Barnaby created real drive against the wind to give our forwards plenty of opportunity. Tom and Rohan combined well to both score great goals on the back of some gritty team football, with Fintan and Aidan continually working hard in support.

Ezra was a defensive beast in the midfield, laying tackle after tackle, and taking a great mark.

Camberwell were pushing the wind advantage full throttle, but our defence was resolute. Justin laid a tackle and put real pressure on, just when it seemed inevitable that the opposition would score. Julian channeled Harry Taylor, and just kept on taking defensive marks and making great decisions with the ball in hand. Jack and Billy also chopped off attacks, and rebounded the footy really well.

The boys held Camberwell to a minimum score, and put a couple on the board for themselves.

Which brings us to the final quarter, and all the hard work in the third paid off handsomely in the last. Tom Macey, Conor, Ezra and Billy put up the proverbial wall in the back line and nothing got through.

In the midfield, Justin, Fintan, Julian and Jack took control and moved the ball forward superbly. Jack went for a run down the wing which was fantastically skillful and great to watch. The forwards reaped the benefit of all the hard work by their teammates down field and put a winning score on the board. Tom Jobling capped of a great days work, by snagging two goals for the quarter, one a ‘Buddy’ special from the boundary line. Aidan took a series of lovely marks in the true CHF position, kicking accurately to Barnaby who took another nice mark and converted the , while also kicking the sealer, a long from downtown. Great stuff Panthers. Result No scoring Under 8’s Black Team Goal Kickers Goals: Tom Jobling 3, Aidan 1, Barnaby 1, Billy 1, Rohan 1. and Awards Opposition Medal : Aidan Timmins
