28 April 2010 Great Territory Lifestyle: to gallop into Darwin

Territory Rugby fans will get the chance to see Australia’s most successful Super 14 Rugby team the ACT Brumbies firsthand..

Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton today said Budget 2010 delivers $900,000 for a new deal to bring the Super 14 powerhouse to Darwin in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

“The Territory Government is committed to enhancing the great Territory lifestyle by bringing a diversity of world-class events to our own backyard,” Mr Hampton said.

“Rugby has a huge and growing following across the Territory, as we have seen with the popularity of the Hottest 7s tournament.

“This Budget commitment will have the star-studded Brumbies play another Australian or New Zealand Super 15 team every February at Austar Park for the ‘Territory Cup’, in a match that will bring big economic benefits while promoting the Territory across borders through this truly international sport.”

Boasting 13 current and former Wallabies in its current roster, including legends like George Smith, and Australian captain Rocky Elsom, the Brumbies have won two championships – the only Australian team to do so.

The $900,000, three-year deal will also see Brumbies players and coaching staff have intensive involvement in the NT Rugby community, both through the NTRU’s Rugby Sevens program and running development programs in the indigenous communities at Nhulunbuy, Jabiru and the Tiwi Islands.”

Mr Hampton said this new deal will benefit thousands of Territory Sports fans.

“Sport is an integral part of the Great Territory Lifestyle and the Henderson Government continues to deliver first-class facilities, opportunities and events to local players, supporters and families,” he said.

“2010 already boasts a packed schedule for sports fans of all persuasions, with AFL, NRL, Superbikes, Crusty Demons, Finke, V8s, NBL and the Indigenous Football Festival on show for Territorians.

“The chance to see world-class Rugby in Darwin will grow the local profile of the game, the international profile of the Territory and inspire a generation of our young athletes.”
