It is registered (No. 0196) as a Charity under the Charities Act, 1982 with effect from 29th June 1985. Singapore Scout Association is also an Institution of Public Character (IPC 000407) with effect from Aug 2010. The Mission of Scouting The mission of Scouting is to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society. In the best traditions of Scouting, SSA focused on the Scouting Method and Duty to God, Country, Others and Self. The past year was indeed a busy year and the Singapore Scout Association successfully organised various events and programmes to commemorate our 100th Anniversary. Our celebrations began with the Centennial Dinner in which Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, a prominent scout leader during his school days, honoured us by gracing the occasion as our Guest-of-Honour on 27 February 2010. More than 1,000 scouts, spanning the generations, attended the dinner. It was indeed a great opportunity to meet old patrol and troop mates and to re-establish scouting friendships lost over the years. The Singapore Scout Association was given the rare honour of naming an orchid to mark our 100th anniversary at the dinner. SM Goh unveiled the orchid named “Dendrobium, Singapore Scouts”. The second event was the staging of the Centennial Scout Rally at Hwa Chong Mr Noel Hon Chia Chun Institution on May 22, 2010. Over 5000 scouts and their family members attended JP, BBM (L), BBM the rally. Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean graced the occasion as our Guest-of- Honour. The Rally was co-hosted by the Hwa Chong Scout Guild Chapter and SSA. President One of the highlights of the Rally was the launching of the “Scout’s Knot” to remind Singapore Scout Association scouts of their responsibility to do a “good turn a day”. The official launching of the Scout Discovery Centre by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports was held on 4 September. Hailed as the first of its kind in Asia Pacific Region (APR), the Centre boasts exhibits and artifacts dating back to the days of the inception of the movement. It is supported under the National Heritage Board’s Heritage Industry Incentive Programme (Hi2P). This Centre will form the basis of permanent scouting displays and exhibits and I am confident that the number of exhibits will grow over the years when scouts contribute their precious mementos to be shares by all. This centre was made possible by a substantial donation from the Lo Foundation and I would like to record our thanks to the Foundation for their generosity. As part of the Centennial celebrations, SSA commissioned a book titled “100 Years of Adventure“. This was officially launched by our Chief Scout, HE President SR Nathan, on 20 September at the Istana. This commemorative book is a pictorial account of the activities of the Scout Movement in Singapore over the years. The Book was designed to generate maximum visual impact, while capturing as comprehensively as possible, 100 years of scouting activities. Photographs, some dating to the early 1900s, have been extensively used in the Centennial Book. This publication is supported by the National Heritage Board. The finale of the Centennial Celebrations was our National Jamboree, Jamb 100. This was held in conjunction with the third ASEAN Jamboree. Jam 100 attracted over 2,300 participants from Singapore and overseas. In particular, we had strong representation from National Scout Organizations from ASEAN. Besides the usual scouts, members of other unformed groups also participated in the jamboree, making it a truly national youth event. Some 7,000 family members and friends of scouts, including visitors from foreign NSOs, thronged the campsites during the Opening Ceremony. Our Guest-of-Honour, Chief Scout President SR Nathan kindly officiated at the Opening Ceremony on Sunday 5th December 2010 at our Sarimbun Scout Camp. In keeping with tradition, an International Night and a Closing Ceremony were also staged. Our Guest-of -Honours at the other two events are: a) International Night, Assoc Prof Koo Tsai Kee Minister of State (Defence) on Tuesday 7th December 2010. b) Closing ceremony graced by Dr. Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Education on Wednesday 8th December 2010. Dr. Ng gave a moving and inspiring speech at the Closing Ceremony. 6 President’s Message As it was also the 3rd ASEAN Jamboree, I am glad to note that over 900 participants from 8 NSOs within ASEAN actively participated in the jamboree. Another 62 participants hailed from APR region and beyond. Apart from promoting the spirit of scouting, Jam 100’s other objectives are to promote an ASEAN identity, environmental sustainability, and the building of a caring society. This is consistent with the global dimensions of scouting. The jamboree helped to promote a culture of peace and developed harmonious relations among people across national boundaries. While building up the movement over the last 100 years has been challenging, it will be even more challenging for the Scout Movement to remain relevant to our youth in our rapidly changing society and to continue to attract new and more members from our community. The SSA will need to continue to reinvent itself in order to strive towards our vision of being a relevant and contributing, uniformed organization. Indeed the success of SSA depends on our volunteers who saw the Movement through many turbulent times in its 100-year history. I would like to commend our Volunteers (Scout Council Members, Commissioners, Scout Guild Members and Adult Leaders) who have made selfless sacrifices and commitment and, who remained with the movement through “thick and thin”. The success of Scouting in Singapore is indeed your success. To our donors, sponsors, partners and well wishers, I would like to express our deep gratitude for all their support, blessings and generosity. Let us continue to work together as a team and leave this world a little better than when we found it.     PRESS RELEASE Ministry of Education 9 February 2007 RESULTS OF THE 2006 SINGAPORE-CAMBRIDGE GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (ORDINARY LEVEL) EXAMINATION 1 The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level Examination is conducted jointly by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board and the Ministry of Education. 2 There were 38,593 school candidates in the 2006 examination. Of these, 38,550 or 99.9% have been awarded certificates. In the 2005 examination, there were 37,400 school candidates or 99.9% who were awarded certificates. Seventeen primary schools have been awarded the Programme for School-Based Excellence in 2008. The 37 schools which received the award between 2005 and 2007 had their awards renewed this year (refer to Annex). 2. In addition, nine secondary schools have been awarded Niche Programme status in 2008. The 20 schools which received the award between 2005 and 2007 also had their awards renewed this year (refer to Annex). 3.     MEDIA ADVISORY 22 March 2019 Embargoed till 8pm, 22 March 2019 WINNERS OF NATIONWIDE SOTA PRIMARY 6 ART COMPETITION 2019 1 The School of the Arts, Singapore (SOTA) announced the winners of the SOTA Primary 6 Art Competition 2019 at the Award Ceremony and opening of the winners’ exhibition on Friday, 22nd March 2019 at the SOTA Gallery. With the support of Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd (“Mapletree”), SOTA reached out to more than 140 primary schools this year, receiving more than 650 entries, up from the over 500 entries they received for the inaugural 2018 competition. 2 50 finalists were selected to participate in the specially organised SOTA Junior Academy (JA) in March where they were exposed to a variety of 2D and 3D art-making processes. Their submission pieces are put on display at the Winners’ Exhibition together with their other works created during the Junior Academy. Ten winners were also announced at the Award Ceremony which was attended by finalists, their family members, teachers, and principals along with SOTA and Mapletree representatives. 3 The competition was launched in end 2017 as a platform for young artists to express their creativity and hone their skills. “This is one of SOTA’s key outreach programmes, providing more opportunities for talented primary school pupils with a love for visual arts to showcase their skills.
