In conjunction with the oral histories acquired from the local residents, the study incorporates inquiries on historical narratives and documents, together with photographic and illustrative materials obtained from physical surveys of thirty religious structures for data collection. The textual investigations indicate that Mon people migrated to the Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya in large number during the 18th century, and established their settlements in and around Pakkret area. Located northwest of the present day Bangkok in Nonthaburi province, Pakkret developed into an important community of the Mon diasporas, possessing a well-organized local administration that contributed to its economic prosperity. Although the Mons was assimilated into the Siamese political structure, they were able to preserve most of their traditions and customs. At the same time, the productions of their cultural artifacts encompassed many Thai elements as well, as evident from Mon Buddhist temples and monasteries in Pakkret. The stylistic analyses of these structures further reveal the following findings. Thai-Burmese warfare during the sixteenth century 69 THAI-BURMESE WARFARE DURING THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY AND THE GROWTH OF THE FIRST TOUNGOO EMPIRE1 Pamaree Surakiat Abstract A new historical interpretation of the pre-modern relations between Thailand and Burma is proposed here by analyzing these relations within the wider historical context of the formation of mainland Southeast Asian states. The focus is on how Thai- Burmese warfare during the sixteenth century was connected to the growth and development of the first Toungoo empire. An attempt is made to answer the questions: how and why sixteenth century Thai-Burmese warfare is distinguished from previous warfare, and which fundamental factors and conditions made possible the invasion of Ayutthaya by the first Toungoo empire. Introduction As neighbouring countries, Thailand and Burma not only share a long border but also have a profoundly interrelated history. During the first Toungoo empire in the mid-sixteenth century and during the early Konbaung empire from the mid-eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries, the two major kingdoms of mainland Southeast Asia waged wars against each other numerous times. This warfare was very important to the growth and development of both kingdoms and to other mainland Southeast Asian polities as well. 1 This article is a revision of the presentations in the 18th IAHA Conference, Academia Sinica (December 2004, Taipei) and The Golden Jubilee International Conference (January 2005, Yangon). Straddling the Chao Phraya River, the nation’s principal waterway, the province is extremely important, as it was the Siamese capital for four centuries. The city of Ayutthaya is 76 km. north of Bangkok and boasts numerous magnificent ruins from its days as the capital. Just to the south, in perfect condition, stands the royal palace of Bang Pa-in set in splendid gardens. The province is also noted for H.M. the Queen’s Bang Sai Arts and Crafts Centre. The ancient city of Ayutthaya, formally designated Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya was the Thai capital for 417 years, and is one of Thailand’s major tourist attractions. Many ancient ruins and art works can be seen in a city that was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong when the Thais were forced southwards by northern neighbours. During the period when Ayutthaya was capital, 33 kings and several dynasties ruled the kingdom, until the glittering city was sacked by the Burmese in 1767, ruined and abandoned. The extensive ruins and the historical records demonstrate that Ayutthaya was one of Southeast Asia’s most prosperous cities. -

This paper will explains that relational art is in the process of art of engagement. That is why art has become the community engagement which art objects and practical based are of the relational art and relational aesthetics. ÚıÙ¯ The Influence of Buddhism in Historical Thai Art Lertsiri Bovornkitti* Abstract There is a historical relationship between Buddhism and indigenous Thai art; Buddhism has had an immense influence on Thai art and culture. The emergence of Thai art reflects the integration of Buddhist components into cultural, political and societal Thai systems, and mostly in the way that Buddhism has been represented from generation to generation and in the way people have shown devotion; Buddhist components such as Buddha images, Buddhist monks, and Buddhist activities (e.g., festivals and ceremonies) have been acknowledged as significant components of Thai culture. The influence of Buddhism on Thai art and culture has been systematic and direct from the beginning of the Sukhothai Kingdom at the beginning of the thirteenth century. Subsequently, the indigenous art forms and styles engaged in the representation of Buddhism were integrated into the Thai cultural mainstream during the early Rattanakosin era, creating aesthetic art forms, which have been classified into “classical Thai art”, such as mural painting, sculpture and Chang-sip-moo, and “folk art”. Such influence of Buddhism on historical Thai art is relevant in the context of scrutinizing the relationship between Buddhism and Thai art. This communication is aimed at pointing out the long-standing role of Buddhism in the development of Thai art in the past, especially the integration of the Buddhist context, which has led to the creation and the birth of indigenous Thai arts with the styles of “classical Thai art” and “folk art”, both of which are genuinely Thai. -

3 History of Thailand in Brief In order to understand the culture of a state, it is necessary to trace back different eras of the history of that state. The history of Thailand begins 5,000 years ago; the ancestors of today’s Thai people lived in southern China areas. Through various migration streams they worked their way south to Thailand, Burma and Laos. They entered the Southeast Asian peninsular, today’s Thailand at Chiang Saen, on the southern banks of Mekong River. It was the migrants from southern China who formed the first city states in the northern regions of present day Thailand.32 3.1 The Origin of Thai People and Historical Development According to Noppawan Sirivejkul33 the Thai historical development may be divided into 9 eras which can be briefly summarized as follows: Table 15: Division of Thai Historical Eras Era or Kingdom Century A.D. When the first histories of Thai literature appeared in the 1950s/Siyjtnade no mention of the Xu. novel and it was not until the 1960s that the first attempts to record its history were made. This study plots the major landmarks in charting the history of the Thai novel in the ensuing thirty years. Chapter 1 discusses the terms for ‘literature’ and the ‘novel’ and looks at the first histories of Thai literature and histories of Thai literature written in English. Chapter 2 surveys the work of the first ‘historians’ of the Thai novel, Yot Watcharasathian, Prakat Watcharapho’n and Sathian Chanthimatho’n. -

Proposal for Thai Manuscript
Jo-Fan Huang Harvard University A Technical Examination of 7 Thai Manuscripts in the 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries Abstract The ideology of Buddhism was taught through various art forms such as architecture, sculptures, murals, and manuscripts on both palm leafs and papers. Little has been studied on the materials and techniques of Thai manuscripts on paper (Samut khoi). A total of seven Thai manuscripts were selected from the Philip Hofer Collection in the Asian Department of the Harvard University Art Museums for technical examination and art historical research. The project focuses on an 18th century manuscript, Illustrated Tales from Jataka; six other manuscripts from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries (2 each) were selected for comparison. The scope of the project includes researching historical information on Thai manuscripts and how political movement and commerce effected the artists’ choice for painting materials. The techniques include visual examination, fiber analysis, ultraviolet and infrared light examination, non-destructive micro-x-ray fluorescence (XRF), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The analyses indicate the presence of huntite, lead white, calcite, indigo, red lead, vermilion, gamboge, ultramarine, and red earth in the 18th century manuscripts. In the 19th and 20th century manuscripts, the analyses indicate lead white, calcite, red lead, vermilion, gamboges, chrome yellow, emerald green and Prussian blue, as well as possible barium sulfate, titanium white, and viridian. Lead white, gold leaf, and vermilion were found consistently in all seven manuscripts. The results suggest that different blue pigments were used in different centuries: indigo in the 18th century, ultramarine and Prussian blue in the 19th century and Prussian blue alone in the 20th century. -
