Partido Comunista de España Secretaría de Relaciones Internacionales c/Olimpo 35 (28043) Madrid Julio Anguita passed away May 16, 2020 Communist Party of Spain Dear comrades, Julio Anguita, who was Secretary General of the Communist Party of Spain from 1988 to 1998 and General Coordinator of the United Left (Izquierda Unida) between 1989 and 2000, has passed away. He was seventy-eight years old and he was a communist militant from clandestinity, under the fascist dictatorship of General Franco . After the conquest of freedom, Anguita ran for municipal elections leading the communist candidacy in the city of Córdoba, being elected mayor in 1979. From the city council of Cordoba he developed an active policy in favor of the workers, the most humble, and of those who had never had a voice in the city government. He managed to put an end to the the degradation of the poorest neighborhoods and always maintained a firm and lucid defense of the common values that unite us to those history tends to forget, keeping his persistence in the struggle to conquer dignity and justice. When he was elected secretary general of the PCE, he maintained the conviction that communist proposals should always be based on a political program that reflected the needs of the workers and that was oriented towards advancing socialism. He never lost sight of the importance of keeping the historical memory alive in a country, Spain, which still has anonymous graves of the victims of fascism; nor did he forget the hope that lives in the workers movement, the tears of those defeated in the Civil War imposed by fascism, the warm and fraternal encouragement of the dignified Spanish Republic that once defeated always knew that one day it would return. When his heart began to fail, he took a step back but he always kept intact his communist conviction, his constant internationalism, and his militancy for socialism in a world that must leave behind the ruins of capitalism. In this time of farewell, we want to share with you our sorrow for the death of Julio Anguita, and also the pride of having been his comrades, of having shared the years, honesty, strength and rebellion in the face of helplessness of someone who always knew how to handle the magnitude of our endevours, socialism and communism, which justify our struggle and continue to wait for us We will never forget him..
