IDH 2930 Section 1D18 HNR Read Moneyball Tuesday 3 (9:35-10:25 a. m.) Little Hall 0117 Brian McCrea brmccrea@ufl. edu (352) 478-9687 Moneyball includes twelve chapters, an epilogue, and a (for me) important postscript. We will read and discuss one chapter a week, then finish with a week devoted to the epilogue and to the postscript. At our first meeting we will introduce ourselves to each other and figure out who amongst us are baseball fans, who not. (One need not have an interest in baseball to enjoy Lewis or to enjoy Moneyball; indeed, the course benefits greatly from disinterested business and math majors.) I will ask you to write informally every class session about the reading. I will not grade your responses, but I will keep a word count. At the end of the semester, we will have an Awards Ceremony for our most prolific writers. While this is not a prerequisite, I hope that everyone has looked at Moneyball the movie (starring Brad Pitt as Billy Beane) before we begin to work with the book. Moneyball first was published—to great acclaim—in 2003. So the book is fifteen-year’s old, and the “new” method of evaluating baseball players pioneered by Billy Beane has been widely adopted. Beane’s Oakland A’s no longer are as successful as they were in the early 2000s. What Lewis refers to as “sabremetrics”—the statistical analysis of baseball performance—has expanded greatly. Baseball now has statistics totally different from those in place as Lewis wrote: WAR (Wins against replacement), WHIP (Walks and hits per inning pitched) among them.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Thursday, September 10, 2020 Braves.com Braves set NL standard with 29-run outburst Atlanta breaks Modern Era record in National League (since 1900) By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- Adam Duvall produced his second three-homer game within an eight-day span to help the Braves roll to a record-setting 29-9 win over the Marlins on Wednesday night at Truist Park. Duvall became the first player to record two three-homer games while wearing a Braves uniform, and his efforts helped Atlanta set a National League record for runs in a game in the modern era (since 1900). “That was pretty amazing to be a part of,” Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “I’ve never seen an offense click like that.” The Braves fell just one run short of tying the modern record for runs scored in a game, set when the Rangers defeated the Orioles, 30-3, in the first game of a doubleheader on Aug. 22, 2007, at Camden Yards. Dating back to 1900, no NL club had scored more than 28 runs in a game. The Braves’ franchise record was 23, a mark tallied during the second game of a doubleheader against the Cubs on Sept. 2, 1957. Ronald Acuña Jr. contributed to his three-hit night with a three-run home run to cap a six-run fifth. But it was his bases-loaded double in the sixth inning that gave the Braves a new franchise record for runs in a single game, opening a 25-8 lead. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Atlanta became the first MLB team to score at least 22 runs through the first five innings since the Blue Jays (24 runs) in a win over the Orioles on June 26, 1978.

  • A's News Clips, Monday, February 20, 2012 by Joe Stiglich
A’s News Clips, Monday, February 20, 2012 Oakland A's have plenty to do in camp before opener By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune For those who think spring training is merely for players to knock the winter rust off, consider the A's situation. Their to-do list includes identifying a starting first baseman and designated hitter, choosing as many as three pitchers for their five-man rotation, finding a closer and sorting out a crowded outfield. Then consider they have 11 fewer days to make those decisions than they normally would, thanks to a March 28 season opener against the Seattle Mariners in Tokyo. The A's play their final Cactus League game March 21 and fly to Japan the next day. Were they not heading abroad, they probably would have played their final Cactus League exhibition April 1. Perhaps that's why A's manager Bob Melvin was on the move during the first pitchers-and-catchers workout Sunday, observing as many players as he could. "It's one thing if you have a starting group at every position and you're evaluating young guys," Melvin said. "We're going to have some guys that are integral parts of our team that we're going to have to evaluate." The A's will have 21 Cactus League games on which to base those evaluations before flying to Tokyo on March 22. Interesting to note is that the A's could have bought themselves another week to sort out their roster. The Mariners were granted permission by Major League Baseball to open camp Feb.
