and North Middlesex Area Notes for footpath secretaries

Reporting footpath problems

I. Identify exact location: Grid reference: To report a problem you need to know its exact location. A grid reference from the OS map is the best way. Streetmap will give you this - find the location on a map, “move arrow” to the position of the problem then click “find coordinates” below the map. Nat Grid is one of the coordinates it gives you. Or you can learn to read them yourself - see Grid References at http://www.ramblers.org.uk/advice/navigation/map-reading.aspx for help. Parish: It is also very helpful to identify which parish the problem is in. (Not necessary in London .) Parish names are marked on the OS Explorer maps in grey capitals about 3mm high with CP () after them. Parish boundaries are small black dots. County and unitary authority boundaries are also shown. Footpath reference number on Definitive Map: By consulting the on-line version of the Definitive Map (if there is one – see below) you can identify the footpath reference number for added completeness.

Registered office: 2nd floor, Camelford House, 87-90 Albert Embankment, London SE1 7TW 3. Definitive maps: The Definitive Map & Statement for Hertfordshire In Hertfordshire the Definitive Map (all 91 sheets) may be viewed at County Hall in Hertford, with copies at main libraries and at District/Borough Council offices. General information about the Definitive Map and Statement and the on-line version of the Definitive Map can be found on the Herts Direct website http://webmaps.hertsdirect.org/row/row.htm. All rights of way are numbered but different local authorities use different systems of numbering. In Hertfordshire they are numbered on a parish basis, together with a code to show the nature of the rights. * Public footpaths (FP) are normally open only to walkers * Public bridleways (BR) are normally open only to walkers, horse-riders and pedal cyclists * Restricted byways (RB) are open to walkers, horse-riders, and drivers/riders of non-mechanically propelled vehicles (such as horse-drawn carriages and pedal cycles) * Byways Open to All Traffic (BOAT) are open to all classes of traffic including motor vehicles, though they may not be maintained to the same standard as ordinary roads. So for example Essendon BR 6 is a bridleway in Essendon parish and Ridge FP 23 is a footpath in Ridge parish.

The Definitive Map & Statement for Barnet There is a Definitive map showing rights of way in Barnet, but there are no copies. The map is held at the Barnet Council office in the North London Business Park. They are very reluctant to give access to it, and have to be reminded that it is a legal requirement to do so. In the past, there was an on line version of it, but that was removed a few years ago. There is talk of putting up a new version, but that still has not happened.
