Our time together was far too short, but you live on in my heart. Acknowledgements In the course of my dissertation journey, I have benefitted from many people and institutions to whom I would like to express my sincere gratitude. My utmost gratitude goes to my supervisor, Dr. Karin Wilkins. I came to the Department of Radio-Television-Film nearly ten years ago to explore the intersections of critical studies, communications, and development. Since then, she has helped me to mature as a scholar, encouraging me to ask incisive questions, to confront them methodically, and articulate evidence systematically. Her enthusiastic support for my dissertation project gave me the courage to challenge myself and persevere through difficult circumstances. Oftentimes, my project was sustained by her unrelenting passion and confidence in my work. It is not only her intellectual influence, but her kindness and genuine concern for her students to which I am most indebted. -

Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: an Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave
International Journal of Communication 15(2021), 1810–1835 1932–8036/20210005 Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: An Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave DAL YONG JIN1 Simon Fraser University, Canada By employing cultural production approaches in conjunction with the global cultural economy, this article attempts to determine the primary characteristics of the rapid growth of local cultural industries and the global penetration of Korean cultural content. It documents major creators and their products that are received in many countries to identify who they are and what the major cultural products are. It also investigates power relations between cultural creators and the surrounding sociocultural and political milieu, discussing how cultural creators develop local popular culture toward the global cultural markets. I found that cultural creators emphasize the importance of cultural identity to appeal to global audiences as well as local audiences instead of emphasizing solely hybridization. Keywords: cultural production, Hallyu, cultural creators, transnational culture Since the early 2010s, the Korean Wave (Hallyu in Korean) has become globally popular, and media scholars (Han, 2017; T. J. Yoon & Kang, 2017) have paid attention to the recent growth of Hallyu in many parts of the world. Although the influence of Western culture has continued in the Korean cultural market as well as elsewhere, local cultural industries have expanded the exportation of their popular culture to several regions in both the Global South and the Global North. Social media have especially played a major role in disseminating Korean culture (Huang, 2017; Jin & Yoon, 2016), and Korean popular culture is arguably reaching almost every corner of the world. -
Secret Sunshine/ Milyang (2007) “Are You Looking? Do You See?” Major
Secret Sunshine/ Milyang (2007) “Are you looking? Do you see?” Major Credits: Director: Chang-dong Lee Writer: Chang-dong Lee, from a novel by Chong-jung Yi Cinematography: Yong-kyo Cho Cast: Do-yeon Jeon (Shin-ae/ Mrs. Lee), Kang-ho Song (Jong Chan/ Mr. Kim) Production Context: Chang-dong Lee (b. 1954) was a successful novelist before turning to the cinema in 1992, when he became part of the Korean New Wave that includes Kim Ki-duk (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring), Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder), and Hong Sang-soo (Hill of Freedom). Lee was drawn to filmmaking following a political shift in Korea away from socialism around the time of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. For Lee, the cinema replaced literature as a means of conveying his social concerns, as becomes clear in his second feature, Peppermint Candy (1999). In contrast to the striking flashback narrative structure of that film and the socially marginalized protagonists of Oasis (2002), Secret Sunshine was designed with “normality” (Lee’s term) in mind. Both lead actors were well known to Korean audiences. Kang-ho Song’s role as Mr. Kim marks a departure from type, since he was best known for gangster and detective roles (most notably in Joon-ho Bong’s excellent Memories of Murder, 2003). Do-yeon Jeon, who won the acting prize at Cannes for her portrayal of Shin-ae, reportedly “hated” the director during their time together shooting the film. Cinematic Aspects: 1. Long Take: Lee deploys these unedited shots at key moments in the narrative (Interestingly, the director has testified that he had decided not to use long takes to preserve the film’s “normality”). -

Summer 2019 Study Abroad Program
2019 Summer Study Abroad Program General Information 01. Program Information 1. Title: 2019 GW Institute for Korean Studies Summer Study Abroad Program, “Korea in the 21st Century: Past, Present, and Future in the Age of Globalization.” 2. Date: Sunday, June 23, 2019 – Saturday, July 6, 2019 3. Location: Korea (Seoul, Busan, and other cities) 4. Description: By visiting various sites in South Korea, we will use the border as a lens into exploring four main themes: Korean identities, culture, division, and reunification. We will treat these themes not as mutually exclusive but constitutive entities. Thus, these four themes will be reflected in readings, discussions, on-site lectures, and site- visits. In addition, the concept of the border will be the prime into the larger political, economic, social, and cultural conditions that enabled its metamorphosis. In particular, we will trace the transnational processes of modernization, imperialism, colonization, the Cold War, decolonization, and neoliberalism that have shaped and continue to shape Korean identity and culture. Our interdisciplinary inquiry draws from history, literature, anthropology, business, film, media, and performance studies. 5. Organizers 6. Participants 7.

Anti-Cholera Activities of the Police in Early Colonial Korea
01Park Yunjae_OK 2011.1.24 3:45 PM 페이지151 (주)anyprinting(pmac) Sanitizing Korea: Anti-Cholera Activities of the Police in Early Colonial Korea Park Yunjae The Gabo Reform cabinet in 1894 instituted the sanitary police system. With no cure or vaccine for epidemics available and few Western-trained doctors, the task of implementing disinfection and quarantine had to be taken up by the police. However, the sanitary police active in late Joseon Korea worked under civilian supervision. After the Protectorate Treaty of 1905, Japan changed the sanitary police system in Korea, reinforcing the role and the responsibility of the police. Unlike the Korean government, the colonial authority saw police enforcement as the mainstay of administrative implementation. The police-centered sanitizing system was fully established in 1911 when the full responsibility for sanitation work was transferred to the police. Whenever cholera raged through Korea, one of the first measures the Japanese colonial government took was to inspect sea vessels and trains. It was the police who were sent to examine the vessels and crews and also to see to the implementation of quarantine. Vaccination was regarded as the most effective preventive measure and the police controlled all aspects of vaccination campaigns. The most critical mission the police were assigned to carry out was house inspection. The police-centered anti-cholera activities seemed to work. With the exception of the years 1919, 1920 and 1926, colonial Korea did not see as many casualties from cholera as Japan did during the same period. However, the anti-cholera activities carried out by the police often encountered a hostile response from the people. -

30 Established 1961 Monday, May 7, 2018 Lifestyle Movies Cate Blanchett’s feminist wake-up call to Cannes ate Blanchett knew there was something seriously awry with the Cannes film festi- Cval when the winners of its top prize, the Palme d’Or, were gathered together to cele- brate its 50th anniversary in 2014. Among the sea of grey heads on the stage there was only one woman, Jane Campion, who had won for “The Piano” two decades earlier. “Sometimes things have to get that bad and that stark for us to say, ‘Hang on a minute. There’s something wrong-literally-with this picture’,” the actress said this week, days before heading the jury that will chose this year’s winner. With Cannes and the film industry still reel- ing from the Harvey Weinstein scandal, some saw her appointment as a quick-fix PR coup to head off critics. The world’s top film festival, which likes to think of itself as “the movie Olympics”, has long faced criticism for its “dis- mal” attitude to female directors. Only three of the 21 films in competition for the Palme d’Or are directed by women, the same number as last year. And the festival’s decision to lift its ban on controversial Danish director Lars Von In this file photo Actress Cate Blanchett arrives on Trier, who has faced sexual harassment claims the red carpet for the 88th Oscars in Hollywood, from the singer Bjork and whose company has California. — AFP photos been hit by multiple accusations, further raised eyebrows.
