Star Trek Beyond Pays Off for IATSE 891 Members FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE VANCOUVER, BC, JULY 21, 2016 Hailing all frequencies - Star Trek Beyond pays off for IATSE 891 members Anticipation for the North American release of Star Trek Beyond this Friday is building. Early reviews of the movie have been stellar and all signs point to a metagalactic hit. That’s great news for the 1,183 talented artists and technicians of IATSE Local 891 who helped create the movie, representing 19 different disciplines. Not only did Star Trek Beyond once again showcase the world class skill and professionalism of the members of IATSE 891 and BC’s creative industry as a whole, the production payroll for IATSE Local 891 alone was approximately $39 million. “That level of local spending by just one production supports so many individuals, families and BC businesses. It also illustrates, yet again, that BC is a fully mature, world class production centre and that the skill and professionalism of our crews are second to none. We can take on any motion picture project, even extraterrestrial ones,” says Phil Klapwyk, IATSE Local 891 Business Representative. With production levels in BC soaring, and the members of IATSE Local 891 currently working on 38 productions (ten feature films, 24 series, and four movies of the week), we can expect the economic benefits of the local motion picture industry to continue to pay off for the province and Canada as a whole. “Since June of last year, we are thrilled to have welcomed over 1,000 professional artists and technicians into our membership. That’s a sure sign that our industry is growing and that confidence in the BC product is extremely strong. We have a lot to celebrate and as an ardent Trekkie, I can’t wait to see Star Trek Beyond this Friday,” says Klapwyk. • Chapter Five Bibliographic Essay: Studying Star Trek
Jessamyn Neuhaus http://geekypedagogy.com @GeekyPedagogy January 2019 Chapter Five Bibliographic Essay: Studying Star Trek Supplement to Chapter Five, “Practice,” of Geeky Pedagogy: A Guide for Intellectuals, Introverts, and Nerds Who Want to Be Effective Teachers (Morgantown: University of West Virginia Press, 2019) In Chapter Five of Geeky Pedagogy, I argue that “for people who care about student learning, here’s the best and worst news about effective teaching that you will ever hear: no matter who you are or what you teach, you can get better with practice. Nothing will improve our teaching and increase our students’ learning more than doing it, year after year, term after term, class after class, day after day” (146). I also conclude the book with a brief review of the four pedagogical practices described in the previous chapters, and note that “the more time we can spend just doing them, the better we’ll get at effective teaching and advancing our students’ learning” (148). The citations in Chapter Five are not lengthy and the chapter does not raise the need for additional citations from the scholarship on teaching and learning. There is, however, one area of scholarship that I would like to add to this book as a nod to my favorite geeky popular text: Star Trek (ST). ST is by no means a perfect franchise or fandom, yet crucial to its longevity is its ability to evolve, most notably in terms of diversifying popular presentations. To my mind, “infinite diversity in infinite combinations” will always be the most poetic, truest description of both a lived reality as well as a sociocultural ideal—as a teacher, as a nerd, and as a human being.

  • Responses to Sarcasm in Three Star Trek Movies
LEXICON Volume 6, Number 1, April 2019, 11-20 Responses to Sarcasm in Three Star Trek Movies Shafira Sherin*, AdiSutrisno English Department, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia *Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Sarcasm has been widely studied in various disciplines such as linguistics, psychology, neurology, sociology, and even cross-cultural studies. Its aggravating nature, however, often elicits various responses by the hearer. This study attempts to investigate responses to sarcasm by the characters of three Star Trek “reboot” version movies. It aims to examine responses to sarcasm and to analyze the patterns of responses to sarcastic remarks in relation to the characters’ interpersonal relationship. The data used in this research were taken from the dialogues of the movies, which were categorized into eight classes of responses: laughter, literal, zero response, smile, nonverbal, sarcasm, topic change, and metalinguistic comment. The results show that the most frequent responses conveyed by the characters were literal responses (29.41%), whereas the least frequent responses are laughter (1.96%). There is no pattern in responding to sarcastic remarks in relation to the interpersonal relationship between the interlocutors. However, strangers tend to respond in literal, zero response, and topic change. Meanwhile, close acquaintance tend to give various responses. Keywords: interpersonal relationship; pragmatics; response; sarcasm. INTRODUCTION understood by the parties involved. It can be said that if the sarcastic remarks are expressed in Sarcasm, often mistakenly understood as appropriate circumstances, sarcastic criticisms, no verbal irony, is a figure of speech bearing a semantic matter how negative it may cause, may leave interpretation exactly opposite to its literal positive impacts such as laughter and make the meaning.

Marquette University e-Publications@Marquette English Faculty Research and Publications English, Department of 1-1-2017 Hokey Religions: Star Wars and Star Trek in the Age of Reboots Gerry Canavan Marquette University, [email protected] Accepted version. Extrapolation, Vol. 58, No. 2-3 (2017): 153-180. DOI. © 2017 Liverpool University Press. Used with permission. 1 “Hokey Religions: Star Wars and Star Trek in the Age of Reboots” Gerry Canavan In the last few years debates over stewardship, fidelity, and corporate ownership have arisen in both STAR WARS and STAR TREK1 fandom, as long-standing synchronicity between corporate interest and fan investment in these franchises has suddenly and very sharply diverged. After several decades nurturing hyperbolic “expanded universes” in tie- in media properties, through which devoted fans might more fully inhabit the narrative worlds depicted in the more central film and television properties, the corporate owners of both properties have determined that their commercial interests now lie in reboots that eliminate those decades of excess continuity and allow the properties to “start fresh” with clean entry points for a new generation of fans. In the case of STAR WARS, the ongoing narrative has been streamlined by prioritizing only the six films and certain television programs as “canonical” and relegating the rest to the degraded status of apocryphal “Star Wars Legends,” in hopes of drawing in rather than alienating potential viewers of the forthcoming Episodes 7-9 (2015-2019). In the case of STAR TREK, the transformation is even more radical; utilizing a diegetic time-travel plotline originating within the fictional universe itself, the franchise has been “reset” to an altered version of its original 1960s incarnation, seemingly relegating every STAR TREK property filmed or published before 2009 to the dustbin of future history—in effect obsolescing its entire fifty-year history, “canon” and “non-canon” alike, in the name of attracting a new audience for the rebooted franchise.

In contrast to avidin, streptavidin is not glycosylated Primary antibody* and is therefore uncharged at neutral pH (6.5 versus 10). This lowers Negative Control Reagents* nonspecific background staining. Streptavidin also lacks carbohydrate Hematoxylin* side chains that may be another cause of non-specific background. Bluing Reagent* Another key advantage of streptavidin is the significant increase in Mounting medium* sensitivity (probably due to less steric hindrance), thus facilitating an increase in overall binding capacity. * Biocare Medical Products: Refer to a Biocare Medical catalog for Finally, streptavidin-enzyme conjugates are much more stable than an further information regarding catalog numbers and ordering ABC complex.
