Leading Voices within the Campus Charlottenburg Network

Campus Charlottenburg grew out of the desire to forge a stronger link between the two universities and the surrounding area. The District Authority recognizes the value of the closer alliance of what it sees as a combination of creativity, technical knowledge, diversity and brilliant minds unequalled elsewhere in Europe. We believe there is a great deal of potential here for both universities and the local area. Unlike with other research centers of comparable scope, such as , a well-developed infrastructure is already in place, waiting to be developed. With other important local partners coming on board, the next steps can now be taken towards the creation of a fully-integrated location from which all stakeholders can benefit.

Along with London and Paris, is the hub of the European technology startup scene. What makes Berlin special is the concentration of the two key ingredients that businesses are looking for: talent and knowledge. Campus Charlottenburg, with its two universities and various research institutes, is a hotspot for these commodities and has the potential to play a key role. As developers of the Adlershof Technology Park, we can contribute our experience of transforming knowledge into business success. In only a short space of time, the Charlottenburg Innovation Center (CHIC) has succeeded in becoming the most sought-after address for tech startups in this part of the city, and the brand is proving highly effective, particularly in fostering a sense of self-belief. Together we can help make Campus Charlottenburg a future location within

Berlin.

Although as one of the city’s leading cultural beacons the may cut a somewhat exotic figure within the environment of Campus Charlottenburg, we are very much looking forward to the exchange of ideas and cooperation with partners from diverse branches of knowledge. We are already working with the Berlin University of the Arts in a number of areas, and would like to explore the many other possibilities for development Campus Charlottenburg provides.

Campus Charlottenburg is a multi-faceted brand reflecting the essence of what makes Berlin so special: dynamism, openness, the sense of being a lab for trying out new ideas - a place both original and authentic. We need many more shining examples to truly establish our global position, with an emphasis very much on quality and not just quantity. We need to strive to develop Campus Charlottenburg, to attract leading researchers and global businesses. This is a location set to join the leading ranks of research, a force to be reckoned with, and ultimately a brand whose presence is felt globally.

Through Campus Charlottenburg, the Museum of Photography has been able to develop close associations with universities, institutes and research-oriented enterprises within academia. We have been working very closely with the Berlin University of the Arts in our exhibition series Seen By, which provides young curators and artists with a platform for their first museum presentation. We are also collaborating with the TU Berlin on developing the art history and museum studies programs. Such close associations reveal the great potential of Campus Charlottenburg for all stakeholders in .

Campus Charlottenburg offers us the opportunity to develop exchanges and closer associations with other organizations. The TU Berlin has been our most important partner since the founding of the National Metrology Institute (PTB) in 1987 and a lively academic exchange continues to flourish with internees, bachelor’s and master’s students as well as doctoral candidates working at the Institute, and our staff teaching at the TU Berlin. But it is not only the TU Berlin with whom we enjoy close ties; our association with Frauenhofer HHI is also continuously growing.

Campus Charlottenburg is a place of ideas, creativity and diversity in Berlin’s City West. Numerous facilities and institutions from the realms of research, education, science, economics and politics are striving to find answers to the questions of tomorrow. The interaction of these diverse players serves to create inspiring interconnections for the discourse concerning the shaping of the future. Campus Charlottenburg offers a new style of working association and a platform for engaging with others. The TU Berlin is delighted to be part of this, has a growing awareness of the urban community of which it forms a part and is signaling its commitment to this special area through projects such as the redevelopment of Hertzallee.

Here in Charlottenburg, Berlin has the chance to realize its potential, particularly in the areas of research and development. Digitalization represents great challenges and opportunities for all stakeholders in society, and not just Telekom. As one of Telekom’s research institutes, we are seeking to build a bridge between business and science, working on developments together with researchers from the nearby universities and institutes. We believe the possibilities for cooperation emerging from the newly-founded Einstein Center will prove highly valuable, creating a win-win situation for all involved – the researchers, Berlin and us.

Campus Charlottenburg is about much more than cooperation between universities. We need to have as a common goal the creation of a better connection between the Campus and the surrounding urban area. My desire is to see the wonderful diversity and great potential provided by the interface between science, research, art, culture and technology, right here in the heart of Berlin, become ever more visible and tangible for more and more Charlottenburgers, Berliners and visitors to the city.

Prof. Martin Rennert Berlin University of the Arts, President

Fraunhofer HHI was founded in Charlottenburg almost 90 years ago. From the very outset the association between Fraunhofer and the Technische Universität, or Technische Hochschule as it was then known, was of great importance. The value of this association remains as strong today as ever. Many TU students work for Fraunhofer and complete their final theses here with us. I myself teach at the TU and head the university’s Media Technology Group. The exchange of ideas and collaboration with the various universities and businesses within Campus Charlottenburg continues to be of great significance for all our research staff.

We specifically chose to locate to Berlin Charlottenburg to benefit from the synergies created by the proximity to the universities and our clients. Our focus on innovation and high tech means that an intensive communication and cooperation with the scientific system is indispensable for us. Being part of the Campus provides us with valuable impetus for our work as an intermediary organization between politics, research and business. We greatly value the fruitful cooperation which we enjoy on a number of levels with our innovative partners here. This scope for cooperation is a real advantage of Campus Charlottenburg.

Berlin Zoo attracts more than three million visitors per year, making it one of Berlin’s most visited attractions and one of the most famous zoos in the world. Being located so close to Campus Charlottenburg, which, with its educational institutes and diverse partners, forms the heart of the City West, is ideal for the Zoo. The resulting synergies and the Zoo’s successful cooperation with Campus Charlottenburg serve to greatly strengthen the science location in the City West.
