CTWRT Cyprus 09 Preview Cyprus Rally ( March 12 -15 , 2009) – Pr eview New colours, but an identical objective The special feature of this year's Cyprus Rally, the third round of the 2009 FIA World Rally Championship, is that it is a mixed-surface event, with one day of asphalt competition and two days on loose stages. Sébastien Loeb/Daniel Elena and Dani Sordo/Marc Marti will be looking to continue Citroën Total World Rally Team's winning sequence in their Citroën C4 WRCs which will feature a new livery. The island of Cyprus is situated at the eastern end of the Mediterranean and featured on the World Rally Championship seven times between 2000 and 2006 when its twisty, rocky stages earned it a reputation for being the slowest of the series. To mark its return to the WRC fold, the event has resuscitated the principle of a mixed asphalt/gravel format which was last used by the Rallye Sanremo in 1996. This year's visit to Cyprus will kick off with a day on asphalt followed by two legs on gravel. Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena, who won this event three times (in 2004, 2005 and 2006) from four starts, will clearly be targeting further success this time round. If they succeed, it will take the five-time World Champions' score to 50 world class wins. The Franco-Monegasque pair knows only too well, however, that victory can by no means be taken for granted. "So much has changed in the space of three years that you've really got to treat this as a new rally," believes Daniel Elena. "We obviously used to drive on the island's asphalt roads to get out to the stages and we thought at the time that this island could put on a great asphalt rally! The organisers have ensured us that this year's gravel stages won't be as twisty or as slow as they were in the past. And we need to take the weather into account, too. It could well rain in Cyprus, even in March." After initially being favourable to the idea of a mixed-surface rally, Sébastien Loeb is dubitative about the event's format and the requirement to contest the first day on Pirelli Scorpion gravel tyres: "It's a shame to have only done things by half. We will be competing on asphalt with ill-suited brakes, tyres and suspension. The balance of our C4 WRC is still very good with this set-up, but we are aware that we will need to look after our tyres to avoid punctures. It will probably be nice for the spectators to see the cars sliding, but I don't think it will be all that stimulating for the drivers. The fact that we are starting the weekend on asphalt won't encourage us to attack, either. What will be the point in being first overall on Friday evening. That will mean facing road sweeping duty on the next day's loose stages? That said, this is not a strategy we will be able to afford to adopt because we will be starting the weekend first on the road. Our objective will therefore be to build up as big a lead as possible on the opening day." Dani Sordo has only contested the Cyprus Rally on one previous occasion (2006), which is two times less than his co-driver Marc Marti who started this event twice alongside Carlos Sainz. As was the case in Ireland and Norway, the Spanish pair will be out to score as many Manufacturers' points as possible. "It promises to be a tough rally," warns Dani. "Despite the fact that asphalt is seen as our favourite type of surface, the regulations concerning the specification of the cars is likely to have a big influence. We have tested on asphalt with gravel tyres and our C4 WRC was as strong as ever. We worked on the suspension to adapt it to sealed surfaces, but it's notably the brakes and tyres which stand to suffer the most, especially if the weather is hot." Citroën Sport has been renamed Citroën Racing and the cars will accordingly sport new livery from now on. On February 5, the make revealed its new brand identity which builds on the dynamism generated by the success of the new models it has launched over the past 10 years. As far as the Citroën Total World Rally Team is concerned, the most apparent change concerns the livery of the C4 WRC which incorporates a higher proportion of white. The new colour scheme was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show. Three questions to… Xavier Chardon Marketing and Communication Director, Citroën Citroën took the wraps off its new brand identity on February 5. What are the main aspects of this change? "Ninety years after its creation, Citroën is beginning a fresh page in its history. Despite the difficult economic situation, the current shifts in the way we go motoring and the new relationship that exists between brands and their consumers, Citroën is taking none of these factors passively. On the contrary, the brand has taken active measures to forge a new identity. Our objective is to build on the dynamism that has marked Citroën over the past 10 years or so with a view to giving added value to the brand and providing a springboard for our range. This is an all-embracing project which includes a new brand identity, a new approach to customer relations and a new product line, the DS line. The 2009 Geneva Motor Show Salon gave the public its first chance to see tangible evidence of this new dynamic approach and to discover the DS Inside concept." What does the 'Créative Technologie' slogan say about Citroën? Citroën has always stood for a combination of creativity and technology. Citroën has never sought technological prowess for its own sake; its focus has always been on developing technologies that benefit the customer. The 'Créative Technologie' slogan sums up the brand's identity, and our involvement in rallying stems from the same philosophy. Citroën Racing's creativity has seen the C4 WRC notch up an enviable record of individual event wins and world titles. Citroën Racing, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena have indeed achieved a great deal of success in recent years. How much have they contributed to Citroën's brand's image? Citroën's involvement in rallying has played an integral part in the dynamism we have witnessed over the past 10 years. The C4 WRC has won two-thirds of the rallies it has contested across the world, on asphalt, dirt and snow alike! This one statistic says a great deal about the performance, reliability and versatility of our products. And how could we not associate Sébastien and Daniel with this success? They are two straightforward guys who are available, determined and self-starters. We couldn't wish for better ambassadors." • Press Information
PRESS INFORMATION HIRVONEN POWERS TO WRC CENTURY IN TURKEY KEMER, 15 June 2008 - Ford today claimed a record-breaking 100th consecutive points finish in the FIA World Rally Championship with the Focus RS World Rally Car. It became the first manufacturer since the launch of the championship in 1973 to reach a century of successive scores (see below) on the Rally of Turkey thanks to Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen claiming their second win of the FIA World Rally Championship season in a Ford Focus RS World Rally Car, and team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila just 7,9 sec behind in another Focus RS as Ford extended its lead in the manufacturers' series to nine points. After dominating Friday's opening leg to hold first and second, Hirvonen and Latvala deliberately eased their pace in the final few metres to drop down the leaderboard to gain better road conditions yesterday. A lower start position meant they avoided the huge disadvantage of being first and second on roads covered by slippery loose gravel. Instead, they benefited from the cleaning process of the cars ahead, who swept stones from the surface to leave a cleaner and faster line on which to attack. Ford's Finns rocketed back to first and second yesterday morning and attacked hard to build as big a lead as possible over championship rival Sébastien Loeb, who swept the roads, in third. Hirvonen and Latvala had the unwanted 'cleaning' role today, but the buffer was big enough to hold off a determined charge from Loeb during the final 31, 03 km speed test to claim the team's second 1-2 of the season.

EVENT SUMMARY Flodin takes GB win as Aigner becomes P-WRC Champion Swedish driver Patrik Flodin and co-driver Göran Bergsten (Subaru) scored the first P-WRC victory of their career on the eighth and final round of the 2008 FIA Production Car World Rally Championship, Wales Rally GB, after a tough battle with fellow Swede Patrik Sandell in his Peugeot 207 S2000. But a twist on the final stage saw Sandell stop with engine woes and second was adopted by a perfectly poised Andreas Aigner (Mitsubishi) whose finish was enough to clinch his debut P-WRC title, the first Austrian to win since Manfred Stohl in 2000. Aigner’s second place saw him eventually finish two points ahead of title rival Juho Hänninen (FIN, Mitsubishi) as the Finn, who retired on day one, was forced to watch from the sidelines. One of the most dominating things about this rally was the high rate of attrition as a result of the challenging wintery conditions. By the end of day one alone, seven P-WRC crews had retired and by the end of day two, a further seven crews had been sidelined. Mark Higgins (GB, Subaru) set the pace by winning the first stage of the rally and put himself into the lead ahead of fellow Brit and British Rally Championship (BRC) rival Guy Wilks (Mitsubishi).

  • The Australasian Society for Motorsports Medicine and Rescue
Volume 2, Issue 7 December 2010 The Australasian Society for Motorsports Medicine and Rescue Contents Race control Motorsport review Recent race results Caught by the cameras Race control So another year of motor sporting draws to a close. The major categories have completed their seasons with some of the closest racing seen in the final events. Perhaps the persistent fiddling with the rules and rewards systems is paying off. The F1 had everyone madly working out the various permutations by which their favoured driver could finish on the top step, right up until the last lap in Bahrain. Loeb took his seventh World Rally championship title in his home town of Hagenot, in France, with two events left on the calendar. However, the WRC still ended on a nail-biter with the rising Sebastian Ogier challenging a much more consistent Jari-Matti Latvalla and an impressively resurgent Petter Solberg for second place. With a very satisfying end to the season, we also bid farewell to the current class of WRC cars, which will be replaced with shorter wheel base, 1600cc turbo engined car in 2011. Citroen will run a DS3, BP Ford a Fiesta RS and Mini will provide a third manufacturer in selected events with its Countryman model. The V8s finished their season in Sydney at the Homebush Bay circuit and was again replete with carnage and position changes, right up until the final lap, where Shane Van Gisbergen ran out of fuel while running in first place, yet managed to coast across the finish line in in third.
