It is “ethics." 1 – Martin Heidegger Senne van den Berg Abstract: Martin Heidegger’s 1947 Letter on Humanism takes up a significant place in the oeuvre of the German philosopher. This important text is often discussed for two topics: Heidegger’s discussion of humanism, and his discussion of ethics as ‘abode.’ However, these two topics are being discussed isolated from each other, which obscures the inherent relation there is between the two for Heidegger. This paper will show that Heidegger’s discussion of humanism in the Letter is decisively shaped by his ethical preoccupations. I. Heidegger, humanism and ethics Martin Heidegger’s 19472 Letter on Humanism takes up a significant place in the oeuvre of the German philosopher.

    Derrida and Heidegger in France TOM ROCKMORE, Duquesne University For a long period after the war, roughly from the rise of structuralism in the 1950s until the publication of Victor FarIas's Heideggerand Nazism in 1987, Martin Heidegger played a crucial role as the single most important thinker of "French" philosophy.1 In recent years, Jacques Derrida, in some ways a quintessentially French thinker, has become, with Hans-Georg Gadamer, one of Heidegger's two most important exponents. Heidegger's special role in French philosophy is attributable to a number of circumstances, including the tireless advocacy of Jean Beaufret, who, more than any other person, promoted Heidegger's position and defended it against criticism, especially against criticism motivated by Heidegger's turn toward Nazism. After Beaufret's death in 1982, Derrida increasingly assumed Beaufret's mantle as Heidegger's most important French proponent. Derrida's theory emerged within a generally Heideggerian atmosphere. Although never wholly uncritical, he has contributed in important ways to maintaining a French reading of Heidegger. Since the resurgence of interest in Heidegger's Nazism and the subsequent, rapid decline of Heidegger in France, Derrida has assumed a double role as both critic and staunch defender of a certain French view of Heidegger. This paper considers the complex interaction between Denida and Heidegger in France. Heidegger's effect on his students takes different forms. Many limit themselves to exegesis of the master's thought, while others develop ideas that are often influenced, even strongly influenced, by Heidegger's position. Gadamer, who attended Heidegger's lectures as a student, was unable to break free from his master's influence for many years.

    Journal of French Philosophy Volume 17, Number 1, Spring 2007 Slaughterbench of Humanisms: The 1987 Heidegger Affair in Intellectual-Historical Perspective Stefanos Geroulanos In the fall of 1987, one of the most significant affairs in recent intellectual history erupted in France when the unknown Chilean writer Victor Farias published a well-researched but philosophically unimpressive book on Martin Heidegger’s Nazism. To publishers abroad, notably in Germany, the volume rang a hollow bell, and remained unprinted, as debates on existentialism, Heidegger’s engagement with the Nazi party, and his continuing political position in the fifties lay in the past.1 But in France, despite a certain academic awareness of Heidegger’s Nazi engagement, the effect was very different:2 Farias struck a nerve, and suddenly the intellectual milieu erupted into furious polemics. This 1987 Heidegger Affair has long been read as the final curtain for a movement that lent support to several epistemological ruptures in French philosophy (according to some of the more positive accounts) or flourished as an uncritical and pretentious audience for Heidegger (in the less generous ones). Yet although it provided a number of signs indicating shifts in intellectual tendencies, the affair has never been seriously treated as a barometer for the recent past of French thought.3 The present essay attempts to offer a necessarily schematic intellectual- historical description of the 1987 affair as an intellectual event emerging with the rise of a neo-humanist politics that

    Introduction David Pettigrew and François Raffoul In May 2002, the annual meeting of the North American Heidegger Confer- ence took place at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.The conference, entitled “Heidegger and France,” was inspired by Dominique Jani- caud’s opus magnum Heidegger en France, a remarkable work that chronicles the reception of Heidegger over the course of more than seven decades. Dominique Janicaud was one of two invited keynote speakers at the confer- ence. Tragically, he was to die unexpectedly in August of the same year. This book, drawn from many of the papers presented at the Heidegger conference along with other invited contributions, is dedicated to his memory. While Dominique Janicaud’s book Heidegger en France is a groundbreak- ing intellectual history of that reception, a radical and bold intertwining of Historie and Geschichte (much of Janicaud’s book is a reconstruction of the his- tory of the reception of Heidegger’s work, following a chronological order from the late twenties and early thirties until the end of the century1), French Interpretations of Heidegger: An Exceptional Reception undertakes a philosophical engagement of the work of a number of the most significant and most cre- ative figures of that reception. Dominique Janicaud’s own essay,“Toward the End of the ‘French Exception’?,” delivered at the Heidegger Conference, serves as an introduction to this volume.     Being at the Beginning: Heidegger's Interpretation of Heraclitus Daniel O. Dahlstrom Herr Schulz, wenn ich nachdenke, dann ist es manchmal so, als ob Heraklit danebensteht. – Heidegger to Walter Schulz1 In Heidegger's lexicon 'being' usually designates what, in this or that historical epoch, it means for any entity to be. Hence, it is not to be confused with a term designating any entity or set of entities, though it necessarily stands in an essential relation to human beings, as creatures uniquely capable of differentiating beings from what gives them meaning. But the meaning of being, so construed, must also be distinguished from what grounds or constitutes its essential correlation with human beings. Heidegger labels this ground the Ereignis.2 He also refers to it as Seynsgeschichte to signal the fact that, as part of this Ereignis, the history of interpretations of being constitutes and, in that sense, underlies our way of being and understanding being. In the process, this still-unfolding history takes hold of us in the ways we make this destiny our own, mindlessly or not. Indeed, in our preoccupation with particular beings (including the metaphysical preoccupation with them insofar as they exist, i.e., with the being of beings), this history easily escapes our notice. In the period from 1935 to 1945 Heidegger attempts to develop a kind of thinking that could become mindful of this history and thereby free from it (a 3/24/10 Being at the Beginning 2 freedom, it bears adding, that calls, by no means for forgetting or dismissing it, but for paying final respects to it).3 Essential to this history and no less party to it are salient ways of thinking that privilege some entity or another (God, nature, matter, humans, scientifically determined reality) as the key to the meaning of 'being.' By thus obscuring the difference between being and beings, these ways of thinking unknowingly contribute to concealing – and waylaying any concern for – the grounds of that difference.

Certainly, in this post-war era (where Sartre’s 1945 Paris lecture ‘Existentialism Is a Humanism’ sought to defend the ethical credentials of existentialism in the face of the charge of nihihsm) and more so today in the wake of the Black Notebooks scandal, Heidegger’s philosophy falters on ethical grounds as on political complications.

    Martin Heidegger: “The Letter on Humanism” A series of lectures by Paul Livingston, Villanova University March 2, 2005 The Letter on Humanism, written in 1947 in response to questions circulating about the relationship of Heidegger’s philosophy of Being to humanism, Christianity, Marxism, and the new “philosophy of existence” expounded by Sartre, Jaspers, and others, has been called Heidegger’s “greatest effort.” It was written at a time of great personal struggle for Heidegger: he had just been indefinitely banned from teaching following the Nazi war-crimes hearings, and he had undergone a kind of emotional breakdown as a result. Nevertheless, the Letter on Humanism virtually catalogues the most important strands of Heidegger’s entire later philosophy – the meaning of the history of Being, the way Heidegger sees to the re-awakening of that history, its relation to the philosophical tradition, the meaning of action, the role of technology, art, and language in the historical destiny of Being, and above all the need of a new thinking to prepare that destiny. The essay contains some of Heidegger’s most memorable language. In it, we can see especially clearly the role of reflection about language in preparing a new consideration of Being that will make the leap outside the tradition of metaphysics, which has hitherto determined all of our language. The quest for a new language will be so important to Heidegger that he will even spell important words, like Being, in antiquated and strange ways, to show that he uses them outside the closure of metaphysics. “Thinking accomplishes the relation of Being to the essence of man.
