Across the spectrum from young people to elders, Brooklyn Community Pride Center enables our community to actively participate in positive, life-affirming activities. We offer a distinctive choice for residents of New York City’s largest borough to celebrate, heal, learn, create, organize, relax, socialize, and play. Last year, we assisted over 10,000 unique visitors or contacts from the community, with more and more people stopping by every day. In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we moved most of our programs and services online. During the first three months of the pandemic, we saw as many virtual clients as we saw in-person visitors during the preceding nine months. We expect to see this growth in services continue to grow as we adapt to blended virtual and in-person programming. 75% of all unrestricted money raised is put into program services. 21% supports administration and operation with 4% into development efforts. The Community Leadership Awards recognize people and organizations who have made significant contributions to the LGBTQ+ community of Brooklyn. Recent honorees include: Abdul Muid, Founder and Principal of Ivey North; Ryann Holmes of bklyn boihood; dapperQ; Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President; Chubb; Jasmine Thomas, Citi Community Development; Marty Markowitz, former Brooklyn Borough President; and more. This year, in response to the pandemic, the awardees will be celebrated through a series of professionally produced videos distributed through social media backed by paid digital promotion. These videos will be short and social media friendly, with a conversational tone, and will highlight the impact the award recipient has had on Brooklyn’s LGBTQ+ community.

Astella will collaborate with the NYC Department of Sanitation, the Coney Island Board of Trade, and Mermaid Ave. merchants to provide these services. Members of the Coney Island Board of Trade, in which Astella helped to revitalize and provides technical assistance, have noted that while most merchants keep the sidewalk area in front of their stores free of liter according to city law, additional liter and sidewalk dirt and stains accumulate throughout the remainder of the day. In addition, according to a survey of Mermaid Ave. merchants conducted by an Astella intern in 2010, cleanliness of Mermaid Ave. was cited as the number one concern among merchants on Mermaid Ave. A cleaner commercial corridor will inspire confidence and pride in the neighborhood, provide a welcoming environment for shoppers, a boost for Mermaid Ave.

  • Elected-Affiliated Nonprofits: Closing the Public Integrity Gap Richard Briffault1
February 10, 2021 draft Elected-Affiliated Nonprofits: Closing the Public Integrity Gap Richard Briffault1 I. Introduction In December 2013, shortly after winning election as New York City’s mayor – and some weeks before he was sworn into office – Bill de Blasio announced the formation of a “star-studded” public relations campaign that would help him secure the New York state legislature’s support for the funding of a centerpiece of his successful election campaign – universal pre-kindergarten for New York City’s children. The campaign would be run by a newly formed § 501(c)(4) tax-exempt corporation – the Campaign for One New York (CONY) -- which would raise donations from individuals, corporations, unions, and advocacy organizations to build public support and lobby Albany for “universal pre-K.”2 Over the next two-and-one-half years, CONY raised and spent over four million dollars, initially in support of universal pre-K, and then, after that goal was achieved, to promote another plank in the mayor’s 2013 campaign platform – changes to the city’s land use and zoning rules to increase affordable housing. The mayor played an active role in fund- raising for CONY, which received huge donations from real estate interests, unions and other groups that did business with the city, and he participated in its activities, including 1 Joseph P. Chamberlain Professor of Legislation, Columbia University School of Law. The author was chair of the New York City Conflicts of Interest Board (COIB) during some of the time period addressed in this article. The facts discussed in this article are drawn entirely from public reports and do not reflect any information the author gained from his COIB service.

  • Coney Island? by Eleanor A. Miller
A Brave “New” Coney Island? by Eleanor A. Miller The actors ran barefoot on a sandy beach and projected their lines over the cries of seagulls. The audience sat in 1,500 white folding chairs on a boardwalk across from a mural of Henry Hudson’s landing on Coney Island. This was not a typical production of The Tempest. Brave New World Repertory Theatre, which takes its name from one of the most famous lines in the play, staged Shake- speare’s tropical classic on the final Saturday and Sunday of September—outside, on the boardwalk and beach of Brooklyn’s Coney Island. For director Claire Beckman, it was natural, considering historical events, to stage what she calls “Shakespeare’s American play” outside the New York City Aquarium and on the adjacent beach. “Four hundred years ago, on September 6, 1609, Henry Hudson landed on this shore,” she told the audience at the first performance. That same year, “the Sea Venture smashed against the islands of Bermuda,” Beckman recounted, recalling the English sailing vessel that was shipwrecked on its way to the Virginia Colony, the first permanent English settlement in North America. Stories of the Sea Venture reached England in 1610, and were the inspiration for Shakespeare’s play. Prospero and the ocean. Photos by Eleanor Miller. “It’s the quadricentennial of these two voyages to the new world, to the brave new world where we all live,” said Beckman. Beckman, who co-founded Brave New World as a Brooklyn-based theater company with actors drawn entirely from local talent, envisioned staging this play for years, ever since she and her husband met when both were acting in the play in 1983 in Vermont.Originally, she imagined dumping sand all over a stage indoors—but soon found an unusual, better idea.

  • City & State Grimm Scenarios
City & State Grimm Scenarios With Rep. Michael Grimm facing an indictment, there appears to be only one way for him to get off the ballot if Republicans want to run someone else By Jerry H. Goldfeder | Apr 28, 2014 | The anticipated indictment of Rep. Michael Grimm has raised questions about his viability as a candidate and the chances of his Democratic challenger, former New York City Councilman Domenic Recchia. It also has prompted a whirlwind of speculation about if and how he could be replaced as the Republican Party’s nominee. I will leave the political prognosticating for another day. Here I will address the ballot issues. Two sets of rules come into play: New York Election Law and the United States Constitution. According to New York law, designating petitions for the Republican line were due on April 10, and Grimm duly filed them. He had until four days later, April 14, to “decline” the nomination. Candidates do that from time to time for a variety of reasons, usually because they want their Committee to Fill Vacancies (political allies and supporters) to choose a replacement. Declination is rare; in any event, Grimm did not opt to do so. Moreover, no one submitted petitions to run against him in the Republican primary. Grimm is the Republican nominee. Assuming, however, that Congressman Grimm decides to spend his time fighting federal fraud charges and give the Republican Party a chance to run an alternative candidate, could he take his name off the ballot? Unlikely. Generally for state offices, if one moves out of the state or is convicted of a felony, a candidate is no longer eligible for public office.
