Andreas Aarflot, Hans Nielsen Hauge: His Life and Message (Minneapolis:Augsburg Publishing House, 1979). Reviewed by Donald Dean Smeeton. This book is a cistern from which one might draw many kinds of water, but all are portable. The person os Norwegian descent will find material to satisfy his thirst for his spiritual roots. The historian of theology will taste an often-needed balance to the superficial judgment that eighteenth century Lutheranism was only rationalistic orthodoxy. The advocate of lay leadership will relish this practical paradigm of the lay activist and, of course, the person with pneumatological interests will drink deeply from the creative thinking and courageous life of this preacher-theologian. Although Hans Nielsen Hauge is not widely known outside Scandi- navia, he was the most important revivalist-not in the pejorative sense of an evangelist, but in the truer sense of one who provokes spiritual awakenings-in the history of Norwegian Christianity. Hauge dated his commitment to ministry to a profound, estatic experience which Aarflot suggests "had the character of a baptism in the Spirit as was known later in the Pentecostal movement" (p. 22). Although without formal theological training, Hauge synthesized liturgical Lutheranism and pietistic practice with limited accommoda- tions to the liberation of the Enlightenment. Even if one doubts that Hauge was influenced by the Enlightenment to the extent indicated by Aarflot, Hauge definitely combined the tenets of orthodox theology with the flame of spiritual fire. -

The present study has been based as far as possible on primary sources such as protocols, letters, legal documents, and articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers from the nineteenth century. A contextual-comparative approach was employed to evaluate the objectivity of a given source. Secondary sources have also been consulted for interpretation and as corroborating evidence, especially when no primary sources were available. The study concludes that the Pietist revival ignited by the Norwegian Lutheran lay preacher, Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771-1824), represented the culmination of the sixteenth- century Reformation in Norway, and the forerunner of the Adventist movement in that country. -

Hymnody and Liturgics MUSC205 Fall Semester, 2018 Tuesday, Thursday, 10:30-11:20 Prof. Dennis Marzolf YFAC 209 [email protected] 507-317-9584 Proposed Syllabus, August 3, 2018 Course Description: The history and development of hymnody and liturgical forms in the Western Church, especially as they relate to the Lutheran Divine Service, pedagogy and devotion. Special emphasis on the chorale and hymnody of the traditions of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The course integrates the academic disciplines of music, history and theology. Course objectives: Students will demonstrate a conversant knowledge of hymnody in the liturgical life of the church, and articulate the unique doctrinal posture of the Lutheran church as it is reflected in the liturgy of the church. Students are invited to grow in appreciation of the liturgy as a means of Gospel proclamation and teaching in the church, school and home. Hopefully all the students will discover some new “friends” in the world of the Christian worship as a result of this class. By the end of the term students will be able to: 1. identify the four liturgical blueprints of the western Christian tradition, and 2. relate the practices of song to those blueprints (How is the song of the Office different from the Mass, for instance…) 3. explain the relationship between the rule of faith (doctrine) and the way of prayer (liturgy). They will also be able to 4. identify the major themes, personalities, and dates of various eras and events in the history of Christian worship; (Music Outcome 5, religion Outcome 3) 5. describe their longterm impact upon the patterns and content of the liturgy and hymnody of the church. -

HISTORY MINUTE presented by Mike Zapf January 11, 2015 Johann Samuel Schwerdtfeger His life story is an example of how failures and disappointment can be transforming for the best. A life of purpose through faith. New Jerusalem's first minister, Johann Samuel Schwerdtfeger, the son of a pharmaceutical chemist, was born June 4th, 1734 in Burgbernheim, in northern Bavaria, and studied theology at the Friedrich-Alexander University at Erlangen, near Nuernberg. Apparently he was an indifferent student and broke off his studies before earning a diploma. He entered the University of Erlangen to study theology but in 1753 he discontinued his studies and left for America. After wandering Europe, he became prey of redemptioners who recruited and transported him to the America. In exchange for his "free" passage he was bought for five years' service by Evangelical Lutheran Church in York, Pennsylvania, which was interested in a man lettered in Divinity and Law. He received ordination and became their pastor. He eventually fell into disfavor with some of the church hierarchy primarily because of a letter in which he divided all the Lutherans in York into Sadducees, Pharisees, Halle Pietists, and Old Lutherans—counting himself an Old Lutheran. In 1758 he served the Palatine Lutherans at Earltown (New Holland) in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and married Dorothea Schwabe, the daughter of a parish elder. It was here that he learned to know Reverend Henry M. Muhlenberg and relaxed his criticism of Pietism. In 1762 he petitioned for and received admission as a qualified Lutheran minister from the Pennsylvania Ministerium. His credentials were enhanced by formal testimonials in Latin from the university authorities in Germany and from the German court preacher in London. -

Religion Education in Norway: Tension or Harmony between Human Rights and Christian Cultural Heritage? BENGT-OVE ANDREASSEN University of Tromsø Abstract Both research and public and scholarly debate on religious education (RE) in Norway have mostly revolved around the subject in primary and secondary school called Christianity, Religion and Ethics (KRL) (later renamed Religion, Philosophies of Life and Ethics, RLE), not least due to the criticisms raised by the UN’s Human Rights Com- mittee in 2004 and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in 2007 of the Norwegian model for RE in primary and secondary schools. The RE subject in upper secondary school, however, is hardly ever mentioned. The same applies to teacher education. This article therefore aims at providing some insight into how RE has developed in the Norwegian educational system overall, ranging from primary and secondary to upper secondary and including the different forms of teacher education. Keywords: religious education, teacher education, educational system, human rights, Norway Historical Background The development of religious education (RE) in Norway can be described in three main perspectives which link with historical periods: firstly, the Chris- tian education policy in the period from 1736 (when confirmation was made obligatory for all people) to 1860; secondly, the gradual secularisation of the school from 1860, as new subjects supplemented and challenged Christian- ity as the main curricular focus in schools, to 1969, when a new Education Act stated that RE should no longer should be confessionally rooted in Christianity. When the first Norwegian immigrants entered the U.S. in the middle of the 19th century, there were not enough Lutheran pastors to minister to the spiritual needs of the people. Some of these immigrants resorted to a practice that had been used in Norway, that of using lay-preachers. This created problems because of a lack of proper theological training. The result was the teaching of false doctrine. Some thought more highly of the lay-preachers than they did of the ordained clergy. Consequently clergy were often viewed with a discerning eye and even despised. This was one of the earliest struggles within the Norwegian Synod. Further controversies involved whether the local congregation is the only form in which the church exists. Another facet of the controversy involves whether or not the ministry includes only the pastoral office; whether or not only ordained clergy do the ministry; whether teachers in the Lutheran schools are involved in the ministry; and whether or not any Christian can participate in the public ministry. Is a missionary, who serves on behalf of the entire church body, a pastor? If only the local congregation can call a pastor, then a missionary cannot be a pastor because he serves the entire church body in establishing new congregations. -

Hans Nielsen Hauge: a Catalyst of Literacy in Norway

HANS NIELSEN HAUGE: A CATALYST OF LITERACY IN NORWAY Linda Haukland, University of Nordland In this article, I examine the role Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771–1824) played in encouraging literacy in the Norwegian peasant society in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, an aspect of his ministry never before discussed. This poorly educated son of a peasant broke the unwritten rule of never publishing texts for a large readership without the necessary educational skills. Thus he opened up a new literate space where the common person could express him- or herself on paper. Hauge printed around 40 different texts, 14 of them books, in a language the peasants could understand. This inspired his followers not only to read, but also to write, mainly letters to Hauge and to Haugeans in other parts of Norway. Some even became authors. Women played a central role in this wave of literacy spreading throughout the country. Based on Hauge’s original texts, I present some crucial aspects of his mentality and show how his ministry served as a catalyst to the growth of literacy among peasants during the period. NB!
