It was introduced to the Black Sea (1940s), the coastlines of Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey (1959 to 1972), and Brittany (1997). The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) Trawl Survey Group collected the first specimen in the United States in 1998 at Hampton Roads, Virginia. Since then, over 18,000 specimens as well as egg cases (resembling small mats of yellow shag carpet) have been collected in the lower Chesapeake Bay.

Subject of study were Pb, Cd, As, Hg, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Fe etc. and their content in seawater, sediment, algae and various benthic organisms. Available data from the Bulgarian coast and also from different Black Sea areas were presented. Key words: heavy metals, Black sea, algae, mussels, benthos Introduction The Black Sea is the largest semi-enclosed sea in the world and widely perceived to be heavily polluted. Together with Azov Sea, it covers an area of 462000 km2. Its east to west dimension is 1150 km and from north to south is 610 km. The depth of water approaches 2200 m and is virtually isolated from other seas (Readman et al., 2002). The Black Sea is surrounded by six countries located in Europe and Asia: Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine (Fig. 1). To the south and southwest, the Strait of Bosphorus connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, which in turn, is connected to the Aegean Sea and Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Dardanelles. To the north it is open to the Azov Sea through Kerch (Strezov, 2012). In fact, the Black Sea is influenced by 17 countries, 13 capital cities and some 160 million people.

Veined rapa whelks (Rapana venosa, Muricidae) lay egg masses that release planktonic veliger larvae from May through August in Chesapeake Bay, USA. Two groups of veliger larvae hatched from egg masses during June and August 2000 were cultured in the laboratory. Egg mass incubation time (time from deposition to hatch) ranged from 18–26 d at water temperatures between 22°C and 27°C.

Identification Rapana venosa is a large, 9-16 cm shell length, species with a heavy, strongly sculptured shell. Specimens up to 17.5 cm have been recorded in the Black Sea (Micu et al., 2008). This record represents a transoceanic range expansion for this carnivorous species. This species has previously been introduced to the Black Sea, Adriatic Sea, and Aegean Sea. Ballast water transport of larval stages from the eastern Mediterranean or Black Sea is the suspected vector of introduction into the Chesapeake Bay; 650 adult specimens in the size range 68-165 mm shell length (SL) have been collected from hard sand bottom in depths ranging from 5 to 20 m at salinities of 18-28 ppt. The absence of small individuals from local collections is probably related to bias in collection methods. Age of the specimens could not be determined. This record is the first for the North Sea and The Netherlands. In September, a second veined whelk ended up in the nets of an Eurokotter in the central southern North Sea (the wider Thames estuary) and in November a third one was caught off Scheveningen again. These records - together with reports of more specimens occasionally being fished - indicate that this ferocious invasive East Asian gastropod has established a (small) population in the North Sea. This paper describes the three records, discusses the ways Rapana may have reached the North Sea and the possible impact on the marine ecosystem and local aquacultures of bivalve shells. The single­ shelled mollusk, \iisually similar to the native whelks (Busycon carica, B. sinistrum, Busycotyjnts canaliwlatus, Fig. l , turned up during a routine Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) trawl survey on the lower James River this summer. A gastropod mollusk is a single-shelled mollusk and is often ·eferred to, for simplicity's sake, as a snail. VIMS is interested in any sightings of this large snail in Virginia waters; these reports will aid scientists in developing a model which will define potential impacts. Figure 1. Non-native rapa whelk Physical Characteristics R . venosa can be distinguished from the native whelk by three pronounced characteristics: small teeth along the edge of the shell, orange coloration along the inner edge of the shell, and a pronounced channel (columella). Notice, also, the ribbing at the lower end of the shell (Fig. 2). The coloring of the outer shell can vary from gray to red brown, with dark brown dashes on the spiral ribs. The animal can grow to be quite large; VIMS scientists located a record of 18 .3cm shell height (7.2 inches) from Taiwan, and 12.1cm (4.8 inches) from the Black Sea. The size of snails being found in Virginia waters is between 10-15cm (4-6 inches). Range R. venosa is native to Japanese waters.

Rapana venosa, an invasive gastropod reported for the Río de la Plata estuary since 1998, represents a serious risk to the shellfish fauna with economic value of the region. In this contribution new records in the Uruguayan coastal zone of the easternmost distribution limit are presented. Compared to 2004–2005, the mussel bed cover in 2012 decreased by 75.6%, the maximum depth of occurrence reduced from 22–25 m to 10–12 m, and total biomass declined by 44.6%. There was a concurrent decrease in abundance of demersal fishes dependent upon mussels as prey. We concluded that the invasive rapa whelk has had a detrimental impact on this demersal ecosystem. The possible influence of the introduced ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi on the two mollusc’s populations has also been discussed.
