Winter Olympics Code Breaker Winter Olympics Code Breaker Amazing Winter Olympic Stories • In the 1988 Winter Olympics, Jamaica entered its first team in the bobsleigh, which was amazing as they had to practise without snow in Jamaica! It was such a great story that it inspired the 1993 film ‘Cool Runnings’. • From 1929 until 1988, Team GB had no ski jumpers; that was until Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards came along in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada. He came last but was a British ski jump record holder, going on to become a TV personality and stunt skier. In 2016, the film ‘Eddie the Eagle’ was released telling his story. • Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are two of Team GB’s most famous Winter Olympic stars, having won the gold medal in 1984 with their ‘Bolero’ ice dance. They were world champions three times, British Champions seven times and both have MBEs. They now underpin the TV show ‘Dancing on Ice’. Mollye Peters Northwestern University SHOULD THE USOC BID ON THE 2024 OLYMPIC GAMES? 2 Overview The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has not hosted an Olympic Games since the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and it has not put in a bid for the Olympic Games since the Chicago 2016 bid led to a loss in the first round, even though it had the best technical evaluation (Berkes, 2009). In fact, the New York City bid for the 2012 Games also resulted in a loss in the first round of bidding (USOC Encourages Chicago To Bid For 2024 Summer Olympics, But City Hall Says No, Thanks, 2013). Several factors went into these tremendous losses for the USOC. One reason was the revenue-sharing conflict between the USOC and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) (Associated Press, 2012). With that issue seemingly solved and at bay, the USOC can feel more comfortable in the bidding process on some level. However, the other complications that have recently been brought into the spotlight have caused other National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to not bid, and even pull out of the Olympic bidding process (Austrian Olympic Committee, German Olympic Sports Confederation, Swedish Olympic Committee, & Swiss Olympic Association, 2014). The IOC is in discussions of changing aspects of the bidding process in order to bring in more bids, from bigger, better cities. The question reflected in this paper is that given the history of the USOC and the Olympic bidding process, as well as the bidding process complications and the possible changes to come within the bidding process, should the USOC bid on the 2024 Olympic Games? Furthermore, if the USOC was to bid, what city has the strongest chance of winning the bid? Currently, the USOC is vetting US cities for the 2024 Olympic Games.

    Christopher Dean Christopher Colin Dean was born in July 1958 in Calverton, Nottinghamshire, about ten miles from the city of Nottingham. His father, Colin, was a coal miner all his life. Chris first stepped on to the ice at the age of 10 after receiving a pair of skates for Christmas. He was instantly hooked; mesmerised by the grace and athleticism of the figure skaters that he watched. He took lessons outside school hours, working with Ken Babbington, Len Saywood and Pat Beat at the old Nottingham Ice Stadium. At 14 he began competing with ice partner Sandra Elson and despite enjoying significant success for a couple of years (British Junior Dance champions in 1974), Chris and Sandra went their separate ways. Shortly afterwards, he began skating with another local girl, Jayne Torvill. Meanwhile, Chris was training to be a policeman, joining the Nottingham Police Force straight from school in 1974. Chris and Jayne had been paired up by coach Janet Sawbridge at the Nottingham Ice Stadium. They enjoyed success in several national and international competitions, winning in Oberstdorf and coming third in the British Championships in 1977. In 1979, they switched coaches to Betty Callaway. The progress they had made as a dancing pair was confirmed by a fifth place finish in the Winter Olympics of 1980 at Lake Placid, USA. They were placed fourth in the World Championships and won their first British Champions in late 1980, a feat that they achieved for six successive years. Chris resigned from the police force in 1980, enabling him to concentrate on skating full time.

    PREFACE The City of Calgary Archives is a section of the City Clerk's Department. The Archives was established in 1981. The descriptive system currently in use was established in 1991. The Archives Society of Alberta has endorsed the use of the Bureau of Canadian Archivists' Rules for Archival Description as the standard of archival description to be used in Alberta's archival repositories. In acting upon the recommendations of the Society, the City of Calgary Archives will endeavour to use RAD whenever possible and to subsequently adopt new rules as they are announced by the Bureau. The focus of the City of Calgary Archives' descriptive system is the series level and, consequently, RAD has been adapted to meet the descriptive needs of that level. RAD will eventually be used to describe archival records at the fonds level. The City of Calgary Archives creates inventories of records of private agencies and individuals as the basic structural finding aid to private records. Private records include a broad range of material such as office records of elected municipal officials, records of boards and commissions funded in part or wholly by the City of Calgary, records of other organizations which function at the municipal level, as well as personal papers of individuals. All of these records are collected because of their close relationship to the records of the civic government, and are subject to formal donor agreements. The search pattern for information in private records is to translate inquiries into terms of type of activity, to link activity with agencies which are classified according to activity, to peruse the appropriate inventories to identify pertinent record series, and then to locate these series, or parts thereof, through the location register.

Unfortunately, the existing research on information openness and public participation towards Winter Olympic Games is limited in the perspective of host residents. Therefore, this article aims to understand the information disclosure and public participation, as well as the roles information and technologies (ICTs) play in achieving environmental sustainability. With the help of self-administered questionnaires, data were compiled. The survey was conducted in April 2017 with 650 residents in Beijing and Zhangjiakou via face-to-face interviews to obtain a random and statistically representative sample of host residents. Our findings indicated that only few respondents participated in the limited activities of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The respondents’ views on important issues of public participation varied obviously including the participating level, principles, time, ways, mechanism, and influencing factor. The analysis illustrated over 70% of respondents had the positive attitudes towards ICTs roles and functions in Beijing 2022.
