The most diverse order was perciformes with 175 species, 100 genera and 43 families. The top four families with the highest number of species were gobidae (28 species), carangidae (23 species), engraulidae (15 species) and lutjanidae (14 species). Conservation status of all taxa includes one species as endangered, five species as vulnerable, 14 near threatened, 93 least concern and 16 data deficient. As numbers of commercial, sports, ornamental and cultivable fishes are high, commercial and recreational fishing could be organized. Seed production by selective breeding is recommended for aquaculture practices in estuarine areas of Tamil Nadu. Phylogenetic relationships of 43 species in 11 genera, representing four subfamilies of the family Lutjanidae and two genera of the family Caesionidae, were inferred using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). Further assessment using the mtDNA control region (CR) was carried out to infer the relationship between the Indian and western Pacific types of Lutjanus russellii collected from the coast of Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 11 and 12 species were sequenced for COI and CR genes, respectively. Clade formation reflects, to some extent, the species groupings based on morphological characteristics and their biogeography. The close phylogenetic relationship between Pinjalo pinjalo and the Lutjanus red snappers (Lutjanus malabaricus and Lutjanus sebae) warrants a taxonomic revision of the former as the two genera are currently separated based on non-exclusive morphological characters. When Africa rifted away from South America, a large onshore triple junction began at about 13° S and propagated northward. This triple junction failed and created the Reconcavo-Tucano-Jupato rift (R-T-J), located in northeastern Brazil (north of Salvador). The extensional stress that created this rift was caused by a change in the force acting on the plate during the Aptian. A series of offshore rifts also opened at this time, adjacent to the R-T-J rift; this series of basins are referred to as Jacuipe, Sergipe, and Alagoas (J-S-A). The basins are separated by bathymetric highs to the north and the south of the Sergipe-Alagoas basin. -

Two distinct classes of myxozoans, Myxosporea and Malacosporea, are characterized by profound differences in rDNA evolution and well supported by differential biological and developmental features. This notwithstanding, most of the existing Myxosporea subtaxa require revision in the light of molecular phylogeny data. (Myxozoa, Myxosporea) from the brain of cultured olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in Korea Jae Bum Cho, Ki Hong Kim* Department of Aquatic Life Medicine, Pukyong National University, Pusan 608-737, South Korea ABSTRACT: A new Myxosporea, Kudoa paralichthys n. sp., is described from the brain of cultured olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in South Korea. Mature spores were quadrate in apical view, measuring 5.19 ± 0.54 µm in length, 8.23 ± 0.50 µm in width, and 6.87 ± 0.45 µm in thickness. Four valves were equal in size, each with 1 polar capsule. Polar capsules were pyriform in shape, measur- ing 2.2 ± 0.22 µm in length and 1.2 ± 0.14 µm in breadth. The sporoplasm consisted of a larger outer cell completely surrounding a smaller inner one, and had cytoplasmic projections. The junctions of shell valves were L-shaped. The sutural planes converged at the anterior ends of the spores and were associated with 4 small apex prominences in the central meeting point of the spores. Introduction The beaches are coastal environments with deposits of unconsolidated material, formed by the interaction of the continent (rivers that arrive in port material to the coast) and the sea. The main process includes reworked sediments by waves, tides, coastal currents and wind processes. The beaches are dynamic and sensible environments and responsible for important functions, mainly a special protection for adjacent ecosystems, where lived many species of animals and plants (Souza et al; 2005). Despite of the human occupation, one of the crucial factors for degradation of natural coastal environment, other factors also operate to the occurrence of degradation processes. Thus, it is necessary to know the sediment dynamics of the beaches and the natural and anthropogenic mechanisms that interfere with coastal processes. After these to be achieved the proposition of preservation program will be important to environments preservation during the urbanization project implementation. The Sergipe State follows the global trend of occupation and use of the coast for various activities (Carvalho and Fontes, 2006). On coastline of Sergipe, especially in the stretch where they understands the estuaries of Japaratuba and Vaza-Barris rivers, is located the higher income and higher population densities in the state. -

Twenty-one lectins were examined, i.e., N-acetylglucosamine (s-WGA, WGA, DSL-II, DSL, LEL, STL), mannose (Con A, LCA, PSA), galactose/N-acetylgalactosamine (RCA12, BSL-I, VVA, DBA, SBA, SJA, Jacalin, PNA, ECL), complex type N-glycans (PHA-E and PHA-L), and fucose (UEA-I). Spores encased by a plasmodial membrane were labeled for the majority of these lectins, with the exception of LCA, PSA, PNA, and PHA-L. Four lectins (RCA 120, BSL-I, DBA, and SJA) belonging to the galactose/N-acetylgalacto- samine group, only labeled spores, but not the plasmodial membrane.
