Reading the local paper: Social and cultural functions of the local press in Preston, Lancashire, 1855-1900 by Andrew Hobbs A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire November 2010 ABSTRACT This thesis demonstrates that the most popular periodical genre of the second half of the nineteenth century was the provincial newspaper. Using evidence from news rooms, libraries, the trade press and oral history, it argues that the majority of readers (particularly working-class readers) preferred the local press, because of its faster delivery of news, and because of its local and localised content. Building on the work of Law and Potter, the thesis treats the provincial press as a national network and a national system, a structure which enabled it to offer a more effective news distribution service than metropolitan papers. Taking the town of Preston, Lancashire, as a case study, this thesis provides some background to the most popular local publications of the period, and uses the diaries of Preston journalist Anthony Hewitson as a case study of the career of a local reporter, editor and proprietor. Three examples of how the local press consciously promoted local identity are discussed: Hewitson’s remoulding of the Preston Chronicle, the same paper’s changing treatment of Lancashire dialect, and coverage of professional football. These case studies demonstrate some of the local press content that could not practically be provided by metropolitan publications. The ‘reading world’ of this provincial town is reconstructed, to reveal the historical circumstances in which newspapers and the local paper in particular were read. -

Journal of Language and Literacy Education Vol. 14 Issue 1—Spring 2018 Toward a Theory of the Dark Fantastic: The Role of Racial Difference in Young Adult Speculative Fiction and Media Ebony Elizabeth Thomas Abstract: Humans read and listen to stories not only to be informed but also as a way to enter worlds that are not like our own. Stories provide mirrors, windows, and doors into other existences, both real and imagined. A sense of the infinite possibilities inherent in fairy tales, fantasy, science fiction, comics, and graphic novels draws children, teens, and adults from all backgrounds to speculative fiction – also known as the fantastic. However, when people of color seek passageways into &the fantastic, we often discover that the doors are barred. Even the very act of dreaming of worlds-that-never-were can be challenging when the known world does not provide many liberatory spaces. The dark fantastic cycle posits that the presence of Black characters in mainstream speculative fiction creates a dilemma. The way that this dilemma is most often resolved is by enacting violence against the character, who then haunts the narrative. This is what readers of the fantastic expect, for it mirrors the spectacle of symbolic violence against the Dark Other in our own world. Moving through spectacle, hesitation, violence, and haunting, the dark fantastic cycle is only interrupted through emancipation – transforming objectified Dark Others into agentive Dark Ones. Yet the success of new narratives fromBlack Panther in the Marvel Cinematic universe, the recent Hugo Awards won by N.K. Jemisin and Nnedi Okorafor, and the blossoming of Afrofuturistic and Black fantastic tales prove that all people need new mythologies – new “stories about stories.” In addition to amplifying diverse fantasy, liberating the rest of the fantastic from its fear and loathing of darkness and Dark Others is essential. -

Today the media plays a major role in fuelling such debates, but little is known about the impact of newspaper reporting on public perceptions of migrants in the past. This paper focuses on the reporting of cases brought before the police courts in Liverpool in 1851, 1871 and 1891 and, through the use of nominal record linkage to census data, examines the extent and manner in which migrant origin was commented on in one major Liverpool newspaper. It is demonstrated that, perhaps surprisingly, this media outlet largely ignored migrant origin in its reporting, and thus was not a significant factor in shaping public perceptions of migrants in the city. In turn, such reporting can fuel discrimination against immigrants and can make their lives more difficult.1 In twenty-first century Britain it seems rare for a popular newspaper not to run a story that focuses on immigration in some form. For instance, a detailed survey of media reporting of immigrants carried out in 2002 demonstrated the extent to which parts of the national press focused on issues relating to refugees and asylum seekers, most often casting these immigrants in a negative light.2 Much less is known about the role of media in nineteenth-century Britain in reporting migration and immigration, and thus in potentially shaping contemporary attitudes towards immigrants. -

Fantasy Literature: Definition”
Written version of the lecture Malin Alkestrand: “Fantasy literature: Definition” What is fantasy literature? This is a question that has been debated and answered in numerous studies on fantasy literature, but a quick overview of the studies shows that there is not one simple answer to this question. Different scholars mention different criteria for the genre, and they include different literary works in their descriptions of the genre. However, there are a few basic aspects that they all define as central for fantasy literature. In the following, I will discuss a few different definitions of fantasy literature that clarify the most central characteristics of the genre. To begin with, I want to point out that there is a difference between fantastic literature and fantasy literature. Fantastic literature includes all kinds of literature that do not rely on a mimetic description of a world that is similar to reality, such as fantasy literature, science fiction, and horror (Irwin 1976:55). Fantasy literature, on the other hand, is one of the genres included within the wider concept of fantastic literature, but it displays genre characteristics which makes it very different from science fiction, for example. Whereas science fiction literature describes a possible future with advanced technology that does not yet exist, but could potentially exist in 10, 100 or 1000 years, fantasy literature portrays worlds where the supernatural exists (see James & Mendlesohn 2012:3). Magic, magical creatures, spells, and dragons introduce a world that does not follow the natural laws that govern our own reality. According to William Robert Irwin (1976:155) fantasy literature can be understood as the result of presenting the supernatural as real and always present. -

Fantasy, especially science fiction, raises a lot of important and urgent problems because it allows readers to dream and develops their imagination. This article outlines the development of science fiction in modern Kazakh literature. The study used a review of non- and science fiction; it analyzes the main functions of science fiction, such as predictive, developing and entertaining ones. It shows the development of the science fiction genre and its current trends.The results demonstrate the importance of the predictive function of science fiction, which is to warn humanity about the possible dangers of technology.
