Conference Notes MEAC INDOOR TRACK & FIELD NOTES | WEEK 2 WEEK 2 12/11 2019-20 INDOOR TRACK & FIELD NOTES MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE 48 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE RANKINGS 2020 Indoor Preseason Rankings from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) will be released on Jan. 8, 2020 THIS WEEK CONFERENCE NOTES No competitions MEAC OVERVIEW • The 2019-20 MEAC indoor track & field season season will see all of the conference’s 11 institutions vying for the men’s and wom- en’s championships (though the Florida A&M men are ineligible for both the conference championship and postseason). North Caroli- na A&T State is the defending indoor champion for both the men and the women. OPENING WEEK • The 2019-20 MEAC indoor track & field season opened this past Saturday, with 10 of the conference’s 11 teams in action across five different meets. Coppin State will open its 2019-20 indoor season after the New Year. LAST SEASON • North Carolina A&T State swept the men’s and women’s MEAC indoor titles for the third straight year -- becoming the first program in conference history to accomplish that feat. The Aggie men re- corded a meet-record 191 points in the three-peat. The MEAC also boasted two national champions during the indoor season: NCAT’s LAST WEEK Kayla White in the women’s 200 meters and South Carolina State’s Tyrell Richard in the men’s 400 meters.     1 Running Head: AMERICAN = WHITE? American = White? Thierry Devos Mahzarin R. Banaji San Diego State University Harvard University American = White? 2 Abstract In six studies, the extent to which American ethnic groups (African, Asian, and White) are associated with the national category “American” was investigated. Although strong explicit commitments to egalitarian principles were expressed (Study 1), each of five subsequent studies consistently revealed that both African and Asian Americans as groups are less associated with the national category “American” than are White Americans (Studies 2-6). Under some circumstances, a complete dissociation between mean levels of explicit beliefs and implicit responses emerged such that an ethnic minority was explicitly regarded to be more American than were White Americans (e.g., African Americans representing the U.S. in Olympic sports), but implicit measures showed the reverse pattern (Studies 3 and 4). In addition, Asian American participants themselves showed the American = White effect, although African Americans did not (Study 5). Importantly, the American = White association predicted the strength of national identity in White Americans: the greater the exclusion of Asian Americans from the category “American,” the greater the identification with being American (Study 6). Together, these studies provide evidence that to be American is implicitly synonymous with being White. American = White? 3 American = White? In 1937, the Trustees of the Carnegie Corporation of New York invited the Swedish sociologist Gunnar Myrdal to study the “Negro problem” in America. The main message from Myrdal’s now classic study was captured in the title of his book, An American Dilemma (1944). Contrary to expectations that White Americans would express prejudice without compunction, Myrdal found that even sixty years ago in the deep South, White citizens clearly experienced a moral dilemma, “an ever-raging conflict” between strong beliefs in equality and liberty for all and the reality of their actions and their history.

Mr. Duane Ross (hereafter the “Athlete”) competed in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games (hereafter the “Athens Olympic Games”) in the men’s 110m hurdles event, in which he placed 5th in the semi-final heat. 2. In April 2010, the IOC received correspondence from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (“USADA”), indicating that USADA notified the Athlete on three separate occasions - on 2 November 2009, 16 December 2009 and 13 January 2010 – that USADA received evidence that the Athlete “used banned performance enhancing drugs prior to November 2001 outside the eight-year limitations period and then used banned performance enhancing drugs within the limitations period during 2001, 2002 and 2003.” 3. USADA informed the IOC that all three notification letters were sent via UPS and delivered to the Athlete’s front door but the Athlete did not confirm receipt. USADA also sent the last notification letter via certified mail; however, this letter was never picked up. USADA further sent all correspondence to the email address USADA had on file for the Athlete and did not receive a bounce back email. 4. USADA further informed the IOC that prior to initiating proceedings against the Athlete, and before sending the first notification letter of 2 November 2009, USADA telephoned the Athlete and informed him over the phone of the proceedings USADA was initiating, advising him that USADA would be sending a notification letter to his residence. 5. USADA confirmed to the IOC that correspondence to the Athlete was sufficient notice under USADA’s Protocol, which permits delivery of notice to the last address on file for an athlete.

    Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Aggies emerge from men’s track pack for first crown: The term “4x1” nearly took on new meaning at the Division I Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, as the final event offered the possibility that four teams could tie for the team title. Texas A&M made the most of the opportunity and won its first national championship in the sport June 13 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The term “4x1” normally refers to the 400-meter relay, but the title actually was decided in the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay, where the Aggies finally caught Oregon and held off two other rivals to spoil those teams’ title hopes. The win clinched a rare double victory since Texas A&M had captured the women’s track and field title moments earlier. “We’re the national champions,” said Justin Oliver, who anchored the Aggies to a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay to lock up the title. “Texas A&M, no one else. That’s all I could say when I finished the race. We did it! We did it!” Oliver is a member of coach Pat Henry’s first graduating class, which brought the former LSU coach – who led the Tigers to three men’s and 12 women’s national track and field titles – his first crowns in five seasons at Texas A&M. “We’re extremely pleased. My staff worked very hard, and this is a very gratifying pair of championships for this team,” Henry said.
