The historic presentation drew critical acclaim across Europe and attracted some 370,000 visitors over the course of sixteen weeks, making it the fourth-highest-attended special exhibition in the Prado’s history. The exhibition marked the first time that the Clark’s entire Renoir collection was presented outside of Williamstown and initiated a cross-cultural collaboration between the two museums that will continue in 2014 when the Clark hosts an exhibition of Rubens, Velázquez, and other masterpieces from the Prado’s royal collections. • In March 2011, the Clark’s first international tour of eighty of the best of its nineteenth- century French paintings began with an exhibition at the Palazzo Reale in Milan that drew enthusiastic crowds and strong critical reviews. The exhibition then traveled to the Musée des impressionnismes in Giverny, where French audiences attended in record numbers to welcome these works to their country. Guggenheim Museum Teacher Resource Unit A NOTE TO TEACHERS Few artists have exerted as great an influence over subsequent generations as Pablo Picasso, who is renowned for his innovative explorations in a prodigious variety of styles and techniques. Picasso Black and White is the first exhibition in a major museum setting to explore the artist’s recurrent use of black and white across his prolific career. Organized chronologically, the exhibition traces his continued return to this deceptively simple palette in his Rose and Blue period paintings, investigations into Cubism, neoclassical and Surrealist-inspired figure paintings, forceful scenes of war, allegorical still lifes, homages to old master canvases, novel interpretations of historical subjects, and the highly charged works of his twilight years. Comprising 118 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, the exhibition is drawn from museums across Europe and the United States, as well as private collections, including those of the Picasso family. The exhibition is organized by Carmen Giménez, Stephen and Nan Swid Curator of Twentieth-Century Art, with assistance from Karole Vail, Associate Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2018 doi: 10.5117/978946298580/ch04 Abstract This chapter investigates the consequences of Rohmer’s conversion to Kant on the main tenets of his film theory. The concept of appearance for appearance’s sake, which was already of primary importance before his conversion, underwent substantial revision thanks to the influence of Kantian notions of beauty, of nature, and, specifically, natural beauty (as outlined in the Critique of Judgement). Particular attention has been devoted to the intricacies of Kant’s unity of nature, in that they string together three of Rohmer’s key assumptions, namely that cinema is essentially an art of movement, that by the same token it is a narrative art, and that by pushing mechanism to the extreme cinema can attain freedom. By placing myself under the patronage of Kant from the very outset, I intended my approach to belong to the order of ontology, and not to that of language.
