The city enjoys fast daily plane service to these urban points in addition to regular railroad and bus service. J Chartered in 1791, the University is the eighteenth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and the first institution founded by state legislative action to offer instruction at the university level. J Within the seven divisions of the University, instruction is offered in fifty-four different curricula, of which thirty-nine are professional and fifteen non-professional. In the process of achieving these aims, the University believes that a student will grow in self-mastery and personal depth, will learn to reason logically, and will develop open-mindedness and tolerance toward the opinion of others. The instructional activities of the University are organized under five colleges—Agriculture, Arts aqd Sciences, Education and Nursing, Medi­ cine, and Technology; the School of Dental Hygiene; and the Graduate Council. "Within these seven instructional divisions, students may select from a wide variety of curricula. THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES The College of Arts and Sciences provides a general liberal four-year curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts, with opportunity for concentration in one or more of the following departments: Botany, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geology, German, Greek, History, Latin, Mathematics, Music, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Romance Languages (French and Spanish), Speech, and Zoology. All pre-professional requirements for admission to colleges of medicine, dentistry, law, and theology may be met in the College of Arts and Sci­ ences by a proper selection of electives. Those who have completed three years of pre-medical study at the University may qualify, on application, for the degree of Bachelor of Science after successfully completing one year of study in an approved college of medicine. 1 2 Educational Opportunities THE COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY The College of Technology offers four-year curricula leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineer­ ing, Management Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Com­ merce and Economics (Business Administration), and Medical Technology. Options in Commerce and Economics during the junior and senior years include Accounting, Banking, Finance and Insurance, Business Ad­ ministration, Hotel and Resort Management, Industrial Management, Marketing and Merchandising, Personnel Management, and Secretarial Studies. THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE The College of Agriculture offers a four-year curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, which includes both general and specialized training. The fields of specialization are Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Education, Agronomy, Botany, Dairy Manufac­ turing, Dairy Production, Horticulture, and Poultry Husbandry. There is also offered in co-operation with the College of Technology a four-year curriculum in Agricultural Engineering which leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering. A two-year program of courses is offered to prepare students for admission to professional train­ ing in veterinary science and forestry at other institutions. The College of Agriculture also offers a four-year curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in "Home Economics, with specializa­ tion in one of the following fields: Food and Nutrition; Clothing, Tex­ tiles, and Related Arts; Home Economics Education; and General Home Economics. THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND NURSING The College of Education and Nursing offers four-year curricula lead­ ing to the following degrees: in Elementary, Junior High, Secondary, and Industrial Education, the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education; in Business Education, the degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Educa­ tion; and in Music Education, the degree of Bachelor of Science in Music Education. This College also offers a four and one-half year curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and a three-year curriculum for graduate nurses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education. History 3 THE SCHOOL OF DENTAL HYGIENE The School of Dental Hygiene offers a two-year curriculum leading to a Certificate in Dental Hygiene. Recipients of this certificate are eligible to take various State Board Examinations for licensing as Dental Hygienists. Enrollment is limited to women. THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE The College of Medicine offers a four-year curriculum leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine and also offers graduate courses in specialty fields. GRADUATE STUDY Under the supervision of the Graduate Council, instruction is given leading to one or another of several advanced degrees. The student may elect to work for his appropriate degree in many departments of the Uni­ versity. The History The University owes its founding to Ira Allen, who gave four thou­ sand pounds to help establish a university in Burlington. He had aided more than any other one man in forming the State and in preserving its integrity through the troubled years preceding its admission to the Union. In 1791 the first General Assembly of the new State granted the charter for the University. Instruction was begun by the first president, Daniel C. Sanders, in 1800 and four years later the first class was graduated. In 1872 women were first admitted. The Hon. Justin S. Morrill, Representative and later Senator from Ver­ mont, sponsored the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862, which provided for colleges to teach liberal and scientific courses, including Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. Under this act the Legislature chartered the Vermont Agricultural College in 1864. A year later the two corporations were joined by legislative act in a new corporation, the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College. Later the Experiment Station and Exten­ sion Service were established by the Legislature. Courses in Civil Engi­ neering were first given in 1829. Four-year curicula in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Management Engineering have followed. The study of Medicine began with the appointment in 1804 of a lec­ turer in Chirurgery and Anatomy, and a full course of Medical Lectures 4 The Campus was offered in 1822 by the cooperation of an association of doctors and the University. From this developed the Medical College. Since 1920, women have been admitted to this college. Since 1944, the University has offered pre-clinical classroom instruc­ tion for the nursing students of most Vermont hospitals. In 1946, the University was re-organized into its present divisions. The course of the general eclipse will be from southwest to north- east, from the Pacific Ocean a little west of Chili to the Arabian Gulf and southeastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. The termination of this grand and sublime phenomenon will probably be witnessed from the summit of some of those stupendous monuments of ancient industry and folly, the vast and lofty pyramids on the banks of the Nile in lower Egypt. The principal cities and places that will be to- tally shadowed in this eclipse, are Valparaiso, Mendoza, Cordova, Assumption, St. Salvador and Pernambuco, in South America, and Sierra Leone, Teemboo, Tombucto and Fezzan, in Africa. At each of these places the duration of total darkness will be from one to six minutes, and several of the planets and fixed stars will probably be visible. 2. The other will also be a grand and beautiful eclipse, on Satur- day, September 7th, at 5h. 35m. evening, but on account of the Mnon's low latitude, and happening so late in the afternoon, no part of it will be visible in North America.

    Eugenics & the Quantified Self Resolving the Incommensurability of Eugenics & the Quantified Self Gabi Schaffzin The “quantified self,” a cultural phenomenon which emerged just before the 2010s, embodies one critical underlying tenet: self-tracking for the purpose of self-improvement through the identification of behavioral and environmental variables critical to one’s physical and psychological makeup. Of course, another project aimed at systematically improving persons through changes to the greater population is eugenics. Importantly, both cultural phenomena are built on the predictive power of correlation and regression—statistical technologies that classify and normalize. Still, a closer look at the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century eugenic projects and the early-twenty-first century proliferation of quantified self devices reveals an inherent incommensurability between the fundamental tenets underlying each movement. Eugenics, with its emphasis on hereditary physical and psychological traits, precludes the possibility that outside influences may lead to changes in an individual’s bodily or mental makeup. The quantified self, on the other hand, is predicated on the belief that, by tracking the variables associated with one’s activities or environment, one might be able to make adjustments to achieve physical or psychological health. By understanding how the technologies of the two movements work in the context of the predominant form of Foucauldian governmentality and biopower of their respective times, however, the incommensurability between these two movements might in fact be resolved. Emancipation toppled the region’s economy and led many Southerners to try to establish a “New South” to replace their antebellum plantation society. Their task was unprecedented, and necessitated completely reimagining the economic structure of the entire region. Although most Southerners believed that the region was blessed with abundant natural resources, there were many competing ideas about how these resources should be used in order to achieve prosperity. By examining how these different visions shaped New South economic development, this dissertation reconsiders a longstanding interpretation of the postbellum American South, and provides a fresh historical perspective on the challenges of sustainable development in underdeveloped places worldwide.

Marsh, Man and Nature (1864)1 George Perkins Marsh was born in 1801 to a Vermont lawyer. After graduating from Dartmouth College, he briefly pursued an academic career as a linguist before taking up his father’s occupation. After the death of his first wife, he turned to politics and won a seat as a Whig first in the statehouse and then in Congress. He was appointed to diplomatic posts in Turkey and Italy and turned his attention to more scholarly pursuits, including his most important work on the effect of human action on the environment. His advocacy of conservationism and warnings against careless land management helped spur the establishment of Arbor Day and forest reserves in the United States and beyond. [I]t is certain that man has done much to mould the form of the earth’s surface, though we cannot always distinguish between the results of his action and the effects of purely geological causes; that the destruction of the forests, the drainage of lakes and marshes, and the operations of rural husbandry and industrial art have tended to produce great changes in the hygrometric, thermometric, electric, and chemical condition of the atmosphere, though we are not yet able to measure the force of the different elements of disturbance, or to say how far they have been compensated by each other, or by still obscurer influences; and, finally, that the myriad forms of animal and vegetable life, which covered the earth when man first entered upon the theatre of a nature whose harmonies he was destined to derange, have been, through his action, greatly changed in numerical proportion, sometimes modified in form and product, and sometimes entirely extirpated.

    Welcome ear colleagues in history, welcome to the one-hundred-fi rst annual meeting of the Organiza- tion of American Historians in New York. Last year we met in our founding site of Minneap- Dolis-St. Paul, before that in the national capital of Washington, DC. On the present occasion wew meet in the world’s media capital, but in a very special way: this is a bridge-and-tunnel aff air, not limitedli to just the island of Manhattan. Bridges and tunnels connect the island to the larger metropolitan region. For a long time, the peoplep in Manhattan looked down on people from New Jersey and the “outer boroughs”— Brooklyn, theth Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island—who came to the island via those bridges and tunnels. Bridge- and-tunnela people were supposed to lack the sophistication and style of Manhattan people. Bridge- and-tunnela people also did the work: hard work, essential work, beautifully creative work. You will sees this work in sessions and tours extending beyond midtown Manhattan. Be sure not to miss, for example,e “From Mambo to Hip-Hop: Th e South Bronx Latin Music Tour” and the bus tour to my own Photo by Steve Miller Steve by Photo cityc of Newark, New Jersey. Not that this meeting is bridge-and-tunnel only.     PRESIDENT LINCOLN’S MINISTER RESIDENT TO THE SUBLIME PORTE: EDWARD JOY MORRIS (1861-1870) I When President Abraham Lincoln designated Congressman Edward Joy Morris, of Philadelphia, to serve as his Minister Resident in Constan­ tinople on June 8, 1861, he apparently knew something of what he was doing. Mr. Morris had not only served a number of terms in the United States House of Representatives, to say nothinG of the Pennsylvania State Legislature, he had already had experience in diplomacy, as the American Chargé d’ Af­ faires in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (1850-1853), and had traveled widely in Europe and the Middle East.1 He had also written and translated a number of books, in addition to writing for various magazines and journals. Yet Morris remains a somewhat neglected and even forgotten American di­ plomatist who served his country with distinction in time of trouble on the periphery of American interest.2 He was to remain in touch with the Sub­ lime Porte throughout the American Civil War during the Johnson Adminis­ tration which followed, and the early part of the Grant period. The CLI is an evaluated inventory of all landscapes having historical significance that are listed on or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, or are otherwise managed as cultural resources through a public planning process and in which the NPS has or plans to acquire any legal interest. The CLI identifies and documents each landscape’s location, size, physical development, condition, landscape characteristics, character-defining features, as well as other valuable information useful to park management.
