Virginia McRostie Bustamante PhD University College London July 2013 2 ABSTRACT The onset of agriculture is an important research topic in archaeology. Nonetheless, several areas of the world still lack sufficient datasets to participate critically within this debate. This is the case for the western slope of the Puna de Atacama, where explanations about plant production have been based on limited evidence resulting in assumptions about the role of agriculture associated with the Formative. More recent research in the Americas has acknowledged the diversity of developments taking place during the Formative period, including regional differences in the degree of wild and domestic plants food production. This research identifies and analyses new evidence in order to revaluate current hypothesis and models of plant production in the Atacama. The analyses are based on the identification of plant microfossils taken from hoes and grinding tools and isotopes within human bones (δ13Ccol, δ13Cap, δ15N, δ18O, Sr87/Sr86). The result of these analyses argues that crops in the area were limited or absent and highlights different levels and managements for native plants such as Scirpus, Cactaceae and still unidentified tubers. As worldwide battery demand is expected to triple and reach a value of $100bn by 2025, failing to boost lithium supply could make or break the global electric vehicle supply chain and jeopardise global climate efforts, a new investigation by E&T finds. To ensure supply, lithium mining must increase or otherwise a deficit may harm progress, warn experts. Most of the world’s lithium production takes place in South America, where 70 per cent of global reserves are concentrated. Chile, accounting for 38 per cent of the production, is in a difficult spot. Firms are doing their best to exploit reserves, but environmental concerns increasingly challenge their endeavours. As we admire the head coverings created and worn by the human groups of our northern desert regions at successive stages of their cultural development, we cannot help but marvel at the creativity, skill and beauty expressed in each of the textile creations exhibited here. Yet the value of these pieces lies not only in their aesthetic, technical and symbolic qualities, but also in their ability to illustrate and convey the social and cultural diversity of the ethnic groups that occupied this northern desert territory over the course of the prehistoric period. The survival of this ancestral legacy and our ability to enjoy it today can be credited, among other things, to the extreme aridity of the Atacama Desert. A relational approach to mining activities and indigenous communities in northwestern Argentina Jasmin Höglund Hellgren Abstract Over the last decades the struggle for indigenous rights has accomplished great achievements within international law. In relation to development projects and resource extraction on indigenous lands, the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) has gained increased recognition and is today expressed as an important instrument to realize indigenous peoples’ right to self-determination. Nevertheless, empirical evidence have identified power asymmetries as one of the major obstacles for effective and meaningful FPIC implementation. This study investigates how power asymmetries emerge and affect the right to self- determination through the four FPIC requirements. Based on field research and by applying a relational approach, the study investigates a case of mining activities in northwestern Argentina where indigenous communities currently experience an increased interest in lithium deposits on their lands from transnational corporations. The study shows how relations characterized by dependency and clientelism create a situation where actors hold unequal power positions which permeate all FPIC requirements severely undermining the principle’s potential to fulfill its purpose. Lastly, based on the findings the study argues substantial underpinnings in terms of necessary preconditions are needed if FPIC are to be able to ensure self-determination.
