BRIER CREEK PATRIOT Brier Creek Chapter Screven County, Georgia Vol. 3 Copies - 60 Issue 10 Editor – Dess D. Smith III, 214 N Racetrack Street, Swainsboro, GA 30401 Compatriots, Our tenth Brier Creek Chapter meeting for 2018 will be held on Thursday night, October 11, 2018 at the R & D’s Restaurant, located on Hwy 301 just north of Sylvania at 6:30. Don’t forget that all spouses are invited to our regular Chapter meetings any time that they want to attend. We always have great programs about the Revolutionary War that they will find very interesting. We look forward to both the SAR and DAR Chapters of Screven County working together to preserve the Brier Creek Battlefield and educate the citizens of Screven County about this Battlefield. This month’s program will be presented by Emory Allen Burton. Emory is currently a Professor of History at Augusta University. Allen also is a well-known speaker about the American revolution and is highly requested to present programs at SAR Chapters, Civic Clubs and during the weekend festivities in Washington, GA during the Commemoration of the Battle at Kettle Creek each year in February. LTC (ret) Burton retired from the United States Army Reserve and is a “Vietnam Veteran”. Allen is also a graduate of the highly recognized Military Junior College in Milledgeville, Georgia Military College, in 1962. Allen lives with his wife in Washington, GA. Allen’s presentation is titled, “Alexander Hamilton”. Alexander Hamilton is considered one of the “Founding Fathers of the United States of America”. See below the photo of Burton from a file photo. During the September Brier Creek meeting, September 6, 2018, Daniel Johnson presented his program. It was titled General Lachlan McIntosh at the Siege of Savannah. Daniel is the head librarian at the University of South Carolina, Salkehatchie at Allendale and Walterboro. He learned about the Brier Creek Battleground in 1996 when he was editor of the Sylvania Telephone. He has written two books about the site, Brier Creek Battleground and the brand-new Savannah, Augusta and Brier Creek: Samuel Elbert and his resistance against the Conquest of Georgia. He also has written a biography, This Cursed War: Lachlan McIntosh in the American Revolution, and two other books about the American Revolution: Fort Morris Battleground and Blood on the Marsh. See below the photo of Daniel during September’s presentation at the Brier Creek Chapter The new SAR Chapter in Washington County, GA that we are helping to Charter, held its 2nd Organizational meeting on Tuesday night, September 11, 2018.
