Linbury Theatre I 1St Year I Saturday 26 June Welcome NEXT GENERATION: THE ROYAL BALLET SCHOOL LINBURY THEATRE I 1ST YEAR I SATURDAY 26 JUNE WELCOME It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Next Generation: The Royal Ballet School at the Linbury Theatre. This has been an extraordinary and unforgettable year of challenge and adaptation for The Royal Ballet School. Today’s performance is a tribute to the resilience and creativity shown by our students and staff throughout that time. Seeing their determination to succeed, separated from each other for so much of the year and unable to train or teach in the studios they love, has been a powerful inspiration. I am delighted that following the sadness of cancelled performances in 2020, we finally have the chance to come together to celebrate their work. I wanted our students to enjoy dancing in front of an audience again, and the best way to do this was to give them as many chances to perform on stage as possible. The School’s teams have, with spectacular effort, put together nine different programmes over 32 performances. Each of the eight year groups will have the chance to dance in their own dedicated performances, culminating in a final collective, socially distanced, performance at the Royal Opera House. I am proud to say that the dedication and hard work of our remarkable community of dancers and teachers mean we can continue to call the School one of the very best in the world. Across this season, dancers of all ages are performing a range of work that shows off the skills they have learnt through their training. Each year the School is fortunate to work with and perform pieces from renowned choreographers and rehearsal directors in preparation for our Summer Performances. We are hugely grateful this year for choreography, direction and kind permissions from: Deborah MacMillan, Peter Wright, Carlos Acosta, Kevin O’Hare, Jiří Kylián, Paul Murphy, Ashley Page, Didy Veldman, Julie Lincoln, Carmen Thomas, Michael Nunn, Billy Trevitt, Anthony Russell-Roberts, Mikaela Polley, Valentino Zucchetti, Mark Annear, Justine Berry, Matt Nicholson, Denis Bonner, Ben Stevenson, Dawn Scannell, Morgann Runacre-Temple and many more. This year, in which collaboration has been so vital, I would like to highlight the invaluable support of the Royal Opera House staff and its superlative orchestra. As always, I wish to convey my gratitude to our Chairman, Christopher Rodrigues CBE, the Board of Governors, our hard-working volunteers and of course our remarkable sponsors whose generosity is the reason we are able to be here today. An extra special thank you to creative agency Imagination for sponsoring our performances and for their continued support of the School. I hope you enjoy and appreciate our students’ much longed-for return to the stage. • Sugar Plum Fairy Versus COVID-19: 10 Nutcrackers for 2020
Sugar Plum Fairy Versus COVID-19: 10 Nutcrackers for 2020 December 4, 2020 By Robin J. Miller For decades, ballet companies, especially in North America, have depended on The Nutcracker for their bread-and-butter, knowing it would draw vast crowds every Christmas and make it possible to present other, often more challenging fare the rest of the year. Thanks to pandemic restrictions, many companies cancelled their 2020 Nutcrackers months ago. But several had hoped to run their productions live more or less as usual — until last-minute lockdowns led to forced cancellations virtually around the globe. There are still a couple, however, bravely planning to go ahead live (this may change), and still more who have gone digital, shooting new film versions or resurrecting older recordings and making them available to watch at home, on the big screen in movie theatres or even projected onto a landmark building. All this, it seems, not primarily to generate revenue — the digital performances are low- cost or free — but simply to bring a little light and happiness to the many who are yearning for a visit to the Land of the Sweets. CANADA Beyond the stage: Goh Ballet Tyler Carver in Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker | Photo: David Cooper Goh Ballet’s classic Nutcracker made a leap in 2018 from The Centre in Vancouver to the much larger Queen Elizabeth Theatre for its annual run. This year, the company has made yet another leap — to a new film version where, instead of Clara rescuing the Nutcracker Prince from the evil Mouse King, we have Alex, a 20-year-old struggling dancer who is spending a cold, pandemic-ridden winter separated from his family and racked with doubt about himself, his talent and his future … until he meets Clara.

  • Khadra and Sea Change: Sibelius’S Music at Sadler’S Wells
Eija Kurki Khadra and Sea Change: Sibelius’s music at Sadler’s Wells In the late 1940s Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet premièred two choreographies which used Jean Sibelius’s music: Khadra and Sea Change. Khadra was choreographed in 1946 by Celia Franca (1921–2007) to the Belshazzar’s Feast suite. Sea Change was a choreography by John Cranko (1927–73), which Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet premièred in Dublin in 1949 and which was subsequently performed in London. The ballet was based on Sibelius’s tone poem En saga. 1 Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet was a new company of young dancers and choreographers that performed from 1946 onwards at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in Islington, after Sadler’s Wells Ballet – which had previously performed at the theatre – had moved to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where it later assumed the name Royal Ballet. Both choreographers, Franca and Cranko, were young dancers who danced or had previously danced either with the Sadler’s Wells Ballet (Celia Franca) or with both of these companies (John CranKo). Khadra was the 24-year old Celia Franca’s first ballet choreography for the company – indeed, the first major choreography that she ever undertook. She subsequently made her career as founder and director of the National Ballet of Canada. John Cranko, at the age of 21, had made some choreographies earlier, but Sea Change was his first major project for the company, to be followed by several others that made him famous. Later, as a director of the Stuttgart Ballet, Cranko developed that company and made choreographies for it that were also performed by other ballet companies worldwide.
