Good for moving small gravel, sand, and loose topsoil. Not a digging tool. Hard Rake Garden Rake This bow rake is a multi-purpose tool Good for loosening or breaking up compacted soil, spreading mulch or other material evenly and leveling areas before planting. • The Broadfork
The BroadFork Many gardeners and growers, especially those working on heavy soils, face the difficulty of deeply compacted soil and want to loosen and aerate it without bringing lower layers to the surface. On a field scale there are tractor-based solutions, but how to tackle the task in the smaller plot? The BroadFork is designed to be at least part of the solution! (The Glaser Bio cultivator (414) has the same objective.) Here are some of Eliot Coleman’s comments from his book The New Organic Grower:– “This two-handled deep tillage tool is known by different names, but broadfork comes as close to describing it as any other. Like most agricultural tools its genesis surely dates far back in agricultural history. It consists of a 2-foot wide spading fork with a 5-foot-long handle at either side of the fork. The teeth on the fork are spaced 4 inches apart and are about 12 inches long . The tines are designed with a parabolic shape and curve down from an attachment point at the back of the crossbar. This difference is the key. The parabolic curve . works with an easy, rolling motion. As the handles are pulled down, the tines curve under and lift the soil easily. “The broadfork is held with the handles tilted slightly forward of vertical. It is pressed into the soil as far as possible by stepping on the crossbar, then the two handles are pulled back towards the operator in an easy rocking motion. The broadfork is then lifted from the loosened soil, the operator steps backwards 6 inches, and the manoeuvre is repeated..

~DOWNLOAD & PRINT~ Equipment to Get Started by Cath Manuel www.soiltosupper.com Choose tools that are easy to hold and use, especially when gardening with kids! Care for equipment by rinsing or wiping after use and sharpening cuttings tools as needed. Also, wipe over blades of cutting tools after pruning plants that are infected with pests or diseases. You don't want the problem spreading throughout your garden! Look after your garden tools, choose quality items and they will last a long time. Common gardening tools. Gloves - used to protect your hands when using tools and also in the soil. Some plants and gardening products can irritate skin so it's best to use gloves when using products and sharp tools. Hand trowel and Hand fork – both are small tools used to dig into soil and potting mixtures. These tools are used extensively when gardening. Secateurs – small hand-held sharp cutting tool used for pruning and harvesting a range of plants. Keep the blades sharp to ensure a clean cut of plant stems. Fork – available as short or long handled. Used to loosen soil in gardens and lawns. Also useful for moving mulch, compost or manures. Shovel – the long handled shovel is used for digging holes and shovelling (or moving) materials, same as garden fork. A short handle shovel can also be known as ‘Square mouth shovel’ which is used for moving materials, not for digging holes. Rake – for gathering up leaves, grass clippings and mulch from around gardens and lawns. Usually made of plastic with a wooden handle. Watering Can – holds a small amount of water for applying to plants.

LESSON 1 MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT Aim Identify a range of horticultural materials and equipment and sundries. In order to run an efficient enterprise the horticulturist requires a range of materials and equipment that will help to complete jobs efficiently and within a structured time frame. The equipment that is chosen will depend on the size of the operation and the amount of money available. A small single person garden maintenance operation for example may be able to run quite successfully with a minimal outlay for expansive equipment, a lawn mower, range of hand tools and an appropriate vehicle may be all that is needed. However a large nursery will require a much complex array of materials and equipment. No matter how large or small the operation is, the horticulturist needs to keep abreast of what is on the market and how this equipment can help to run a cost effective, efficient business. POWER TOOLS Power tools can make life much easier, but they can be expensive to buy and potentially dangerous to use. If used and maintained properly power tools can last for a long time, but be prepared to spend some of the time you save by using a power tool to maintain that power tool. Most power tools have parts which wear out and need replacing from time to time. Moving parts wear out but if kept clean and oiled and/or greased, the rate of wear can be kept to a minimum. Corrosion is another major problem, which will be greatly reduced by simply keeping metal parts clean and coated with oil.
