FOGNINI, MARTIN MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME, TITLE ON THE LINE

Final Preview: The championship at the Konzum Croatia Open Umag on Sunday features a familiar face in No. 4 seed who takes on unseeded of Slovakia for the first time. Fognini, who reached the final here in 2013 (l. to Robredo), is appearing in his 11th career ATP World Tour final (3-7).

Fognini is appearing in Umag for the ninth straight year and he’s trying to capture his fourth career ATP World Tour title, the first since Vina del Mar, Chile in February 2014 (d. L. Mayer). His last final appearance came in Hamburg last August (l. to Nadal). The 29-year-old Italian, who leads the tournament in return games won this week (15 of 29, 52%), is looking to join countryman in the winner’s circle this weekend. Lorenzi captured his maiden ATP World Tour title in Kitzbuehel on Saturday. There has never been an Italian winner in tournament history (since 1990).

Martin is making his maiden ATP World Tour final debut. The 26-year-old Slovak is No. 124 in the Emirates ATP Rankings and he’s trying to become the sixth first-time winner on the ATP World Tour this season. He’s also trying to become the third winner ranked outside the Top 100 this season. The others are: Florian Mayer (No. 192, Halle) and Juan Monaco (No. 148, Houston). He beat countryman Martin Klizan in the second round, saving five match points.
