All four players along with the four other unseeded quarter-finalists arrying to capture their first ATP World Tour title of the season. In fact, Carreno Busta is the only player left to reach an ATP World Tour final in 2016. He is a two-time finalist. In the opening match on Centre Court, Carlos Berlocq of Argentina takes on Chardy, who won the previous meeting on grass in Eastbourne two years ago. The 33-year-old Berlocq is appearing in his first ATP World Tour quarter-final since reaching the semi-finals on home soil in Buenos Aires in February 2015 (l. to Nadal). Chardy is making his fourth quarter-final showing of the season, first on clay, and he’s looking to reach the semi-finals for the first time since last August when he reached the final four at ATP Masters 1000 Montreal (l. to Djokovic). In the next match on, Fognini and Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia & Herzegovina meet for the second time in Umag. Last year the Italian won 63 75 in the 2R. Fognini, who reached the final in 2013 (l. to Robredo), is trying to advance to his fifth career semi-final in Umag. Dzumhur, who was a quarter-finalist in Istanbul in May, is looking to reach his second career ATP World Tour semi-final (’15 Casablanca). On Grandstand, Gastao Elias of Portugal and Carreno Busta square off for the first time. The 25-year- old Elias is playing here on a career-high No. 72 ranking after reaching his first career ATP World Tour semi-final last week at Bastad (l. to Verdasco). Carreno Busta is appearing in his sixth clay court quarter-final of the season and his best results are runner-up efforts in Sao Paulo and Estoril. In the next match on Grandstand, Slovakian Andrej Martin and Sousa collide for the first time on the ATP World Tour. They split two previous ATP Challenger Tour clay court meetings in 2013. Martin is appearing in his first career ATP World Tour quarter-final and Sousa, who reached the final here last year (l. to Thiem), has turned his season around after a slow start. After compiling a 5-13 start through April, Sousa has put together a 12-8 match record since May, highlighted by the semi-finals in Nice (l. to A. Zverev) and quarter-finals at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid (l. to Nadal) and Bastad (l. to Elias). Unlike the nominate form, the genetically similar subspecies P.a. parkelj from Bela Krajina in Slovenia is pigmented and might represent a distinct species, although a recent genetic study suggests that the two subspecies are poorly differentiated at the molecular level and may not even warrant subspecies status (Goricki and Trontelj 2006).
