2020 Higgy Tyler Award: Steve Brown

Since 1997, the Higgy Tyler Award has been presented by the Friends of WOSU Board to recognize a WOSU staff member who enhances the quality of work-life within WOSU and exemplifies the qualities of initiative and creativity in service to the mission of WOSU.

Many WOSU employees stepped up and performed incredibly during the tumultuous year 2020. Among those who adapted and thrived, WOSU News Managing Editor Steve Brown stood out.

For 3 months, due to COVID protocols, Steve got up at 3am, arrived at a vacant newsroom and delivered the latest news to 89.7 NPR News listeners with authority and empathy. Then as the pandemic eased a bit, protests erupted in downtown Columbus after the death of George Floyd. Then came the statehouse bribery scandal. Then the election. Then another surge in COVID cases. He not only led the newsroom to extraordinary coverage of an extraordinary year, but he also led by example.

Congratulations to Steve and thanks to the Friends of WOSU Board for supporting this annual staff award.
