We ask you to complete the “Expression of Interest” form that is provided as a separate attachment. Please return this form at your earliest convenience, but preferably by January 16, 2017, to [email protected] We cordially invite members of the IGC 630 Program, and other geoscientists interested in integrated Permian and Triassic stratigraphy, to participate in this event. IGCP 630 will provide small travel grants to sponsor project members who wish to take part in the Field Workshop. Sponsors National Academy of Sciences of Armenia National Natural Science Foundation of Armenia IGCP 630 Committee Local organizing committee (Academy of Sciences of Armenia) Dr. A. Karakhanyan, Dr. Kh. Meliksetian, Dr. L. Sahakyan, Dr. A. Grigoryan. International Advisory Scientific Committee: Dr. L. Sahakyan and Dr. A. Gatovsky (Moscow) 2 CONFERENCE VENUE Round Hall of Presidium of Armenian National Academy of Sciences The Field Workshop will visit three outcrop locations in southern Armenia where the Permian-Triassic boundary is clearly exposed, and will investigate the recovery of ecosystems following the end-Permian mass extinction. The Southern Caucasus is one of the few places in the World where continuous sections of Upper Permian and Lower Triassic strata containing open-marine fauna can be observed. The IGCP 630 Field Workshop will offer participants the opportunity of visiting three Permian- Triassic transition sections along the northern margin of PaleoTethys. At these sections, well- dated Upper Permian limestones are overlain by Lower Triassic limestones containing ammonoids and microbial-metazoan build-ups up to 15m thick. The two-day Conference at the Institute of Geological Sciences, Yerevan, will address palaeo- ecological, -oceanic and -climatic conditions during the Permian-Triassic transition, and will discuss these types of data within a global stratigraphic framework. New data on the Permian- Triassic transition in Armenia will be presented. A lecture theatre, together with a meeting room for the Organizing Committee and for IGCP officers, will be provided by the Institute of Geological Sciences for the two days of the Conference. Abstract submission deadline: July 31, 2017 3 REGISTRATION FEES Tentative Costs of the two-day conference and three-day Field Workshop: 750€ (Conference fee at Institute of Geological Sciences; 150€). The Khor Virap Monastery is a shrine and a pilgrimage site important to the Armenian Christianity. The church complex is built atop the pit (= virap in Armenian), where St. Gregory the Illuminator was cruelly imprisoned, some time at AD 288 by the heathen Armenian King Trdat III. St. Gregory suffered his imprisonment in that pit for 14 years until upon miraculously curing the king of a loathsome disease, the king freed him and converted himself and Armenia to Christianity. In 301, Armenia was the first country in the world to be declared a Christian nation. Khor Virap monastery Visit to the Ogbin outcrop section. Accommodation in the Hotel Vayk in the city of Vayk. Present-day Armenia is bounded by Georgia to the north, Iran to the south-east, Azerbaijan to the east and Turkey to the west. From 1920 to 1991 Armenia was a Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR, but historically its land encompassed a much greater area including parts of all present-day bordering countries (see fig.). At its greatest extent it occupied the plateau covering most of what is now central and eastern Turkey (c. 300,000 sq. km) bounded on the north by the Pontic Range and on the south by the Taurus and Kurdistan mountains. During the 11th century another Armenian state was formed to the west of Historic Armenia on the Cilician plain in south-east Asia Minor, bounded by the Taurus Mountains on the west and the Amanus (Nur) Mountains on the east. Its strategic location between East and West made Historic or Greater Armenia an important country to control, and for centuries it was a battlefield in the struggle for power between surrounding empires. Periods of domination and division have alternated with centuries of independence, during which the country was divided into one or more kingdoms. • The Prospects for Wine Tourism As a Tool for Rural Development in Armenia – the Case of Vayots Dzor Marz1
The Prospetcs for Wine Tourism as a Tool for ... _________________________________________________________________________ Прегледни рад Економика пољопривреде Број 4/2011. УДК: 338.48-6:642(470.62/.67) THE PROSPECTS FOR WINE TOURISM AS A TOOL FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN ARMENIA – THE CASE OF VAYOTS DZOR MARZ1 A. Harutjunjan2, Margaret Loseby3 Abstract. The paper examines the prospective role which wine tourism could play in the rural and in the much needed overall economic development of Armenia. It begins with a brief description of the antique origin and the present economic situation of the wine sector in Armenia, followed by a description of recent trends in the tourist sector as a whole in Armenia. The particular features of wine tourism are examined in relation to Armenia and to other wine producing countries. Attention is then concentrated on a specific region of Armenia, Vayots Dzor, which is particularly important for wine production, and is also endowed with historical monuments with great potential for the development of tourism. The case of one particular village is illustrated in some detail in order to indicate how tourism in general, and specifically wine tourism could be developed for the benefit of the rural community. The paper concludes by outlining a strategy to be followed to achieve the growth of the sector. Key words: Wine industry, tourism, cultural heritage, rural development, wine tourism 1. Introduction Grape cultivation is believed to have originated in Armenia near the Caspian Sea, from where it seems to have spread westward to Europe and Eastward to Iran and Afghanistan (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific 1999).

  • The Scramble Round 4 Finals
The Scramble Round 4 Finals 1. One of these artifacts with arms is known as a tevavor, while Momik, credited with the design of Noravank Monastery, designed many of these. The most extensive collection of these artifacts is at Noratus, while the biggest one in the world is located in Jugha, in modernday Azerbaijan. Listed in 2000 under UNESCO, these objects often have rosettes and botanical motifs, in addition to crosses. For the point, name these Armenian “crossstones” which are ubiquitious in Armenian cemeteries. ANSWER: khachkars 2. The last speaker of one of these languages died in 1992 and had lived in the Balikesir region of Turkey. In one of these languages, referring to wara and bara would suggest that one is speaking directly to a man about his horse and in the second case, a woman. Many speakers of these languages now live in Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt, and Ubykh has no native speakers. Including such languages as Abaza and Kabardian, the eastern group includes the Nakh languages. For the point, name this language group. ANSWER: Northwest Caucasian languages 3.One musical group performing in this language was called Zugasi Berepe, whose founder Kazim Koyuncu (Koyoonjew), sang a popular song called “Didou Nana.” A newspaper in this language, Agani Murutsxi (murutskhi) recalls Iskenderi Tzitasi’s 1929 newspaper, Mch’ita Murutsxi, or “Red Star.” Spoken in towns like Findikli and Hopa, it is written in a Latin alphabet, and most of its speakers are Muslim. For the point, name this Georgian language, spoken in Turkey mostly near Rize (reezay).
