Many of the readings will focus on romantic relationships (dating and married), but coverage will also include other close relationships including friendships and family relationships. We also will study relationships among individuals in larger groups and social networks, including how social networks affect intimate relationships and vice-versa. The course will examine the ways in which relationships are formed, maintained, and dissolved, and what makes a successful relationship. A number of interpersonal processes will be discussed including attraction, social exchange, conflict, social support, attachment, jealousy, love, and communication. One emphasis of the course will be on how relationships are developed, maintained, and ended through new communication technologies and are affected by them. The students will become familiar with theories, research findings, and methods used to study social and personal relationships in the growing science of personal relationships . COURSE OBJECTIVES Students who complete the course will: • obtain a knowledge base of current scientific literature on a variety of personal relationships. • gain an understanding of specific theories, models, concepts, and research findings associated with personal relationships. • become aware of the contributions of sociology and social psychology to the knowledge base on personal relationships as well as the contributions of other disciplines. • learn about the positive (and the negative) role of relationships in human existence. • learn how relationships are affected by social structure, socialization, and culture. • develop an appreciation of diversity in social relationships as a function of culture, subculture, and individual characteristics. 2 • learn how to become a smart consumer of information about relationships, and to evaluate the soundness of research findings, including material that appears in the popular media. • further develop critical thinking, reading, oral, writing, and research skills. • be able to connect theory and research findings with practice, by becoming aware of how the information can be used to enhance one’s own relationships as well as bonds in the larger community. TEXTBOOK AND ADDITIONAL READINGS 1. Miller, R. (2018). Intimate relationships , 8h Edition, McGraw-Hill. 2. Several additional assigned readings are available in the Instructor’s folder on the CAS- IT server. To access this folder, take the following steps: 1) Type in your web-browser: https://casit.illinoisstate.edu/instructor/ 2) You will be asked to provide your Username and password; 3) Scroll down and find my ULID, which is sprecher (no initials); 4) Then, click on the name of this course ( Personal Relationships ). CLASS FORMAT Diverse activities will occur during class time. While most class periods will consist of some lecture by the instructor, class time will also be devoted to student presentation, peer discussion, and class activities. The material presented in class will sometimes highlight and summarize the material in the readings, and sometimes be on different (but related) topics. There is a good chance that at least one class day will become an “online day” with activities (including a video) assigned online. You will receive credit for doing the online activities. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Exams : There will be four unit exams that test material presented in the readings, class lectures, presentations, and discussions, and an optional final exam that will contain a small set of items from the last week of semester but will be mostly cumulative (tests material across the entire semester). The final exam score can take the place of a low unit exam score if higher. Each exam will be worth 100 points. The exams will include both multiple choice items and short- answer/essay questions. No make-up exams will be given except in the case of a serious illness or emergency, and then you need to contact the professor via email before the time of the exam. Documentation is needed in such cases, and the make-up exam needs to be arranged as soon as possible after the regularly scheduled exam. Make-up exams may be different from the regularly scheduled exams. Early exams are possible for rare, documented academic reasons for needing to be on a university-sponsored trip. 2. Assignments: You will have six assignments due throughout the semester that are designed to enhance your writing, presentation, and research skills. They are also designed to help you learn more about relationship research. Below is a brief description of each assignment, but they are also described in more detail in Appendix 1. 3 Assignment 1: An Internet Search Related to Relationship Science (due 8/30) 5 pts This assignment involves doing several directed computer searches related to relationship science and answering questions after each search. Assignment 2: Part I of Presentation of a “Box” from the Textbook -- The Preparation (due 9/18) 10 pts This assignment involves preparing a PowerPoint summary of one of the boxes in the textbook. In Step 1 (due 9/18), you will turn in a draft of your 7-8 slide presentation and a pdf of your empirical article. In Step 2 (assignment 6), you will present a 5-6 minute presentation to class on your topic and turn in your materials. You have the option to pair up with someone and present a slightly longer presentation. Presentations will occur throughout the semester, and your date will be determined primarily based on the topic to which you are randomly assigned. Assignment 3: Evaluating Online Dating Sites from a Scientific Perspective (due 10/2) 15 pts After reading the required online articles, “Dating in a Digital World,” “From the Front Porch to Swiping Right,” and “Connecting Profile-to-Profile,” and an additional article of your choice, you will do a brief assignment on the topic of using online dating as a way to find a partner. This will include summarizing a dating website, evaluating the process of finding a partner through a dating website, and creating your own hypothetical dating profile. Assignment 4: Participation in On-line Studies on Relationships (due 10/23) 15 pts Explore two on-line studies at the Social Psychology Network (http://www.socialpsychology.org/expts.htm ) that focus on relationship issues, and write a 3-4 page summary of these studies. Assignment 5: Interesting Relationship Science in the News (due 11/13) 10 pts Summarize (briefly) “8 Interesting Findings” based on the entries in the “Research Spotlight” at the website Science of Relationships (current name: Luvze, at https://www.luvze.com ) Assignment 6: Presentation of your assigned box from Miller (presentations occur throughout the semester but must be completed by 12/6) 15 pts For this assignment, you will actually do your presentation. The date of your presentation will depend on the your randomly assigned topic. It is expected that your slides will be improved from the version turned in for Assignment 2. Your revised slides should be turned in the day of your presentation, along with a pdf of your article. 3. Class Attendance, Participation, and Out-of-Class Online Activities: At every class period, attendance will be taken or an in-class activity will be conducted that will be turned in (or both). It is also expected that students engage in discussion. It will also be recorded if you arrive late to class or leave early. In addition, there may be online activities assigned (for specific points), especially if I need to be absent for a class period. You can earn a maximum of 30 points for attendance, participation, and the online activities that are assigned. Although some of you may decide not to take the optional final exam (because you are happy with your four unit exam 4 scores), please be in class the last week of the semester (attendance will count more) for the student presentations, etc. Extra Credit Points You can earn extra credit points (up to 8 pts) for doing the following activities: 1) You can be the TA (teaching assistant) for one class period and earn extra credit. 2) We will have 2-3 speakers (on relationships) on campus this fall, and if you attend a talk and write up a 2-page reaction, you can receive extra credit. You can do this for multiple speakers. 3) You may have the opportunity to engage in a laboratory research study and earn extra credit. 4) There may be other opportunities to participate in research and earn extra credit. 5) There may be some online activities assigned 2-3 times for which you can earn extra credit. See Appendix 2 for more information on the opportunities to earn extra credit. In addition, more information will become available for these extra credit opportunities as the semester goes on. GRADING Exams (100 pts/each x 4) = 400 pts 6 Assignments = 70 pts Classroom Attendance, Participation = 30 pts & Online activities Total = 500 pts (A = 90% or 450 pts, B = 80% or 400 pts, C = 70% or 350 pts, D = 60% or 300 pts; F = below 300) REMINDERS • Attendance at every class period is strongly recommended. If you miss a class, you miss information that is necessary to succeed in the class. In addition, part of your grade is based on attendance, discussion, and participation in in-class activities. • Please respect class times. Arrive on time and do not plan to leave early. • If you need to miss a class or a portion of a class, please learn from classmates what you missed. Because information in class is presented in a variety of formats (PowerPoint, discussion, student presentation), it’s impossible for me to give notes to those who are absent (and also unfair to those who are present).

Reis is professor of psychology in the Department of Clinical and Social Sciences in Psychology at the Uni- versity of Rochester. He first studied human relationships at the City College of New York, where he received a B.S. in 1970. Reis subsequently received a Ph.D. from New York University in 1975. A former president of the International Society for the Study of Personal Relationships (2000– 2001), he served as editor of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Interpersonal and Group Processes (1986–1990) and is currently editor of Current Directions in Psychological Science. After 10 years as its executive offi- cer (1995–2004), the Society for Personality and Social Psychology awarded him the Distinguished Service Award (2006) and elected him as president (2007). One way to address this limitation is to offer a Conceptualization standardized set of clinical targets for FAP. The current study details a method of identifying standardized Contextual behavioral science treatment targets in FAP using the Awareness, Courage, and Love (ACL) model. The applicability of the model Relationship science was assessed by evaluating the degree to which previously identified clinical targets in FAP research correspond with the proposed specific categories of the ACL model. There is an 83.67% fit between past idiographic targets and current standardized targets. We discuss how ACL may be clinically useful and encourage more integrative treatment development for FAP. 1.
