Retorciendo Palabras.

Race, Nation, and Popular Culture in Cuban New York City and Miami, 1940-1960
Authentic Assertions, Commercial Concessions: Race, Nation, and Popular Culture in Cuban New York City and Miami, 1940-1960 by Christina D. Abreu A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (American Culture) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Jesse Hoffnung-Garskof Associate Professor Richard Turits Associate Professor Yeidy Rivero Associate Professor Anthony P. Mora © Christina D. Abreu 2012 For my parents. ii Acknowledgments Not a single word of this dissertation would have made it to paper without the support of an incredible community of teachers, mentors, colleagues, and friends at the University of Michigan. I am forever grateful to my dissertation committee: Jesse Hoffnung-Garskof, Richard Turits, Yeidy Rivero, and Anthony Mora. Jesse, your careful and critical reading of my chapters challenged me to think more critically and to write with more precision and clarity. From very early on, you treated me as a peer and have always helped put things – from preliminary exams and research plans to the ups and downs of the job market – in perspective. Your advice and example has made me a better writer and a better historian, and for that I thank you. Richard, your confidence in my work has been a constant source of encouragement. Thank you for helping me to realize that I had something important to say. Yeidy, your willingness to join my dissertation committee before you even arrived on campus says a great deal about your intellectual generosity. ¡Mil Gracias! Anthony, watching you in the classroom and interact with students offered me an opportunity to see a great teacher in action. -

Rubén Blades
Rubén Blades Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna (born July 16, 1948), professionally known as Rubén Blades (Spanish pronunciation: [ruˈβen ˈblaðes], but [ˈbleðz] in Panama and within the family[1]), is a Panamanian salsa singer, songwriter, actor, Latin jazz musician, and activist, performing musically most often in the Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz genres. As songwriter, Blades brought the lyrical sophistication of Central American nueva canción and Cuban nueva trova as well as experimental tempos and politically inspired Nuyorican salsa to his music, creating thinking persons’ (salsa) dance music. Blades has composed dozens of musical hits, the most famous of which is “Pedro Navaja,” a song about a neighborhood thug who appears to die during a robbery (his song “Sorpresas” continues the story), inspired by “Mack the Knife.” He also composed and sings “Patria” (Fatherland), which many Panamanians consider their second national anthem. He is an icon in Panama and is much admired throughout Latin America and Spain, and managed to attract 18% of the vote in his failed attempt to win the Panamanian presidency in 1994. In September 2004, he was appointed minister of tourism by Panamanian president Martín Torrijos for a five-year term. He holds a Licenciado en Derecho law degree from the University of Panama and an LL.M in International Law from Harvard University. He is married to singer Luba Mason. Family history and early life Blades was born in Panama City, Panama, the son of Cuban musician and actress Anoland Díaz (real surname Bellido de Luna), and Colombian Rubén Darío Blades, Sr., a gifted athlete, percussionist and later a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics in Washington, DC. -
Renato Sets It Straight: the Panamanian Roots of Reggaetón
Peter Szok Renato Sets It Straight: An Interview on the Diffuse Roots of Reggaeton Texas Christian University, EE.UU. [email protected] Introduction An intense debate has arisen over the last decade regarding the origins and the development of reggaeton. As Wayne Marshall notes in a recent publication, the discussion has often taken on a heated and “linear” quality, with participants linking the genre’s spectacular emergence to pre- existing, nationalist narratives, while ignoring its global and fluid character, the “migration” of its artists, and the “reach of the media” which impacts its subjects simultaneously in various regions (Marshall 22). Puerto Ricans have most successfully produced this dance music which draws heavily on aspects of commercialized African diasporic culture and which is now heard and performed across Latin America, the United States, Europe, and many other parts of the world. As a result, they and others tend to present the rhythm as having come “straight outta Puerto Rico,” as implied in a 2008 documentary which ties reggaeton’s rise to the island’s youth and popular culture (Savidge and Chankin). However, Panamanian musicians are equally adamant that the musical form is essentially their creation and that its roots lie firmly in the traditions of the isthmus’ Afro-Antillean population. “We invented it in Panama,” insisted salsero Rubén Blades, during a press conference in Puerto Rico, while serving as his country’s Minister of Tourism. Speaking in what might be regarded as enemy territory, Blades identified reggaeton as part of his republic’s patrimony, and he called on Panamanians to abandon any prejudices and to recognize its importance in their society (“Rubén Blades” s.p.).
