2012 BOSTON BRUINS-MIAA ICE HOCKEY SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD WINNERS

For the tenth consecutive year, the MIAA and Boston Bruins have partnered to honor a student-athlete from every boys and girls high school ice hockey league in the state for best exemplifying a commitment to the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the season. These student-athletes were selected by representatives of their league according to the following award criteria:

• An exemplary record of complying, both in spirit and letter, with all league and MIAA rules and regulations during the season. • A demonstrated record of respectfully accepting the rulings of game officials during the season. • A record of conduct, on and off the ice that brings honor to self, team, school, and community. • An exhibited commitment to teamwork by providing all members with recognition of their talents, an opportunity to contribute them to the team, and a spirit of camaraderie. • A demonstrated respect for opponents before, during, and after games.

The recipients of the 2012 Boston Bruins-MIAA Sportsmanship Awards are listed below. These student-athletes will be honored on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the TD Garden during the second intermission of the Boston Bruins game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

GIRLS LEAGUES

Molly McNamara Wellesley High School Bay State Conference A senior center, Molly McNamara was selected as this year’s Boston Bruins-MIAA Sportsmanship Award winner from the Bay State Conference. She served as a team captain this past season. Wellesley Head Coach George Campbell says, “Molly’s leadership off the ice was as evident as her skill on the ice. She, along with the other captains, guided us through the good time and the rough spots, (while) her communication with the coaching staff on behalf of the team was excellent.”

Shealyn Anthony Austin Preparatory School Catholic Central League A senior forward, Shealyn Anthony had the fewest number of penalties on the Austin Prep team this season. She was selected as this year’s representative from the Catholic Central League for her record of conduct that brings honor to the team, school and community. Shealyn is also the recipient of the Austin Preparatory School Girls Hockey Award of Excellence and the Catholic Central League Sportsmanship Award.

Emily Lafond Notre Dame Academy Catholic Conference A senior center, Emily Lafond has served as a two-year captain of the Notre Dame Academy ice hockey team. Over four seasons of varsity ice hockey, Emily scored a school record 103 points. Notre Dame Academy Head Coach Ashley Parker says, “Being a first year head coach, Emily is what you look for in a captain not just to help me off the ice, but to be a true leader and demonstrate what true sportsmanship is on the ice. The girls looked up to Emily and knew that she would do everything she could to bring out the best talent and teamwork from each person on the team.”

Katie St. George Newton South High School Merrimack Valley Conference/ A senior forward, Katie St. George served as an assistant captain of the Newton South team this season. Newton South Head Coach Meg Lloyd says, “Katie St. George has been an exemplary student-athlete for as long as I have known her. She is a rule follower by nature, is kind and caring to her teammates as well as those she is competing against. Katie is always smiling, always working hard and always looking out of those who are around her.”

Sara Lehman Lexington High School Middlesex League A junior left wing, Sara Lehman is an extremely active member of the Lexington community. She is involved with several clubs and activities, including Best Buddies, Peer Mentors, National Honor Society and the Lexington Youth Commission. Lexington Athletic Director Naomi Martin says, “Sara Lehman has been a fantastic student, athlete, leader and community servant here at LHS over the past three years. In her efforts as an athlete on our school teams, she has worked tirelessly at any task presented to her and is invaluable to our programs here at LHS. Her punctuality and attention to detail have made her a role model and the standard to which her teammates judge themselves. Sara is intrinsically motivated to always better herself, and more importantly, any organization or team that she is a part of.”

Kelsey Powers Duxbury High School SEMGHL - Coastal A senior forward, Kelsey Powers is a four-year member of the Duxbury High School girls’ ice hockey team. Duxbury Head Coach Friend Weiler says, “Kelsey is a true team player and always puts the needs of her team before her own. I am proud to have Kelsey Powers as a member of my team and I feel that she exemplifies the high standards that the MIAA promotes. I believe that character and sportsmanship go hand in hand and Kelsey has been an example of that throughout her high school career.”

Maggie Travers Scituate High School SEMGHL - East A senior center, Maggie Travers has served as a captain of the Scituate High School team for four seasons. This past season, she scored her 100th career point while only committing one minor penalty. Scituate Head Coach Caitlyn Donnelly says, “Over the past six years, Maggie has seen the program from its inception through to our first season qualifying for the MIAA State Tournament. Maggie has grown as a leader over these six years and is the glue that keeps the team positive and more of a family than a team. She brings out the best in her teammates and is the first to recognize each girl’s strengths and contributions.”

Michelle McNeil Canton High School SEMGHL - West A senior forward, Michelle McNeil served as a captain on the Canton High School team. She accumulated only one minor penalty this past season. Canton Head Coach Kelly Rider says, “She is an exceptional leader on and off the ice and always conducts herself in a positive manner. She is proud to be a successful student-athlete and to represent her school. In addition to this she is an outstanding member of the community and excels in the classroom.”

BOYS LEAGUES

Cody Murray Falmouth High School Atlantic Coast League A senior defenseman, Cody Murray served as a captain on the Falmouth High School team. He worked his way back on the ice after suffering a severe knee injury in football. Cody is known for his dedication and commitment to teamwork, by providing teammates with recognition of their talents, an opportunity to contribute to the team, and a spirit of camaraderie.

Matthew Brown Norwood High School Bay State Conference A senior at Norwood High School, Matt suffered a severe injury during a game in 2010 and has been confined to a wheel chair. This tragedy has not stopped his spirit, as Matt has been an inspiration to many in the Norwood community. Norwood Head Coach Bill Clifford says, “Matt has been a true leader at Norwood High School and the entire community. His upbeat personality makes everyone around him feel special. He uses his handicap to inspire everyone who comes in contact with him. I can think of no other student athlete more deserving of this award than Matt Brown.”

Jake Adams New Bedford High School Big Three A senior center, Jake Adams only received one penalty during his two seasons on the varsity team. He is known throughout the New Bedford community for his great leadership and citizenship. New Bedford Head Coach John Sullivan says, “Jake has always been a team player. He has been a role model with the underclassmen, always talking to them about what it’s like to be a Whaler hockey player on the ice and in the classroom.”

Anthony Bruno East Boston High School Boston City League A junior forward, Anthony Bruno is known as a leader on the East Boston team. He has not received a major, misconduct or game disqualification in his two years of varsity ice hockey. East Boston Head Coach Bob Anthony says, “Anthony’s conduct off the ice is what other players should live up to. He gives of himself to the freshmen to show them true leadership on and off the ice. He was also a key person in the community with his help during the Breast Cancer Hockey Tournament for the Boston Medical Center the past two years.”

Jonathan Gravallese North Reading High School Cape Ann League A senior forward, Jonathan Gravallese served as a team captain on the North Reading team this season. He led the team in scoring and consistently exemplified sportsmanship in his conduct on and off the ice. North Reading Head Coach John Giuliotti says, “Jonathan is an excellent role model for other, younger student-athletes as well. He expects a lot of himself and, consequently, inspires others to work hard and to represent positively their community, their school, their families, and themselves.”

Robert Liberge Bishop Fenwick High School Catholic Central League – Large A senior forward, Robert Liberge has been a four-year varsity player at Bishop Fenwick High School. He served as a team captain during his senior year and was a key contributor as a junior, leading the program to their first MIAA tournament victory in twenty years. Bishop Fenwick Head Coach Dan Lynch says, “Bob Liberge is a proven leader who will always be remembered as a player who gave his all to the game of hockey and the future development of the Bishop Fenwick hockey program. We at Bishop Fenwick wish to recognize Bob for his commitment to the school and the game of hockey.”

Kyle Edmonds Rockport High School Commonwealth Athletic Conference A junior defenseman, Kyle served as a captain on the Rockport team that advanced to the semi-finals in the MIAA Division 3 North Tournament this season. Rockport Head Coach Derek Papalegis says, “He is a disciplined player. That’s why we put the ‘A’ on his jersey. He’s not a vocal leader but he leads by example. The way he plays is the right way, he always gives 110% and he does the little things. He makes smart passes, he will give up his body to make a play. You don’t necessarily have to be vocal to be an on ice leader, he does it by doing the right things.”

Brandon Hennessy Nashoba Regional High School Coughlin Conference A sophomore forward, Brandon Hennessy is described by Nashoba Head Coach Steve Kendall as “the ultimate team-first guy.” Brandon is known for the respect that he shows teammates, opponents and officials. Coach Kendall says, “He is a guy to whom I can point as an example of what can be accomplished with effort and hard work. He is the same in the classroom. He works hard on every assignment, asking questions to clarify and making sure, he meets expectations. He is a true leader, even as an underclassman.”

Nelson Dickson Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Eastern Athletic Conference A senior defenseman, Nelson Dickson has been a team captain for two seasons. He played an instrumental part in three community service projects that the team participated in this season including a “Stuff-a-Bus” food drive, a Habitat for Humanity initiative and a Domestic Violence awareness project. Martha’s Vineyard Head Coach Matthew Mincone says, “Nelson also began a tradition where before each game he would go to the opposing coaches’ bench and shake their hands. He was also aware when the game ended that a true sportsman knew how to learn from losing and how to appreciate winning without flaunting his actions or those of the team’s.”

Michael Duclos Greenfield High School Fay Division A junior defenseman, Michael Duclos served as a team captain for the Greenfield High School team this past season. He spends time as a hockey official and volunteers as a coach for the Franklin County Hockey Association Learn to Skate and House League programs. Michael is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, and is ranked first in his class academically. Greenfield Head Coach Michael Duclos, Sr. says “Michael is well respected by his peers in and out of high school and I am not saying that because he is my son, but because he treats people with respect and has been raised to be respectful.”

Charlie O’Leary Somerville High School Greater Boston League A senior forward, Charlie O’Leary has been a four-year member of the varsity hockey team at Somerville High School. This season, he led by example as a team captain and gave back to the community by assisting with youth hockey and learn to skate programs. Somerville Head Coach Chuck Allen says, “I truly believe that Charlie O’Leary deserves this award, and as his coach the way he acts to his teammates especially the underclassmen, his opponents and the officials is outstanding and respectful.”

Cam Loehr Lee Middle & High School Hennessy League A senior center, Cam Loehr has been a member of the Mount Everett High School-Lee Middle & High School co-operative team for the past three years. He was honored by the Berkshire Chapter of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association as the recipient of the 2012 Donald Troy Sr. Sportsmanship Award, one of the most prestigious awards given to a Berkshire County high school student-athlete. NIHOA Berkshire Chapter Vice President Thomas Goggins says, “Mr. Loehr always showed mutual respect for the on ice officials and played the game with respect for team, opposing players and coaches. He often was the first player after the game to make sure he shook hands with the game officials and thank them for their hard work.”

Brendan Burns North Attleboro High School Hockomock League A senior center, Brendan Burns is known as a fantastic leader on and off the ice. He excels academically with one of the most rigorous academic schedules offered at North Attleboro High School. North Attleboro Head Coach Stephen Snizek says, “Brendan was the go to guy. He always knew what to say to inspire the team and always reminded players to either win or lose with class. As a coach, I always looked to him to lead our team on the ice and set a positive example off the ice.”

Caleb Dalterio Cape Cod Academy Independent Schools A sophomore forward, Caleb Dalterio served as a team captain on the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School-Cape Cod Academy co-operative team this season. He did not receive a single penalty this season while logging many minutes of ice time with his line mates on the penalty killing and power play units. Cape Cod Tech/Cape Cod Academy Head Coach Scott Rebello says, “Caleb was chosen by his peers to be a captain because he is always leading by example. His skills on the ice are second to none and his work ethic is an example for all players to follow.”

Pat Houghton Westford Academy Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League – Division 1 A senior defenseman, Pat Houghton has been elected by his teammates as a team captain for the past two seasons. He is known for his strong work ethic, drive to succeed and friendly demeanor. Pat helped lead the Westford team to a number two seed in the MIAA Division 1 North Hockey Tournament while also participating in two team community service projects. Westford Academy Head Coach Bob Carpenter says, “As an athlete, Pat is focused and dedicated with a great inner drive to succeed. Beyond being a very skilled player, Pat displays great character and dedication. He is constantly working to improve his skills and serves as a role model for others.”

Mike O’Brien Concord-Carlisle High School Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League – Division 2 A senior forward, Mike O’Brien was selected as a MVC/DCL – Division 2 All-Star this past season. He served as a team captain and was also selected as the recipient of the league’s James Mulloy Sportsmanship Award. He will attend The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania next year. Concord-Carlisle Athletic Director Barry Haley says, “Mike O’Brien is an outstanding student-athlete at Concord-Carlisle High School. He is a leader and a well respected team captain of multiple athletic teams.”

Max Isberg Newton South High School Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League – Division 3 A senior forward, Max Isberg has been a four-year member of the Newton South varsity team. He is known among teammates for his leadership and positive example. Newton South Head Coach Chris Ryberg says, “Max truly exemplified sportsmanship. He was a leader both on and off the ice, whether it was playing on the power play, or in the classroom earning a 4.71 grade point average. Max didn’t miss a game or practice in four years and set an example for every member of our program to follow.”

Brian Gramolini Belmont High School Middlesex League A senior forward, Brian Gramolini has been a four-year member of the Belmont High School hockey team. He represented the team as a captain for the past two seasons, helping to coordinate several community events, including Wreaths Across America, pancake breakfasts, bean suppers and a Christmas tree benefit for the Lions Club Organization. Belmont Director of Athletics Jim Davis says, “Brian has shown himself not only to be a fine student-athlete but also a very coachable player. He is exactly the type of player that every coach wants. His can do attitude coupled with his ability to motivate his peers reflects why he has been so successful in the past and will continue that success in the future.”

Nick Strangie Danvers High School Northeastern Conference – North A senior defenseman, Nick Strangie served as a team captain this past season. He was recognized as a Northeastern Conference All-Star and helped lead the Danvers team to a 15-5 regular season record. Nick has also been very involved with the local youth hockey program and with the Special Olympics. Danvers Head Coach Kevin Brown says, “On the ice Nick’s effort was always at the highest level both at practice and during the game. His respect for the game and playing within the rules were always a priority. In school Nick is an Honor Roll student who leads by example in our team study hall. His conduct away from the school and rink is what you would ask for in any student athlete.”

Michael Harper Marblehead High School Northeastern Conference – South A senior goaltender, Michael Harper is known for his leadership. He served as a team captain and has earned NEC All-Star honors. Marblehead Athletic Director and Head Coach Mark Tarmey says, “Michael is the epitome of academic, athletic and community leadership at Marblehead High School. For Michael Harper, leadership and sportsmanship are constants. I cannot think of one single instance over the past four years when either of these traits was brought into question. I can honestly attest that it has been a pleasure to serve as Michael’s athletic director and high school hockey coach for the past four years.”

Jack O’Donoghue Scituate High School Patriot League A senior defenseman, Jack O’Donoghue led the Scituate High School team in scoring this season. He is a three- sport, varsity athlete and three-season team captain that will earn 12 varsity letters by the end of his high school career. Scituate Head Coach Mike Breen says, “Jack is a young man of strong integrity and character on and off the ice. He has volunteered extensive hours of community service including work with youth sports programs, church and My Brother’s Keeper. Jack is a role model of good sportsmanship displaying a high level of respect for teammates, coaches, opponents and referees.”

Sean Burns Algonquin Regional High School Roy Conference A senior defenseman, Sean Burns has been a member of the Algonquin team for the past two seasons. He is a team leader with a tremendous amount of respect from his teammates. Algonquin Head Coach Scott Ellison says, “Sean’s unwavering work ethic, respect for opponents, mature locker room presence, and ultra steady defensive play have set him apart as a leader amongst his peers. Sean has influence both on and off the ice and that is critical for a team’s success.”

Tommy Davis Bourne High School South Coast Conference A junior defenseman, Tommy Davis has only received one minor penalty in his entire high school hockey career. He has received much praise from opposing coaches and officials for his sportsmanship and behavior on the ice. Tommy was selected to receive the South Coast Conference Individual Sportsmanship Award. Bourne Athletic Director Scott Ashworth says, “Tommy’s character and personal qualities are his strongest assets. He is respected by both the faculty and student body who recognize his honesty, leadership and concern for others. He is a true role model for all younger hockey players in the town of Bourne.”

Patrick Williamson Bellingham High School Tri Valley League A senior forward, Patrick Williamson served as a captain on the Bellingham High School team. He is known for his leadership by example and his ability to serve as a liaison between teammates and the coaching staff. Bellingham Athletic Director Leo Dalpe says, “Patrick is always respectful with game officials, our own coaching staff, opposing coaches, and players from the opposing teams. In fact, other coaches in the Tri Valley League have often commented to our coach about Patrick’s demonstrations of sportsmanship.”
