2012 Boston Bruins-Miaa Ice Hockey Sportsmanship Award Winners

2012 BOSTON BRUINS-MIAA ICE HOCKEY SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD WINNERS For the tenth consecutive year, the MIAA and Boston Bruins have partnered to honor a student-athlete from every boys and girls high school ice hockey league in the state for best exemplifying a commitment to the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the season. These student-athletes were selected by representatives of their league according to the following award criteria: • An exemplary record of complying, both in spirit and letter, with all league and MIAA rules and regulations during the season. • A demonstrated record of respectfully accepting the rulings of game officials during the season. • A record of conduct, on and off the ice that brings honor to self, team, school, and community. • An exhibited commitment to teamwork by providing all members with recognition of their talents, an opportunity to contribute them to the team, and a spirit of camaraderie. • A demonstrated respect for opponents before, during, and after games. The recipients of the 2012 Boston Bruins-MIAA Sportsmanship Awards are listed below. These student-athletes will be honored on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the TD Garden during the second intermission of the Boston Bruins game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. GIRLS LEAGUES Molly McNamara Wellesley High School Bay State Conference A senior center, Molly McNamara was selected as this year’s Boston Bruins-MIAA Sportsmanship Award winner from the Bay State Conference. She served as a team captain this past season. Wellesley Head Coach George Campbell says, “Molly’s leadership off the ice was as evident as her skill on the ice. She, along with the other captains, guided us through the good time and the rough spots, (while) her communication with the coaching staff on behalf of the team was excellent.” Shealyn Anthony Austin Preparatory School Catholic Central League A senior forward, Shealyn Anthony had the fewest number of penalties on the Austin Prep team this season. She was selected as this year’s representative from the Catholic Central League for her record of conduct that brings honor to the team, school and community. Shealyn is also the recipient of the Austin Preparatory School Girls Hockey Award of Excellence and the Catholic Central League Sportsmanship Award. Emily Lafond Notre Dame Academy Catholic Conference A senior center, Emily Lafond has served as a two-year captain of the Notre Dame Academy ice hockey team. Over four seasons of varsity ice hockey, Emily scored a school record 103 points. Notre Dame Academy Head Coach Ashley Parker says, “Being a first year head coach, Emily is what you look for in a captain not just to help me off the ice, but to be a true leader and demonstrate what true sportsmanship is on the ice. The girls looked up to Emily and knew that she would do everything she could to bring out the best talent and teamwork from each person on the team.” Katie St. George Newton South High School Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League A senior forward, Katie St. George served as an assistant captain of the Newton South team this season. Newton South Head Coach Meg Lloyd says, “Katie St. George has been an exemplary student-athlete for as long as I have known her. She is a rule follower by nature, is kind and caring to her teammates as well as those she is competing against. Katie is always smiling, always working hard and always looking out of those who are around her.” Sara Lehman Lexington High School Middlesex League A junior left wing, Sara Lehman is an extremely active member of the Lexington community. She is involved with several clubs and activities, including Best Buddies, Peer Mentors, National Honor Society and the Lexington Youth Commission. Lexington Athletic Director Naomi Martin says, “Sara Lehman has been a fantastic student, athlete, leader and community servant here at LHS over the past three years. In her efforts as an athlete on our school teams, she has worked tirelessly at any task presented to her and is invaluable to our programs here at LHS. Her punctuality and attention to detail have made her a role model and the standard to which her teammates judge themselves. Sara is intrinsically motivated to always better herself, and more importantly, any organization or team that she is a part of.” Kelsey Powers Duxbury High School SEMGHL - Coastal A senior forward, Kelsey Powers is a four-year member of the Duxbury High School girls’ ice hockey team. Duxbury Head Coach Friend Weiler says, “Kelsey is a true team player and always puts the needs of her team before her own. I am proud to have Kelsey Powers as a member of my team and I feel that she exemplifies the high standards that the MIAA promotes. I believe that character and sportsmanship go hand in hand and Kelsey has been an example of that throughout her high school career.” Maggie Travers Scituate High School SEMGHL - East A senior center, Maggie Travers has served as a captain of the Scituate High School team for four seasons. This past season, she scored her 100th career point while only committing one minor penalty. Scituate Head Coach Caitlyn Donnelly says, “Over the past six years, Maggie has seen the program from its inception through to our first season qualifying for the MIAA State Tournament. Maggie has grown as a leader over these six years and is the glue that keeps the team positive and more of a family than a team. She brings out the best in her teammates and is the first to recognize each girl’s strengths and contributions.” Michelle McNeil Canton High School SEMGHL - West A senior forward, Michelle McNeil served as a captain on the Canton High School team. She accumulated only one minor penalty this past season. Canton Head Coach Kelly Rider says, “She is an exceptional leader on and off the ice and always conducts herself in a positive manner. She is proud to be a successful student-athlete and to represent her school. In addition to this she is an outstanding member of the community and excels in the classroom.” BOYS LEAGUES Cody Murray Falmouth High School Atlantic Coast League A senior defenseman, Cody Murray served as a captain on the Falmouth High School team. He worked his way back on the ice after suffering a severe knee injury in football. Cody is known for his dedication and commitment to teamwork, by providing teammates with recognition of their talents, an opportunity to contribute to the team, and a spirit of camaraderie.
