BATH v. SOUTH WALES POLICE Much has been both written and spoken on the subject of 'polarisation within English rugby in recent years'. For those Clubs on the inside, life can be exciting and rewarding. Yet those fellows on the fringe of things may sometimes wonder if they will ever 'get in on the right side' once senior Merit Tables and so forth become the established norm. It is an understandable question, the answer to which may be provided by tonight's visitors in the shape and not inconsiderable form of the South Wales Police. Looking back not so many years and observers who would include this Club among the elite of Welsh rugby were perhaps few in number. But what a difference now! They are not merely a good Welsh side; they are frequently outstanding, with the likes of centres Richard Donovan and Bleddyn Bowen in their ranks. Well, 'the Police' are showing not only a clean pair of heels to many an opponent, but in addition are providing proof that the 'seemingly' less fashionable can get their act impressively together and break through the outer walls of the game at the top level. To add conviction to it all, Police did some horrible mischief to Cheltenham last weekend to the tune of 48 - 4. We shall not therefore be taking their visit lightly. Encouraged as we are by a 'nice one' over the Wizards on Saturday, tonight nonetheless will see some of our United boys showing their paces in 1st team ranks. Now United too enjoyed their little romp last weekend, recording an impressive 51 - 3 success in the process. And interestingly, their opponents just happened to be Cheltenham's 2nd string, thus adding an element of intrigue into tonight's clash. Finally, England run out at Twickenham with 6 Bath Boys in the white shirt, namely Richard Hill (Capt.), , Simon Halliday, , Nigel Redman and John Hall (not forgetting reserve Graham Dawel. Good luck lads . . . England expects!! Harry W. Barstow

HEYVVOOD INSURANCE BROKERS have sponsored this evening's game and have also given a bottle of Scotch whisky for the lucky programme prize. We are very grateful for their generosity and support. Demand is brisk for coach seats to Twickenham on Saturday to see the England XV v. Japan match. Please see Frank Cottle at the Club Shop this evening or telephone him on Bath 311359. Match tickets are also available. There will not be a supporters' coach going to Liverpool. We hope you are enjoying the articles on the rules of our game. Any comments on these would be welcome. The next one will appear in the match programme on Saturday, October 25th. Clive Howard
