Although the act of riding a wave started as a religious/cultural tradition, surfing rapidly transformed into a global water sport. The popularity of surfing is the result of events, innovations, influential people (http://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/9754themostinfluentialpeopleto thebirthofsurfing), and technological developments. Early surfers had to challenge the power of the oceans with heavy, finless surfboards. Today, surfing has evolved into a hightech extreme sport, in which hydrodynamics and materials play vital roles. Surfboard craftsmen have improved their techniques; wave riders have bettered their skills. The present and future of surfing can only be understood if we look back at its glorious past. From the rudimentary "caballitos de totora" to computerized shaping machines, there's an incredible trunk full of memories, culture, achievements and inventions to be rifled through. In the caption, he thanked everyone involved with the event for an unforgettable experience, and applauded Owen Wright S and John John Florence for their brash performances. Slater failed to specifically congratulate event‐winner Gabriel Medina, however. This perceived snub triggered an avalanche of nasty remarks, snowballing into a 1,000‐plus thread of warring comments from fans, friends, and haters. Nothing new here, of course, when it comes to the cacophonous cesspool of response that burbles below almost all content posted online: the usual dark, toxic brew of human folly, a global melting pot of sycophantic fan worship, mockingbird’s songs, troll‐thrown knives, and frat boy sexual harassment. What seemed more noteworthy in this instance was the caption that accompanied Slater’s next photo. “My next post was going to be dedicated to @gabrielmedina but I think I’ll let you wait for that one since it doesn’t sound like you’re all done telling me off yet.

Stuart Ayres Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Minister for Sport Friday, 24 June 2016 WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS HEADING TO KIAMA Some of the best international junior surfers will be heading to Kiama early next year as the WSL (World Surf League) World Junior Championships have been secured for the region in 2017 and 2018, the NSW Government announced today. Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres, said the event would give Kiama worldwide exposure, and attract thousands of visitors to the region. “The WSL World Junior Championships is the premier event for young surfers, and will see the very best athletes coming to Kiama to compete. It will be a huge boost to the South Coast, confirming the region’s reputation as a must visit for surfers,” Mr Ayres said. “From 2017-2018 the event will attract more than 2000 people to Kiama, with visitors estimated to spend almost $1.8 million. Cocaine + Surfing: Reviewed by Jack Ryan, Gettysburg College Abstract If you seek a conclusive answer to the question that seems to anchor Chas Smith's Cocaine + Surfing: A Sordid History of Surfing's Greatest Love Affair, "Did surfing and cocaine start together in Peru and never leave each other's embrace?," you will be disappointed. In his preface, Smith discusses the death of Andy Irons, the three- time world surfing champion from Hawaii who died November 2, 2010, alone in a Dallas hotel room of cardiac arrest brought on by cocaine abuse. Irons was thirty-two years old. According to Smith, no one in the cosseted surfing world was surprised: "Drugs and surfing, especially cocaine, felt synonymous with professional surfing those eight-odd years ago" (15).

  • ESA Judges Course
EASTERN SURFING ASSOCIATION JUDGE’S COURSE-November 2006 INTRODUCTION The role of a judge in a surfing contest is to decide which surfer performs the closest to the judging criteria in any heat. It is essential, therefore, that judges have experience and knowledge to give them confidence to obtain the correct results. The improvement made in the sport of competitive surfing over the last three years cannot be attributed to improvements in equipment and increased levels of surfer’s performance alone. The increased success of surfing as a competitive sport can also be directly linked to improvements and refinements made to the competitive rules and judging criteria. Any competitive system is only as good as the people who are charged with the responsibility of determining the outcome of the competition. IE: THE JUDGES. Judges who genuinely wish to improve their capacity to determine between surfers who perform closest to the judging criteria and those who do not, need to be prepared to continually monitor their effectiveness as judges of competitive surfing. This course is designed to give a basic understanding of the surfing criteria and guidelines required for sound judging. THE SURFING CRITERIA "A surfer must perform radical controlled maneuvers in the critical section of a wave with Speed, Power and Flow to maximize scoring potential. Innovative / Progressive surfing as well as Variety of Repertoire (maneuvers), will be taken into consideration when rewarding points for waves ridden. The surfer who executes this criteria with the maximum Degree of Difficulty and Commitment on the waves shall be rewarded with the higher scores." Distinct and important Criteria The fundamental importance of the surfing criteria is that each judge understands what he is looking for and each surfer knows the points on which he is going to be judged.

Youth Perceptions of the Olympic Games: Attitudes Towards Action Sports at the YOG and Olympic Games Associate Professors Belinda Wheaton and Holly Thorpe University of Waikato, New Zealand Final report for The IOC Olympic Studies Centre Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme 2015/2016 Award June 2016 ABSTRACT The IOC faces a significant challenge, that is, how to stay relevant to contemporary youth amid changing sport participation and consumption patterns and growing competition from mega-events such as the X Games. This project critically examined youth perceptions of the relevance and significance of the Olympic Games, and the Youth Olympic Games. It focused particularly on the attitudes of participants in newer, action sports (i.e., skateboarding, surfing, BMX, snowboarding, parkour, kite-surfing), as well as the cultural processes leading up to and following the short-listing of surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Online surveys, media analysis and interviews provide rich and nuanced insights into the experiences, attitudes, opinions, debates and politics that influence youths’ current and future participation in, and consumption of, the Olympic Games. Ultimately, this project reveals generational differences in attitudes towards action sports inclusion in the Olympic Games, as well as changing perceptions among those working most closely with the IOC to prepare their sports for possible Olympic inclusion. Furthermore, this report highlights the power and potential of action sports inclusion into the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, as well as some of the ongoing and new challenges for such significant changes to both the infrastructure of action sports cultures and industries, and to the transforming landscape of Olympic sport.
