The Legacy of Sir William Lyons (1922-1985)
The legacy of Sir William Lyons (1922-1985) The story begins in the early 1920s in Blackpool, England. William Walmsley was building motorcycle sidecars when he met his young neighbour – and fellow motorcycle enthusiast – William Lyons. With their shared passion for motorcycles, it was logical step for the pair to go into business together. In 1922, shortly after Lyons‟ 21st birthday, they founded the Swallow Sidecar Company, selling Walmsley‟s hand-built designs which were distinguished by their beautiful streamlined shape. Above: William Walmsley (left) and a young William Lyons (right) together with their sidecar Business boomed, and the company expanded, adding car body repairs alongside their sidecar business, before expanding into building car bodies (and changing its name to Swallow Sidecar and Coachbuilding Company) which were bolted onto the chassis of existing models like the Austin Seven (1927) and later, the Fiat Tipo 509A (1929). In 1927, now firmly established as a coachbuilder, the company dropped „Sidecar‟ from its name to become simply Swallow Coachbuilding Company and the following year, with business prospering, and needing to be closer to England‟s automotive hub, the company moved to larger premises in Coventry. In 1931, Swallow launched two new models, the SS I and SS II, built on a chassis made by The Standard Motor Company, with competitive pricing, despite their premium styling. In 1934, co-founder Walmsley left the company, leaving Lyons at the helm. He renamed it S.S. Cars (Standard Swallow) and created an engineering department, hiring a talented young engineer, William Heynes, to oversee the development of new models. -
A Jaguar XJS Megszületésének Története
A Jaguar XJS megszületésének története. -
RCHS Chronology of Modern Transport in the British Isles 1945
RCHS Chronology of Modern Transport in the British Isles 1945–2015 Introduction This chronology is intended to set out some of the more significant events in the recent history of transport and communication, with particular reference to public transport, in the British Isles since the end of 1944. It cannot hope to cover the closure or opening of every branch railway or canal, the sale of every bus company, nor the coming and going of every pertinent office holder. The hope is that it does contain details of the principal legislative and organisational changes affecting transport – in particular the shifts between private and public ownership which have characterised the industry within this period – together with some notable ‘firsts’, ‘lasts’ and other significant events, especially those which exhibit trends. A very few overseas events are included (in italics), either because they had a British relationship, or for comparative purposes. Conventions Dates are, where appropriate, the first or last occasion on which an ordinary member of the public could make full use of the facility: official and partial openings on different dates are in general confined to parentheses; and ‘closed with effect from’ (wef) dates are quoted only where the actual last day of service has not been certainly established. Dates assigned to statutes are those of assent unless stated otherwise. ‘First’, ‘last’ or similar qualifiers mean ‘in Britain’ unless otherwise indicated. ‘Commercial’ is used, rather loosely, as a qualifier to exclude experimental, enthusiast, heritage, leisure or similar operations. Forms of name are those in use at the date of the event. -

Can you imagine that breathtaking moment when, in May 1953, some extraordinarily fortunate journalists first caught a glimpse of the D-Type. They actually saw the prototype – a design that Malcolm Sayer and Bill Haynes continued to craft and refine. But, even so, a legend was already in the making. By ’54 the car was ready to take on the world. As you might expect, it did so with style. When the 170mph D-Type graced the Le Mans 24 Hours race for the very first time, it tore up the previous lap record, slicing 5 seconds off the previous record. By 1955, even better was to come as the D-Type won Le Mans that year. Building on this success, when a small number of D-Type cars were made available to the public in 1956, the “Ecurie Ecosse” team were one of the buyers. Driven by Ron Flockhart and Ninian Sanderson, the “Ecurie Ecosse” car went on to win the famous race. And so to Le Mans 1957 – the year that secured the legendary status of the D-Type forever. Now armed with a 300bhp 3.8 liter engine, Ivor Bueb and Ron Flockhart’s Flag Blue No.3 car took first place on the Le Mans podium with drivers of four more D-Type cars occupying second, third, fourth and sixth positions. -
