Having Conquered the World at Rio 2016, the British Cycling Track Squad Is Already Preparing for Tokyo 2020

But it is here, inside the empty cauldron of the Manchester velodrome – the headquarters of the British Cycling track squad – that the foundations for those moments of glory were laid. Sportsaid Supported Matthew Gibson Makes Track Cycling World Championship Team
Feb 10, 2015 11:43 GMT SportsAid supported Matthew Gibson makes track cycling world championship team Photo: Guy Swarbrick/British Cycling Just weeks after winning a bronze medal on his World Cup debut, 2014 SportsAid recipient Matthew Gibson, 18 from Lymm in Cheshire, has been named as one of nine SportsAid athletes who will compete for Great Britain at this month’s track cycling world championships which get underway in Paris on February 18. Matthew’s SportsAid Award last year came from the Jaguar Academy of Sport, which he said would help him to achieve his ambition “to race for a world tour team and maybe one day ride the Tour De France.” He joins Olympic champions Laura Trott and Ed Clancy as well as 2013 SportsAid recipient Katie Archibald (SSE Next Generation) in a 19-strong team that was announced by British Cycling on Friday. Image: johnthescone via flickr Creative Commons After Team GB’s magnificent performance in the velodrome in London last summer, the track cycling world championships taking place over the next few days will certainly be an indicator as to which of our London heroes will be making the plane to Rio in four years time. There are changes abound for the British team without the herculean Chris Hoy and legendary Victoria Pendleton. So there will be some new faces around the velodrome this weekend in Minsk. One of the most notable new performers is Kian Emadi, who is taking over from Chris Hoy as the third man in the team sprint and is Britain’s cyclist of choice in the 1 kilometre time trial, previously an Olympic race and previously Chris Hoy’s event. There’s an awful lot of pressure on the 20 year old from Stoke-on- Trent. He takes the man-three spot in the team sprint, a crucial role and he has enormous shoes to fill. While Jason Kenny is the man of the moment and the cyclist who will undoubtedly shoulder the hopes of team GB in Rio in 2016, Emadi has a lot to prove at these championships. -
