MIN. BID SEPTEMBER RARE SOUL AUCTION & A DENA BARNES IF YOU EVER WALK OUT INFERNO 2002 M- 600 OF MY LIFE WD Detroit song – lark Gardenia Barnes only ever made one 45 to our knowledge and it instantly sunk without trace in the Motor City only to achieve hallowed status in a famous Lancashire dancehall six or seven years later. B JOHNNY MAE I HAVE NO CHOISE BIG HIT 105 VG++ 850 MATTHEWS In contrast to Dena on item A, Johnny Mae was a mainstay of the Detroit black music scene – in reality one of the founders. Whilst one B. Gordy went onto bigger things (to put it mildly) Matthews had little commercial success with her recordings, many labels and productions. Her sons went onto form Black Nasty of ‘Cut Your Motor Off’ Fame. C LUTHER INGRAM IF ITS ALL THE SAME TO HIB 698 WD VG++ 400 YOU BABE Three Detroit gems in a row then and its difficult to believe now that the flipside, ‘Exus Trek’, was the big side back in the day. Common sense has prevailed over the years but it has to be admitted that, even minus Luther’s vocals, it is one hell of a band track from the great, great, Richard ‘Popcorn’ Wylie. D JUNE MONDAY YOUR KIND OF LOVIN SCEPTER12160 VG++ 200 One of the rarest Northern Soul records on the famous label and an oddity being a version of a side recorded earlier by Judy Clay (one of two releases of ‘You Busted My Mind’, on the flipside of the rarer one). The producer/writer, Tommy Kaye obviously had faith in it (it’s the same backing track). E HERB WARD STRANGE CHANGE ARGO 5510 D M- 500 See the forthcoming Richard Searling book ‘Setting The Record Straight’ for the story behind this one and the move towards more soulful midtempo sounds in the Casino’s later years. F VEE GEES TALKIN JUMP OFF 2002 M- 250 A very rare 1974 release that was impossible to find even 18 months later (I tried) and very typical of the kind of thing that made it to the famed ‘last hour’ sessions at the Highland Room. And its no wonder its rare…. How is a group name like that going to sound on radio? Similar thoughts about Jodi Mathis and Little Ritchie. G CHUBBY CHECKER YOU JUST DON’T KNOW PARKWAY 965 M- 700 Seeing as our head honcho Martin Koppel was the first to find an American copy of this one back in ’76 it is appropriate that we got a copy…. and its still a very rare U.S. release. Before that event all kinds of rumours abounded e.g. it was a UK recording (with folks not knowing that Conlo Productions were a Philly production unit). Still, it is rather strange that the 45 is only on a West Coast promo (November 1965). H CLIFF NOBLES MY LOVE IS GETTING ATLANTIC 2352 VG++ 200 STRONGER WD Quite rightly revived into a dancefloor packer in the early part of the noughties and still going strong to this day. Fortunately for the scene there’s still plenty of goodies like this one waiting in the wings…. I just wish I knew which ones they are were going to be! I STANLEY MITCHELL GET IT BABY DYNAMO 111 M- 700 We can’t keep away from Detroit this month! And its another, from Motor City maestro ‘Popcorn’ Wylie – as he once said to me, ‘the B-side, always the B-side (with reference to the UK) but, as I’m sure you know, the official A-side ‘Quit Twistin’ My Arm’ is also highly regarded these days. J JUDY FREEMAN & HOLD ON RCA 0493 D M- 300 BLACKROCK Due to the fact that this was a one-off at the time, its inclusion on the ‘Jumping At The Go Go’ album came as a real surprise, perhaps even a shock, to many. In fact, as it had never been popularised, many deejays (Ginger was one) played it off the album at the time. No problems with O.V.O then… as many an Emidisc testified. K COLLINS AND TOP OF THE STAIRS A&M 2233 M- 150 COLLINS A wonderful Modern Soul dancer of course, and, to be honest one we find pretty infrequently…. In fact we haven’t had a copy for some time and always get loads of calls when we set sale it. So, being the democracy we are – here’s a chance for everyone. L THE GOSPEL MORE LOVE, THAT’S UK CHESS 8080 VG++ 150 CLASSICS WHAT WE NEED Long before folks started examining Gospel recordings looking for a soul rhythm this one was filling dancefloors in the immediate post – Wheel era and at the time was rather unique. Unlikely Guy Darrell and Damita Jo its stood the test of time too. M SAM MOORE GIVE YOU PLENTY LOVIN’ ATLANTIC 2762 M- 550 Together, with the Ad Libs ‘You’ll Always Be In Style’ Blue Cat promo, this record is the most jaw- dropping discovery of the current millennium. I personally have owned the promo for 40 years and never ever found an issue copy before now (the one with the above on it), then of course the disc came out on Expansion with us all thinking it was a previously unissued track. Ian Levine changed that 10 years ago when he found this. Still very rare, possibly one of only three known MINT copies. What a record it is. N HOUSTON OUTLAWS AIN’T NO TELLING WESTBOUND 179 M- 300 WD Our first copy in a long time of this superb modern/crossover item that Northern Soul dancefloors love too. Don’t know too much about the group apart from the fact that they had two other releases on the label…. And that Westbound releases can actually be very hard-to-find (as this one proves). O PAT & THE (ALL I NEED IS YOUR) FAST EDDIE 102 M- 300 BLENDERS GOOD GOOD LOVIN’ Listed this wonderful Philly side as it is the RARER flipside to ‘Just Because’ and a gem in its own right. To remind you how good they are we have ‘Soundbitten’ both sides. SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 JACKIE ROSS HONEY DEAR CHESS 13859 M- 10 The usual top class midtempo material from this great Chicago singer. 2 JIMMY ROBINS I CAN’T PLEASE YOU JERHART 207 M- 25 Last couple of copies, don’t miss out on the ultimate cheapie. 3 SYL JOHNSON FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN TMP-TING 6839 M- 10 Seriously good sixties double-sider from the mighty Syl. 4 BOBBY WOMACK I DON’T KNOW UNITED ARTISTS M- 10 561 Brilliant 70s dancer from the wonderous Mr Womack, actually got some Wigan Casino spins. 5 JOE SIMON DON’T LET ME LOSE SOUND STAGE M- 10 THE FEELING 2634 Another superb slice of Northern from this under-rated singer. 6 PAULINE & BOBBY NO MESSIN AROUND EXPO 102 M- 10 Excellent bongo-driven dancer out of Chicago has been woefully ignored. 7 JOHN EDWARDS VANISHING LOVE AWARE 045 WD M- 15 Non-album Southern groover from this great singer. 8 THE INTRUDERS (YOU’D BETTER) CHECK GAMBLE 204 M- 15 YOURSELF Storming Philadelphia soul from ’67. 9 THE C.O.D.’S I’M A GOOD GUY KELLMAC 1005 M- 15 Careering good time mover, simply murders ‘She’s Fire’ at 5 grand less. 10 LITTLE DOOLEY MEMORIES NORTH BAY 308 M- 15 Two tremendous early seventies dancer back-to-back.
