Simon Fraser University Library Simon Fraser University Burnaby, BC, Canada Last update: Spring 2010 Abstract This thesis explores the potential conflict between user-generated tags and traditional archiving practices in the broadcasting industry. Changing technological configurations in the field of television news often have unforeseen consequences. The installation of a digital video server at Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Vancouver Television in 2007 has the potential to shape the process of accessioning records used by the media librarians by creating new possibilities for the collection of tags throughout the production process. The current information architecture consists of a data structure and a set of practices that combines descriptive metadata constructed by media librarians with automatically generated metadata gathered from the production process. Allowing user-generated data in the form of descriptive tags attached to media assets to pass through to the information architecture has the capacity to destabilize the existing taxonomy of controlled terms used by the librarians. Any move towards allowing tags into the system should proceed with extreme caution. You stand your ground when teenagers challenge your authority. You discipline (and follow through) in a calm, consistent way. You're present during good and bad times, assur- ing teenagers that you love them even when they mess up. Finally, you model good behavior, showing how loving obedience yields rewards. Parenting expert Jim Burns says the goal of discipline is to teach kids responsibility, not to evoke obedience. "Our job is not to always prevent our children from making mistakes but rather to make certain they learn from their mistakes," he says. This needs to be done in a relaxed, respectful way, and it's the parent's job to establish this tone. "Shame-based parenting, when parents attempt to influence their kids' behavior through shaming, nagging, and negativity, simply doesn't work in the long run," Burns says. Music Reviews You Won't Get Anywhere Else – Concert reviews, album reviews, sometimes a book review and the occasional artist interview when the timing hits just right. Album Review: Switchfoot – Native Tongue. A year or so ago Switchfoot announced a planned break and went on hiatus. Naturally that meant hearing nothing until say at least 2020, right? After all, the band deserved some rest after every other year albums since 2009 and seemingly endless touring. It also raised concerns among the faithful that perhaps this was a slow burn to let fans know Switchfoot was over. Most bands don’t last 20 years. But in August, mere weeks (ok, maybe a month) after my request for an interview was denied (sad face) Switchfoot announced a new album. Not intentions to start a new album, mind you, it was clear the band had been at work (they spoon fed fans a taste of their new work in the ensuing months) which culminated in today’s release of their 11th studio album Native Tongue . Switchfoot Native Tongue Album Review. Native Tongue sometimes sounds raw, occasionally aggressive but mostly mixes a mellifluous dance inside a 14 song record. Track wise, Native Tongue is the band’s longest album and feels much longer than the 52 minute running time (not sure yet if that’s a good or bad thing). Felten∗ Center for Information Technology Policy Department of Computer Science Princeton University Extended Version – February 14, 2006† Abstract In the fall of 2005, problems discovered in two Sony-BMG compact disc copy protection systems, XCP and MediaMax, triggered a public uproar that ultimately led to class-action litigation and the recall of millions of discs. We present an in-depth analysis of these technologies, including their design, im- plementation, and deployment. The systems are surprisingly complex and suffer from a diverse array of flaws that weaken their content protection and expose users to serious security and privacy risks. Their complexity, and their failure, makes them an interesting case study of digital rights management that carries valuable lessons for content companies, DRM vendors, policymakers, end users, and the security community. 1 Introduction This paper is a case study of the design, implementation, and deployment of anti-copying technologies. We present a detailed technical analysis of the security and privacy implications of two systems, XCP and MediaMax, which were developed by separate companies (First4Internet and SunnComm, respectively) and shipped on millions of music compact discs by Sony-BMG, the world’s second largest record company. We consider the design choices the companies faced, examine the choices they made, and weigh the conse- quences of those choices. The lessons that emerge are valuable not only for compact disc copy protection, but for copy protection systems in general. Before describing the technology in detail, we will first recap the public events that brought the issue to prominence in the fall of 2005.
