Masterarbeit
MASTERARBEIT Titel der Masterarbeit „’I live to love my friends, live to love the soil, live for the people’: The (anti-)utopia of Kirino Natsuo’s Poritikon“ Verfasst von Adam Gregus, BA angestrebter akademischer Grad Master of Arts (MA) Wien, 2014 Studienkennzahl lt. Studienblatt: A 066 843 Studienrichtung lt. Studienblatt: Masterstudium Japanologie Betreuerin: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ina Hein, M.A. Acknowledgments First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Ina Hein, whose guidance has been invaluable for me throughout the writing of this thesis. It is also thanks to Prof. Hein that I discovered the work of Kirino Natsuo, so it is fair to say that her presence has been instrumental in the choice of my topic. I am also indebted to Prof. Hein for her generosity and the time she had spent on her correctures, remarks, as well as discussions about the thesis. I do not take any of this for granted, and I am convinced I could not have wished for a better supervisor. I am also most grateful to my parents, without whose support I would not have been able to concentrate on the thesis, as well as all of my studies as intensely as I could. Concerning the thesis, my thanks also go out to my friend Lucia, who has supplied me with sources for the thesis, not least the novel Poritikon itself, as well as other publications by Kirino Natsuo. Thanks to her, I have been able to get hold of these materials in an affordable and comfortable manner even outside of Japan. -

Mikio Naruse – O Nowoczesności I Kobietach
Krzysztof Loska Krzysztof Loska – dyrektor Instytutu Sztuk Film – media scena muzyczna Film STUDIA I ROZPRAWY Audiowizualnych w Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim, kierownik Katedry Teorii i Antropologii Filmu, zajmuje się filmem japońskim i kulturą współ- czesną, autor ponad stu publikacji naukowych, w tym jedenastu książek, m.in.: Dziedzictwo McLuhana. W filmach Naruse można dostrzec odzwierciedlenie zachodzących przemian oby- czajowych i gospodarczych, odbicie ówczesnych problemów życia codziennego, a przede wszystkim analizę ideologicznych uwarunkowań procesu modernizacji oraz miejsca ko- biety w nowoczesnym społeczeństwie. -

UKIGUMO (Mikio Naruse, 1955) Sometimes the Critic Is Faced with A
UKIGUMO (Mikio Naruse, 1955) Sometimes the critic is faced with a paradox. Certain film-makers are elevated, at one time or another, to the rank of major author. This has always been the case throughout the history of reflection on cinematographic art. But this accolade has not always been accompanied by the necessary arguments to justify such a status. I am referring, of course, to those types of critical study that attempt to guide the viewer along paths that offer an accessible approach to the works of the respective authors. I will therefore not concern myself with all the cinematographic writing that is based on a non-transferable personal taste and is entirely unhelpful to the viewer of the films, and that is most ardently protected by the more or less justified prestige of the fashionable critic of the day. But even if we concentrate on the criticism that claims to seek “to understand how we understand films” or, more simply put, to try to explain how the film-maker (I use the synecdoche despite the fact that in cinema the individual is always collective) is capable of facilitating our access to the possible world that is built before our eyes, the problem persists. Among other reasons, this is because not all film-makers are equally “detectable” when it comes to describing their personal maniera, as long as we aim to avoid empty words and commonplaces. To avoid beating about the bush and take the most immediate example, I would say that, as far as I am concerned, at least three directors have always given me trouble when I try to explain (to myself and to others) the reasons for the obvious fascination that I have for their films. -

Postwar era for Fumiko Hayashi That said, there are few novelists who have been subjected to as much criticism as Ms. Hayashi. From the beginning, she was the target of abuse. When she entered the world of literature, she was called“an amateur novelist whose poverty is her sales point.” Next, she was an“upstart novelist trying to peddle her half-year spent in Paris.” Then, from the Second Sino–Japanese War up through the War in the Pacific, she was a “novelist on government retainer, blowing pipes and beating drums enthusiastically for militarism,” etc.
