Malpaso Dance Company Is Filled with Information and Ideas That Support the Performance and the Study Unit You Will Create with Your Teaching Artist
The Joyce Dance Education Program Resource and Reference Guide Photo by Laura Diffenderfer The Joyce’s School & Family Programs are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council; and made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Special support has been provided by Con Edison, The Walt Disney Company, A.L. and Jennie L. Luria Foundation, and May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, Inc. December 10, 2018 Dear Teachers, The resource and reference material in this guide for Malpaso Dance Company is filled with information and ideas that support the performance and the study unit you will create with your teaching artist. For this performance, Malpaso will present Ohad Naharin’s Tabla Rasa in its entirety. Tabula Rasa made its world premiere on the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre on February 6, 1986. Thirty-two years after that first performance, on May 4, 2018, this seminal work premiered on Malpaso Dance Company in Cuba. Check out the link here for the mini-documentary on Ohad Naharin’s travels to Havana to work with Malpaso. This link can also be found in the Resources section of this study guide. A new work by company member Beatriz Garcia Diaz will also be on the program, set to music by the Italian composer Ezio Bosso. The title of this work is the Spanish word Ser, which translates to “being” in English. I love this quote by Kathleen Smith from NOW Magazine Toronto: "As the theatre begins to vibrate with accumulated energy, you get the feeling that they could dance just about any genre with jaw-dropping style. -

PSHE Mental Health KS4 Lesson 1 Resources
Key stage 4: Lesson 1 Resource 1: Transition Poem I don't know what I expected, But this wasn’t it at all. The girls just want to be skinny, The boys, to be fit and tall. We've only been gone for one summer, But just about everything’s changed; We’re all starting to look a bit different, And everyone’s acting so strange. Mark’s going out with Miranda, Annabel fancies my mate, Everything’s suddenly harder Than it was in Year 9 or Year 8. The teachers keep giving us homework, And wittering on about grades, My Mum and my Dad are no better, Summer memories rapidly fade. But there are some things I like a bit more now, We got to pick subjects to drop, I’m doing more maths (which I love) now, But art (which I hate) has now stopped. And I like that we get some more freedom, Time to learn in a way that we choose, But it’s all a great big shift from last term, And it’s making me slightly confused. © PSHE Association 2019 Key stage 4: Lesson 1 Resource 2: Challenges forum page Please help! I’ve just started my GCSE subjects and I’m getting really worried because I’m finding the subjects much harder than they were at key stage 3. I’m feeling lost in some lessons, and while everyone else seems to be getting it, most of what the teacher says is going right over my head. We’ve just tried our first practice assessments in Maths and History and I was disappointed with the grades I got. -

The Music Industry in the Social Networking Era
THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN THE SOCIAL NETWORKING ERA By Xi Yue A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Telecommunication, Information Studies and Media 2011 Abstract THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN THE SOCIAL NETWORKING ERA By Xi Yue Music has long been a pillar of profit in the entertainment industry, and an indispensable part in many people’s daily lives around the world. The emergence of digital music and Internet file sharing, spawned by rapid advancement in information and communication technologies (ICT), has had a huge impact on the industry. Music sales in the U.S., the largest national market in the world, were cut in half over the past decade. After a quick look back at the pre-digital music market, this thesis provides an overview of the music industry in the digital era. The thesis continues with an exploration of three motivating questions that look at social networking sites as a possible major outlet and platform for musical artists and labels. A case study of a new social networking music service is presented and, in conclusion, thoughts on a general strategy for the digital music industry are presented. The Music Industry and the Fleecing of Consumer Culture
The Music Industry: Demarcating Rhyme from Reason and the Fleecing of Consumer Culture I. Introduction The recording industry has a long history rooted deep in technological achievement and social undercurrents. In place to support such an infrastructure, is a lengthy list of technological advancements, political connections, lobbying efforts, marketing campaigns, and lawsuits. Ever since the early 20th century, record labels have embarked on a perpetual campaign to strengthen their control over recording artists and those technologies and distribution channels that fuel the success of such artists. As evident through the current draconian recording contracts currently foisted on artists, this campaign has often resulted in success. However, the rise of MTV, peer-to-peer file sharing networks, and even radio itself also proves that the labels have suffered numerous defeats. Unfortunately, most music listeners in the world have remained oblivious to the business practices employed by the recording industry. As long as the appearance of artistic freedom exists, as reinforced through the media, most consumers have typically been content to let sleeping dogs lie. Such a relaxed viewpoint, however, has resulted in numerous policies that have boosted industry profits at the expense of consumer dollars. Only when blatant coercion has occurred, as evidenced through the payola scandals of the 1950s, does the general public react in opposition to such practices. Ironically though, such outbursts of conscience have only served to drive payola practices further underground—hidden behind co-operative advertising agreements and outside promotion consultants. The advent of the Internet in the last decade, however, has thrown the dynamics of the recording industry into a state of disarray. -
“Amarillo by Morning” the Life and Songs of Terry Stafford 1
In the early months of 1964, on their inaugural tour of North America, the Beatles seemed to be everywhere: appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show, making the front cover of Newsweek, and playing for fanatical crowds at sold out concerts in Washington, D.C. and New York City. On Billboard magazine’s April 4, 1964, Hot 100 2 list, the “Fab Four” held the top five positions. 28 One notch down at Number 6 was “Suspicion,” 29 by a virtually unknown singer from Amarillo, Texas, named Terry Stafford. The following week “Suspicion” – a song that sounded suspiciously like Elvis Presley using an alias – moved up to Number 3, wedged in between the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout” and “She Loves You.”3 The saga of how a Texas boy met the British Invasion head-on, achieving almost overnight success and a Top-10 hit, is one of triumph and “Amarillo By Morning” disappointment, a reminder of the vagaries The Life and Songs of Terry Stafford 1 that are a fact of life when pursuing a career in Joe W. Specht music. It is also the story of Stafford’s continuing development as a gifted songwriter, a fact too often overlooked when assessing his career. Terry Stafford publicity photo circa 1964.
