Theme: Getting to Know Jesus Better SERIES: A Compassionate Friend SERMON: A Friend of the Sinful - Luke 7:36-50

A Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” But let me just add, “Jesus is a friend to the sinful.” 1. Today we’re going to take a look at Jesus befriending a sinful woman. And as we do so, I hope that God will speak to you. I hope that you’ll understand there is no sin so awful that it can’t be completely cleansed by the blood of Christ. So let’s take a look at the story together from Luke 7:36- 50, and as we go through we will draw some applications that will be helpful in understanding Jesus as, “A friend of the sinful.” B. There are four applications that I want you to see. 1. Jesus is a friend of sinners because he elicits or responds to positive guilt. A. Luke 7:36-38 B. Now there is a guilt that is positive. Jesus was a friend of sinners because he draws out this healthy guilt in us. Proverbs 27:6 says, “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.” It’s the enemy who says, “everything’s okay. Don’t feel guilty.” But a friend will sometimes confront you if there needs to be change. Jesus is that friend. 1. He convicts us through conscience A. Romans 2:15 2. He convicts us through scripture. A. 2 Kings 22:11-13 B. Romans 7:7 3. He convicts us just by his presence when we worship together. A. Matthew 18:20 B. Luke 5:8 4. Jesus convicts us through good people. A. When Nathan the prophet confronted King David about his adultery, the very first words out of David’s mouth were, “I have sinned against the Lord.” 2. Jesus is a friend of sinners because he encourages genuine repentance. A. The reaction to the sinful woman. - Luke 7:39 B. Jesus’ reaction to the sinful woman - Luke 7:46-47 C. 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 D. Luke 13:3 E. Mark 9:43 3. Jesus is a friend because he offers total forgiveness. A. Luke 7:48 B. Romans 4:7 C. Jeremiah 31:34 4. Jesus is a friend of sinners because he promises inner peace. A. Luke 7:50 B. Two reasons this woman could go in peace 1. She knew that her sins were forgiven. A. Acts 2:38-39 B. 1 :8-9 2. Her life was going to be different. A. Psalm 32:3-5 B. 1 Timothy 1:15 C. Acts 22:16

CONCLUSION: Because Jesus is a friend of sinners, he takes the worst of us and makes the best of us because of who he is. Romans 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” If you come to Christ today, your friend Jesus will wrap his arms around you, and cleanse you of sin, and bring you to himself.
