The Brampton men’s horseshoe club will be hosting a sanctioned tournament on June 2 with a start time of 9:00 AM. This coming season is our 30th Anniversary, we are inviting all Past Presidents and have asked the Mayor to open the season. We finally got the permit to build two 10’ x 16’ picnic type shelters. It has taken us 3 years to go through all the red tape. The city is helping, they will pay for the electrical work and the concrete pads, our members will pay for and construct the shelters. Hopefully they will be ready to start our season on May 1st.

The East Elgin Community Complex Horseshoe Club (EECC) of Aylmer has a very successful year in 2006. We had a total of 25 Junior players show up to play, most of them beginners. Some of our Junior players took part in the Ontario Doubles with a 1st in “A” Division and 1st in “B” Division. Our younger players also took 1st in the 9 and under class. In the Ontario Singles our 9 and under players took 1st place with 26.5% average and in the Junior “B” Division our players placed 1st and 2nd. We are very proud of these young players and expect more young players to take part in the Ontario Singles and Doubles this year as well as the Canadian Championships in Woodstock. We are also starting to prepare for the 2009 Canadian Championships being held in Aylmer!! This year we are holding four sanctioned tournament days, May 12 June 2, July 7 and August 11. All of these days will be Singles at 9:30 AM and Doubles at 1 PM, with Lunch and Refreshments available. All dates will feature a Junior class as well. The entry fee for all tournaments is $10.00. For more information you can contact Keith Lindsay (519)773- 3355.

Hamilton Indoor Horseshoe Pitching Club invites you to come and help us start our 2007 Indoor season with one of our “pitching Legends” at the Larry Markle Open on Saturday October 13. Our club has in addition to 6 indoor clay courts, other activities such as darts, pool tournaments, dances, turkey rolls, lobster night, cribbage, games day and more. We are located at 170 Brockley Drive, Hamilton. From the intersection of Hwy #20 (Centennial Parkway) and Barton St., go east on Barton to the 2nd stoplight (Brockley) and go left to #170 (on right side). We offer singles, doubles and league nights for horseshoes. Call our club at 905-561-4344 for a copy of our events schedule. To register for sanctioned tournaments, you must call in your entry by 8:00 pm Thursday for that weekend's tournament. Classes and times will be set Thursday night and late entries will only be accepted if a spot is available in the proper class AND at the discretion of the tournament committee. The Hamilton Horseshoe Pitching Club now has a website. You can find all tournaments and social events listed on the calendar. www.hhpc.bravehost.com

Kitchener Moose Lodge will be hosting two sanctioned tournaments this summer. The dates are June 9th. and Aug. 11th. All tournaments have Singles at 9:00 a.m. and Doubles at 1:00 p.m., sign-up times for the singles 8:30 AM., and Doubles are 12:30 PM. For more information contact Roy Hartman.

London Horseshoe Club will be hosting two sanctioned tournaments this summer. The 4th Annual Singles tournament will feature 3 Classes: “A” Division, 40% and over; “B” Division 20 – 39.99%; and “C” Division 19.99% and under. The entry fee is $15.00 and there is room for 32 players. The 4th Annual Doubles Tournament will be a High/Low Draw Doubles Tournament. The entry fee is $15.00 per person with room for 64 players. For both tournaments the courts will open at 11 am with play starting at 12 Noon. Peterborough Horseshoe Club has five different leagues throwing shoes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, all starting at 7:00 PM beginning the 1st week in May and going through to September. The Retiree’s league plays each Wednesday, starting at 1:00 PM. Retirees is a “Show up and Play” league and any retired person is welcome to join in. The PHC pits (14) are located at the Peterborough Naval Association, 24 Whitlaw St., Peterborough and are full illuminated for evening play. (705) 743-6115. The five leagues and approximate number of teams in each are: Monday “Mixed”, 36 teams; Tuesday “Men’s”, 42- 48 teams; Wednesday, “Montreal House and Peterborough Armories”, 24 teams; Thursday, “Ladies”, 30 – 36 teams. In addition to regular league play the club will host two sanctioned tournaments, May 5 and May 19, 2007. Both tournaments are singles play with registration at 9:30 AM and a start time of 10:00 AM. The entry fee for both dates is $5.00. Players should register by Wednesday prior to the tournament and your 2007 Horseshoe Ontario membership is required. On June 9 a special tournament will be held in honour of Al Niskanens 80th. Al (affectionately known as “Big Al from Chicago”) is spearheading this and advises it will be a charitable event with proceeds going to the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. Al has been relentless in his pursuit of prizes and cash donations for this tournament and has amassed great numbers of both. There will be prizes for participants and in all probability, several hundred dollars of prize money. Tickets are $20.00 each with sales restricted to 64 players. Pre-registration is required by June 2. The tournament will be a version of draw for partners, whereby the organizers will draw the partners and prepare the teams prior to the

Page 4 Spring 2007

Club Chatter continued event. This is to expedite start-up time (10 AM) and minimize confusion. There will be no attempt made to classify players and there will be four groups of eight teams each playing a round robin on 3 pits. Big Al, with the wisdom amassed throughout his 80 years, has come up with a “special” group of players whom he has dubbed “VP players” (in his own words, Very Poor). This will be a fun group separate from the main four and playing on their own pit. Another annual tournament is the “Bruce Harris Memorial” on July 21. This tournament is held at the Apsley Legion, Apsley ON approximately 60 km north of Peterborough. This is a draw for partners’ tournament and restricted to 64 players with a requirement of pre-registration. This event is several years old now and a well organized, fun filled event with prizes and cash. Talk to anyone who has played this tournament. Several other popular local tournaments are hosted by John and Carole Fair. At least one of these will be a charity tournament. “Stompers Pits” are located at 780 Cottingham Rd., west off Highway #7 just south of Fowlers Corners. John and Carole host fun tournaments and can be reached at (705) 799-7734 for further information. Information on the various events and leagues in this article can be obtained by contacting Bob Heron, Ray Roseboom or Bob Lumbard. For phone numbers see Tournament Trail Contacts on page 3.

The Pitchers of Pebbly became a Sanctioned League in 2002, in affiliation with Horseshoe Ontario/Canada. All league and tournaments are held at Pebbly Beach, in MacGregor Township, 15 minutes East from the City of Thunder Bay. Koivisto’s Kourts are nestled along the shoreline of Lake Superior in a very unique setting, featuring 2 clay courts, one with Minnesota Blue clay, and one with Wisconsin Grey clay. The courts are lighted for night pitching with 2 light standards. League play is on Thursday nights starting at 6:30 pm, along with Tournaments sanctioned by Horseshoe Ontario. Any carded Ontario/Canada pitcher in good standing, is welcome to pitch in Pitchers of Pebbly Tournaments. For more information contact Terry Koivisto at (807)683-8525 or by email [email protected]

Moose Family Center 1141 Woodstock will be having league pitching every Monday night, for more information contact Al Mackay. All sanctioned tournaments will be Mixed Doubles with pitching starting at 12:45 pm.

Congratulations to Lindsay on your 2 great Provincial Tournaments in 2006 Way to go Joanna on winning another Provincial Singles Title. Several Juniors have moved to the Adult Division again this year. Congratulations to Drew for all your achievements as a Junior at the Worlds, Canadians and Provincial Championships. Not all but most of the other juniors are sorry to see you go and the men are looking forward to playing with you. We wish you continued success this year as an adult.

Remember, the Canadian Championships are in Woodstock this year and you need 3 sanctioned tournaments.

Note: A $10.00 deposit is required for Ontario Singles and Doubles this year because too many Juniors were signing up but not showing up for the tournaments. When you show up at the tournament you will get your $10.00 deposit back. See you on the courts and let’s make 2007 the best year ever.
