Annual Memorial Service for the Owmby Group and Springline Parishes This year the annual service at which we remember and pray for all those we love and miss will be held at St Luke's, North Carlton at 7pm on Monday 2nd November. Please note the change of venue from that previously given. November 2nd is All Souls' Day, when we remember with thanksgiving before God those whom we have know personally who have died - our families and friends, those who have nurtured us in life and in faith. Everyone is welcome at this service. FROM A CHURCHWARDEN As we approach November 11th, I am reminded not only of Remembrance Day, but am also reminded of the gift of forgiveness and friendship. This was brought home to me very recently on a trip to Orkney and in particular to the little island of Lambholm. There, we visited an Italian Chapel known as The Miracle of Camp 60. Lambholm housed, in the later years of the Second World War, several hundred Italian prisoners captured during the North African campaign. They were sent to Orkney to work on the Churchill Barriers, built to protect the British fleet in Scapa Flow. The Italian prisoners wanted to build a church where they could worship their God. Permission was eventually granted provided work on the Churchill Barriers was not impeded. Two empty Nissen huts were given to them and these were placed end to end and joined together. A talented artist, Domenico Chiocchetti, set to work and whilst he worked his imagination caught fire and ideas flooded his mind. His work is truly magnificent, particularly the altar piece, which is a representation of Madonna and Child. This masterpiece is based on a Holy picture by Nicolo Barabino (1832-1891) which Chiocchetti had carried with him throughout the war. However, owing to the fortunes of war, the chapel was in use for a very short time. When it was practically finished, a special service was held incorporating (with gramophone records in the vestry), the bells and choir of St. Peter's Rome. The Chapel is an amazing place; the walls look as though they are covered in bricks with a concrete dado below with intricate carvings. All of the bricks and the dado are, in fact, painted freehand by Signor Chiocchetti, The Chapel embraces you as you enter you can feel the loving care taken to produce it. Signor Chiocchetti returned to Orkney in March 1960 to restore the Chapel to its former glory. Before he left to return home to Moena, Italy, Signor Chiocchetti wrote a letter to the people of the Orkneys. I reproduce two paragraphs from this:- Dear Orcadians, The chapel is yours, for you to love and preserve. I take with me to Italy, the remembrance of your kindness and wonderful hospitality. I shall remember always, and my children shall learn from me to love you. I thank the authorities of Kirkwall and all those who have directly or indirectly collaborated for the success of this work and for having the joy of seeing again the little chapel of Lambholm where I, in leaving, leave a part of my heart. Signed Domenico Chiocchetti. These words are the real Miracle of Camp 60!

PRAYER FOCUS FOR NOVEMBER This month we pray especially for Christians who are persecuted for their faith throughout the world. We thank God for their perseverance and faithfulness and pray that God will give them courage in their suffering.

OF E. PRIMARY SCHOOL Education never stands still and this year in particular is no exception with the introduction of multiplying and dividing fractions to exercise the minds of our Key Stage 2 children as part of our government's never ending quest to raise the standard throughout our schools. Fortunately our pupils seem to be enjoying the challenge. Some of the more inventive and creative introductions, such as the Sergeant 7 tables song have helped to make the new medicine taste a little sweeter! Key Stage 2 have been focusing on the topic of 'Beautiful world? Wonderful God?' this term. They have been reflecting on what is beautiful to them, whether it be the dog, family or life in general. Perhaps a favourite teddy or Grandad's watch? This theme was continued on the 'Welly walk' , which is now a firmly established Hackthorn tradition which remains, happily, free from the creative input of Westminster, giving the children the opportunity to appreciate, and reflect on seasonal changes, reminding them of our important historical links with agriculture. Key Stage 1 had a very healthy time making fresh fruit salad, learning about the benefits of all different kinds of fruit, while Key Stage 2 did some scientific taste testing by creating some very imaginative soups. Once again, we had the great pleasure of welcoming the Young Shakespeare company who, this year, gave us Romeo and Juliet. The children were truly engaged and captivated by the whole event, and the actors were suitably astounded by some of the very astute questions that their young audience posed afterwards. Buoyed by the success of last year's cake extravaganza, we opened our doors again for another Macmillan coffee morning. Once again, the response was tremendous, and we raised over £250 in an hour! Many thanks to everyone who came, baked, or just ate and drank. Contact the school on 01673 860295 to arrange a visit, request a School Brochure or enquire about vacancies. Italian Evening

WELTON FAMILY HEALTH CENTRE NEWS INFLUENZA VACCINATIONS Hopefully by the time you read this we will be well on our way with vaccinating those "at risk" patients. For those that have not be able to attend the Saturday drop in clinics we will now start to offer selected appointment slots where possible. PLEASE NOTE - we will not routinely write to patients to remind them as we have done in the past. If you would like a vaccine and think you are eligible please contact the surgery as soon as possible to book in for this. DNA's (Did Not Attends) In September, there were a total of 108 appointments that patients did not attend for. This was made up of 45 doctors' appointments and 63 nurses' appointments totalling 18 hours of clinical time. We appreciate that at times patients may forget an appointment or have an emergency that prevents them from attending however; we would appreciate it if you could let us know if you are unable to attend so that someone else can make use of the appointment. DISPENSARY A reminder that it is possible to order repeat prescriptions online, 24 hours a day. If you do not currently take advantage of this service please see Reception for more details on how to sign up. As stated in last months' newsletter, the Dispensary hatch will now close between 1pm and 2pm but the usual opening / closing times will remain the same. MENINGOCOCCAL B VACCINATION From 1st September 2015 the Meningitis B vaccination has been added to the Childhood Immunisation Programme in England. The programme is for all infants born ON or AFTER 1st May 2015 and consists of three doses at 2, 4 and 12-13 months. If your child fits these criteria, please contact Reception to book an appointment with one of our nurses. GP REGISTARS We are pleased to say that we currently have two GP Registrars with us in the Practice, Dr Cheryl Mensah and Dr Maryam Tukur. Appointments will be available with both of these Doctors for the duration of their placements with us - we would appreciate any feedback you are able to give which also supports their future development. STAFF TRAINING In order to ensure our staff and doctors remain up to date; we will be closed for Training from 1pm on Tuesday 17th November 2015. Emergency cover is provided during this time by calling the usual surgery number (01673 862232 and selecting Option 1).
